Bernards Inn Ratings and Reviews
Consistently good. Love the ambiance and the wine list while not extensive but has some great choices. Food is solid (4 out of 5) but not the draw (at least for us). Generally a high quality piano player providing an interesting sound track for your dining experience. I noted the bar scene...for an older crowd. The Bernards Inn is solidly in our rotation.
This a special place for a special occasion. The food was excellent. My scallops were perfectly seared and my wife, who only has salmon rare, was not disappointed. Service was outstanding and the wine list extraordinary. It was a great way to celebrate our anniversary.
Last two visits to Bernards Inn have been disappointing for food and service . Service in this case applies to wait staff not the sommelier. Wait staff is slow and seems bothered or overwhelmed - in both visits. For the food, I had the tuna appetizer which was fresh, but otherwise no flavor -sauce or additional texture and the filet mignon which was cooked as requested (I asked for modification), but the overall dish had little flavor with the single potato slice and minimal dry vegetables. The Bernards Inn was always a "count on" place for special occasions or a "splurge". The value is not there at the moment. Hopefully this will change!
Went to the Bernards Inn to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The bar area is lively with a piano player and we enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail that was expertly prepared. The dining room was well appointed and very comfortable. The service was extremely attentive and professional. We found the sommelier to be both knowledgeable and approachable. The food was excellent in both quality and presentation. We will certainly be returning.
We had a wonderful evening celebrating our 47th wedding anniversary at Bernards Inn. The food was wonderful....I highly recommend the grilled watermelon with burrata, which was fabulous. Also the scallops served on a bed of lemon risotto with asparagus. To die for! Our desserts were great and had happy anniversary written on the plates. The entire staff was professional and friendly and they all wished us happy anniversary and gave us a card signed by all as well as a box of chocolates as we left. We had a great celebratory dinner!
My husband and I were married at the Bernard's Inn last year, so we came back on our anniversary to dine at the restaurant. Frankly, the service was awful. Our server was impersonal and abrupt, and he barely came to check on us. We opted for the tasting menu and when the cheese course came out, we asked the server to tell us about the cheese. He literally said "the menu has the names of the cheese (but never got us a menu to reference), and said "this is like a blue cheese, this one has the consistency of a provolone, and this one has the consistency of a brie". We asked to speak to the sommelier when we sat down at 7:15 and by 8:00, after being served two of the tasting menu courses, she STILL had not come. We finally ordered a bottle of wine we had before (though we really wanted to celebrate with a new bottle we had not tried before). Service was really awful and we were really upset by this. We thought that we would go back to the Bernard's Inn each year to celebrate our anniversary but are certain that we will never be back given how awful we were treated on our anniversary dinner.
The food is excellent. We had a 5 course dinner and it was fantastic. I would say the individual meals were just a little too big . the appetizers had the right size, but course 3 and 4 was too much. So a little bit smaller portions would be great. I know it is pricy and maybe people expect bigger portions but personally i prefer smaller ones.
As always, a lovely meal here. 'Ambiance' is a challenge to review as we took advantage of the lovely weather and sat outside...having sat inside plenty of times, I can say that the atmosphere is lovely...except in the room with the tile floor, as it is quite loud. But the library/bar area is nice (more contemporary) and th formal dining room is fantastic (traditional fine dining style and quieter). The menu is always interesting, the quality of the ingredients is without parallel and if you even like soup a little, this guy is a true genius with soups (best lobster bisque on the planet). Some dishes may seem a little 'weird'/CIA, but trust him...they flat out WORK. Highlights include butter poached lobster (lobster foam was exquisite!), grilled watermelon (just try it) and, believe it or not, amazing fish n chips (light batter, halibut, amazing!).
lovely historic building, very enjoyable ambiance and well prepared entrée dishes. The salmon was prepared as requested and it was exquisite. The pork porterhouse was also very tasty and prepared perfectly! The key lime dessert left something to be desired as the dessert chef would not leave off the berry topping.
We did not appreciate that we were put in the back dark room with only two other sets of diners
My husband and I ate outdoors on the patio. Despite being right off the road, the patio is charming. Since we were not too hungry, we chose items from the bar menu. It is really nice to have this option. I started with an interesting craft cocktail. I then had their signature farm to table salad and it could not have been fresher nor more attractively presented. I followed the salad with the crab cake which was excellent! Very moist and delicious. Over the years, dining at The Bernard's Inn has always been a wonderful experience. The food is always fresh and never overlooked. The artisanal breads are delicious. Our server was a very polite and attentive ( not overbearing) young man.
The Bernard's Inn is a flashback to old world charm and service. From your very arrival, you are treated like a gentleman (or lady) of yester-year. We were met in front by their valets who held umbrellas for the ladies and assisted them up the stairs. After being received by the concierge, we proceeded to the Library Bar where cocktails are not only unique, but expertly crafted. Once we were ready for dinner, a waitress carried our cocktails to our table. Each course is served in coordination (if you have a party of 6, 6 waiters / waitresses will place each plate down at the same time), a throwback to old world service. The menu is very seasonal and unique with wild game options. Each meal is meant to be eaten as a totality (each ingredient on your fork for each bite). Complimentary soup shooters and cookies were provided by the chef. Everything from their bread to their desserts are made in house and are always consistent and delicious. Spend a romantic evening at the Bernard's Inn and you wont be let down.
Quite disappointing. Maybe the issue was a Sunday night-dining room closed. Had to ask for a seating change away from server's area. Crab appetizer uneventful/overpriced. Garden salad appeared not to have any dressing. Had to ask for our wine several times. Entrees were good-but not overwhelming for the price. Nice job recognizing daughter's birthday.
It's always a treat to go to the Bernardsville Inn. It's an elegant place without pretension. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, efficient and seem to enjoy their work. The food and wine list is really wonderful. We had our wedding at the Inn and they handled all the details. We asked for a specific cake we liked from another bakery. They asked us to bring in a piece of the cake, and they made it for us. The bar scene is always lively and sometimes there is a piano player. Today we sat near to a mother with her 2 young girls and their grandmother. It's a nice atmosphere for young and old.
We went to the Bernards Inn for the first time in many years for our 45th wedding anniversary. We were the first to be seated in the dining room, so it was very (almost awkwardly) quiet. As other guests were seated, they smelled of old money. Our waiter was excellent -- very much on top of things, but not hurried. The sommelier was around, but didn't offer help with the wine selection. The wine list was extensive and expensive; our David Bruce Pinot Noir was very good. The salads we chose were good, though I could have done with fewer beets. The entrees haddock and lamb were both excellent, but I could have done without the kale. The s'mores dessert we chose was great and the anniversary inscription and the extra candies were a nice touch.
