Bernards Inn Ratings and Reviews
My only issue was that the bussing of the tables was too swift and plates were taken before both parties were done eating
We were dining and therefore didn't want to feel rushed which we were made to feel
Other than that the food was delicious
The dessert presentation left a lot to be desired. My husband and I shared the carrot cake which came out on a dinner size stark white plate and was placed at the upper of 1/3 of the plate leaving only empty white space on the other 2/3
The food and service were absolutely great!! Not sure how they choose who sits where but I had made reservations many days in advance and on the way to the the table they passed empty tables of two and stuck us next to a extremely busy servers station. A lot of traffic back and forth and was very distracting. Learned that I should of requested a table in a lesser traffic area.
As a second visit to Berards Inn, I was as impressed as I should have been for upscale dining. Meals were okay, but not inspiring for the cost or presentation to the diner. My wife and I were at first escorted to an isolated area of the dining area and then requested to seat in the main area as it was not crowed at all at 6PM on a Sunday.
Our waiter was a little odd with his questions and a bit over the top for us as he seemed to want to run up the bill more than accommodate our needs. I will not return as there are much better choices for us elsewhere.
The Bernard's Inn as excellent food and service. The staff is very customer oriented w/o being obtrusive. My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary with dinner at the Inn this week and everything was great. Also, when we arrived for dinner, the hostess asked if we were there for a special occasion. My wife mentioned it was our anniversary and after dinner the waiter brought over some very nice chocolate candy, on the house. We have eaten here previously and have always had the same experience. One other thing, 18 months ago, prior to my daughter's wedding, my new in-laws held the rehearsal dinner in the downstairs room. The food and service on that occasion was also excellent.
My friend and I opted for the Ala carte instead of the 6 course dinner. My friend & I had gotten the lobster bisque soup- the most delicious soup I've ever tasted. Creamy but just enough consistency with 1 big crouton in the middle and lobster meat. Then I had the suckling pig with the crispy skin on top and a tender meat it was garnished with red cabbage, potato and a little bit of sauce -uhmm!! My friend had a duck with just enough crisp to the skin and a tender meat done to perfection - it tasted like an upscale chicken that just melted in your mouth. It was succulently delicious!!! Indeed my compliments to the chef as well. It was a pleasure dining at Bernard's inn.
I finally got a date with my wife while kids were at the Y so we decided to go to BI. We only had an hour cause of the Patriots Day showing next door. The service and server were second to none and the ambiance like no other. The food was amazing and the sight of the bar was entertaining. It was our first time at BI and not our last. Will stay longer next time knowing there's live music. Great experience.
We made reservation in the Library area. Another nice dining experience, while listening to Bobby Egan on the piano. A very pleasent evening. The Bernards Inn is consistently good.
One comment I would make, never had processo decanted before. We expected the second pour coming from a chilled bottle, not served from a carafe (like wine), left on table to warm & loose bubbles.
The overall experience was nice, and our waiter pleasent, though we told him about the bobblies.
Very atypical of the Bernard's Inn. Went for lunch on New Years Day, expecting something a bit special. Alas, it was a disappointment. The food was OK, though selection was limited. However, the service was way below par. The person serving wasn't just missing a few refinements, they needed basic wait-skill training. Also, I thought it presumptious for them to automatically add a 20% gratuity to a bill for two people...that's something that is usually done for groups of six or more. It was especially irritating, given the poor service. Based on this one experience I would not return or recommend the Bernard's Inn to anyone else. However, I've been going there a long time and know this to be out of the norm. So, I will return, but I'll be on the lookout for signs that this experience may represent some new norm.
My wife and I went for the 3-course New Year's Eve dinner as we have for many years. As always the food was excellent, our waiter attentive and Terry very personable. My only complaint would be the timing of the service was rushed. We arrived early and were seated; there was no doubt we'd finish before the table was needed for the next seating. Usually there's time between courses to talk and relax but this time the food came out almost as soon as the table was cleared from the previous course. We'd have liked to draw out the dining experience longer
since there was plenty of time for us to do that.
Waiter was Unprofessional telling us the countdown till he's off of work dry humor we just didn't think was funny at all.. Never came back for our drink and tried to seem as if he was an upscale waiter by giving he look to the other waiters when trying to place the food down at the same time. (He needed to work on that). The price was steep $800 for four but it was NEw years eve. Nothing special for the money although the food is usually alway good there.
We were there on Friday to celebrate our Anniversary. We were escorted to a very nice table. The Hostess and the Waiter were very attentive and the waiter described the Menu and Specials to our satisfaction. We split a tasty appetizer and had two delicious entrees. I commented several times on the excellent presentation of the dishes. We chose a nice bottle of wine, not too expensive, but absolutely perfect for us. We then finished with tasty desserts and an international coffee. While somewhat expensive, I found the Dinner with wine to be an excellent value, made even better by the quality of the service.
Went during the Holiday season for lunch with friends. The Inn & restaurant were beautifully decorated. Loved the fireplace as we walked into the Inn . Parking lot made it simple. The service from beginning to the end was wonderful . The food was 5 star NYC quality. I'm a foodie and I eat in fine restaurants all over the world. The chef knows what he is doing. We started the sweetbreads the presentation was beautiful & the taste was equal. The soup, burger, salad & liver were equally delicious. We were to full for desert. I'm making this my new go to place.
The Bernards Inn is always the complete package....great food, wonderful service, romantic, piano music on the weekends...and the inimitable Terry Baldwin who adds the special something in her recommendation of great value wines.
We've stayed at the Inn twice but this lunch was the first time we'd dined there. The food was just sorta OK. The elegance of the dining and bar area as well as the amenities raises your expectations so you hope to be impressed. Not the case with our food. Shrimp dish was overcooked and under-salted. The lamb sandwich might have been beef, or pork, or any other form of meat with a heavy sauce. I didn't have salad, but I was told it was good. The squash soup was at least as good as I make at home. So overall not sorry we went, but underwhelmed.
I have not been there for a little over a decade for whatever reason, life sometimes has a way of getting in way of things.
It was refreshing and great to see that the place was still the way I remembered it if not better!
Everything was at 10 from the time we walked in until the time we left the service the quality of the food the attentiveness of the waiters and waitresses phenomenal job happy holidays to you guys.

Fantastic vibrant bar. I think more people dining there than in the dining roomd. Piano was a soothing great after long week at work. Seasonal favorites as well. Service was exceptional from the moment we walked in. Our table was ready early and since the bar was full we decided to have cocktails at the table. We actually had two and never felt rushed. In fact, we sat at 715 and left at 1130! Bread, to appetizers to entrees to dessert were served to each diner by a individual server so that all meals were place at the same exact time. Very classy. Food was priced right and tasteful. I would say the the wine list is way overpriced. Other than that, can't wait to go back and try the bar seats. Thank you for a great evening.
One of my all time favorites! Old world charm and glamour with delicious gourmet prepared foods. Service and ambiance are CONSISTENTLY as stellar as the food! I'm a good cook, so when I go out, I want the restaurant to step it up a notch and The Bernard's in does not disappoint. The gem of Somerset County gets my 5 star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️review.
