Since 1992, Bernard'O Restaurant has offered award winning California French cuisine in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. Your hosts, Bernard and Diana Mougel, along with executive chef Vincent Viale invite you to join them in their quarters in Rancho Bernardo.
The restaurant has been awarded the "Award of Excellence" by the Wine Spectator from 2001-2010as well as "Best Gourmet Cuisine" and "Favorite Restaurant" from 2001-2010 by Rancho Magazine's Dining Survey.

The best restaurant for so many years! thank you Bernardos for many years of great memories. You can never be replaced but I do hope that the new owner and new menu offers a place to go for some great food, in a nice atmosphere which can remain a cut above the fast food casual places which surround the area. You will be missed but I look forward to remembering you as we eat at the new place. May it have as many good years as you have had!! Bravo!!

Bernardo'o is tired inside and looks like it needs to be renovated. Bathrooms are 80's vintage and dining room is dark and dingy. Outside area is not kept up, plants are either dead or dying and outdoor furniture is used up. On the bright side, the food was good but totally over priced. Hope the new owners can bring this excellent location back to life.
Arrived about 15 minutes before our reservation time and even though there were several open tables we were told to wait at the bar since "we have other reservations coming in" - whatever that means. As soon as we sit at the bar and order a drink amazingly enough we're ready to be seated. Took forever for the wait staff to even bring us a menu then waited another lengthy time to place drink order. The food was not very good - the lobster bisque was awful, the rib was decent but not great. The lobster ravioli was not bad but nothing to get excited about. Overall just not a great experience and with so many other choices I don't see this one getting a return visit.
Met a friend for lunch at Bernardo's. I have tried it several times and almost always, I am disappointed. I have heard from several friends how good it is. Maybe I just missed the good. Had salmon cakes, the special, over greens. Two tiny cakes & very small amount of salad, $14! I now know that this place is closing. Hoping we will get a decent new restaurant in its spot.
This is my second visit and I was again impressed with every aspect of my dining experience. All courses and elements of each dish were wonderfully prepared. My order consiated of escargot and filet mignon. Service and ambiance were also exceptional and highly complimentary.
Situated in a strip mall does not engender positive thoughts but Bernard O Restaurant is a real gem. The new chef, whom our waiter, Bill, raved about, had some delectable dishes to sample. The carrot ginger soup was out of this world and the scallops in truffle sauce, cooked in the shell were delicious. I used my bread to sop up whatever remained. My partner had the barzini fish that was perfectly cooked. I recommend it highly! Kudos to Bill the waiter, who did a great job!
We ordered seared scallops, braised short rib, lamb rack, and beef fettuccine. First of all, I would give 8 of 10 for the plating of all dishes. All food was cooked perfectly, except the braised short rib, which was too dry and salty. The sauce sitting at the bottom of the beef fettuccine was also too salty. In fact, I think the beef in this dish and the short rib used the same heavy sauce. There's some green puree type of stuff in our lamb dish, which tasted bitter, so we avoided it all together. With that said, the food ingredients themselves (scallops and lamb) were cooked perfectly, super tender and juicy. Another complaint I have about the restaurant was the tightness in spacing between tables. We were seated in a booth but the table was too small to fit all their big plates. The tables around us were all every crowded. I would recommend group of only 2-3 people.
Every time we visit our son in San Diego, we plan to eat at Bernardo's. On our first visit, we were startled by its location, in a strip mall, but once inside, we were delighted -- by the terrific menu, the wonderful preparations and the attentive, knowledgeable service. We've enjoyed the Coq au Vin, the Bouillabaisse, the steaks and different pork specials, all of which have been excellent. I can't speak to its value as a brunch or lunch destination, having only been there for dinner, nor have I noticed anything about its 'bar scene,' but if you're looking for a terrific dinner, based on our experiences there, I highly recommend Bernardo's.
the escargot was awesome! my husband enjoyed the french onion soup and scallop entree. I wasn't a big fan of the scallops, but the short ribs was excellent! dessert - we got the hazelnut bar/chocolate cake (forgot what it was called)/sorbet dessert - amazingly good. I thought I wouldn't like it because it looked very chocolatey, but it was not too sweet - just right. creme brulee was also good. would go again for the food, and even bring our young son, but the tables were quite close together. (we did go on feb 13th though).
This is consistently a very good French continental cuisine restaurant. The French onion soup one of my favorites here for years. Always done very well, multiple types of onions, a nice slice of crusty baguette, and guyre cheese melted on top. The rack of lamb done to med. rare perfection with a wonderfully seasoned crust. The filet I had was also perfect and the béarnaise spot on. We split a crème brulee and all in all a great meal and a wonderful evening. TY B'O!
We visit Rancho Bernardo regularly as we have family there. Whenever we are there, we make every attempt to dine at BernardO. It is very consistent with regard to both the quality of the food and the service. It was so good that we went back again the next night as well. Highly recommended.
My wife have dined at Bernard'o several times including once in their private room and each time has ben outstanding and wanting us to return. We would consider this to be one of our best kept secretes and our top three restaurants in all of San Diego.

Have eaten here a few times over the many years Bernard has had it. The central room is smlal with table service and two raised half-moon booths that are a little more private (we seem to always get those). Menu varies, wine choices are wide. This time, Micky was our server. Cauliflower / olive oil soup was excellent. We had scallops and also the beef bourguignon. Both were very good, sauce was tasty but not overwhelming on the scallops (mushrooms and winter squash below). Service is always good, but I do think that plates were taken too quickly--by best standards, both of us should have been finished eating before either plate was taken. The host had his finger up his nose when we walked in, too. I'm not a germaphobe, but really. However, I still like the place enough and think I'll go in the summer next time to sit outside.
With restaurant week January 2016 I had the opportunity to ample this gem. Each menu option was enticing. Of my selections, mushroom ravioli, Scottish salmom, and dark chocolate mousse; all three were simply excellent in presentation, flavor, and portion. Tied together with a cocktail, french mule, my meal was uncompromisingly enjoyable.
We ordered from the Restaurant Week menu and were not disappointed. Every course was carefully plated and delicious. The flavors combined very well and the meats were cooked to perfection. The scallops were the best we have ever had and we will be sure to return soon.
The service may have left a little to be desired but again it was Restaurant Week.
My boyfriend and I went in for restaurant week only to find out that the menu they had online was from last year. Bummer. The food was well presented but taste was just ok; nothing to brag about. Then there's the service...slow. Would we go back? Umm, probably not.
I would say the food was really good... although a little strong on the pepper. I would recommend the food, the service was great for some and for others it was as if the wait staff was looking down on you. My friend and I were both dressed appropriately and were polite and ordered drinks, not just the pre-fix restaurant week menu. Being a small restaurant you can see all around and therefore it was obvious some people were treated far different and not even necessarily with a different waiter. Even our water glasses at two tables were different than the rest of the restaurant. I would recommend the food although preface that the vegetable come with a lot of pepper and that service may be great or not depending on if your table is considered acceptable. We still tipped the 20% but I really hope this was an exception and not the rule. I've never heard anyone else having this experience but if I was at one of the tables with good service...I admit I might not have even noticed.
Restaurant week brought us there, but the food quality and service will bring us back. Having just moved to the area it was great to see a SDRW offer with many choices and very few price add ons...Their wine list is great and reasonably priced(a half bottle of Rhone for $18?)and a room quiet enough to actually hold a conversation! Zoots alor!
The reviews we read were right--the filet mignon is ultra high quality and the appetizers were creative and delicious...esp. the mushroom ravioli!
Not far from things off the I 15, Bernardo';s owner comes by and checks on everyone as well, and the water glasses were kept filled to the brim without asking. We'll be back.
In our family we like to take different entrees and firsts, and then share and experience them all. There are very few restaurants that can avoid repeating themselves and suggest different tastes of every dish and side, usually only expensive restaurants can do that and even there, we find many boring places.
Bernard'O on the other hand is a great surprise as they can deliver that diversity, without failing a single dish, side or desert, yet at a very considerable price.
The only thing i would recommend to improve, is replacing the wine list or inventory. We tried two, one turned sour and one was too flat.
