I have gone to Bennetts’s since it opened. it’s character has changed entirely since then, and for the worse.
Despite a reservation, we were seated adjacent to the bar where a loud and large set of Happy Hour patrons were clustered. There was a quieter table available but we were told it had been reserved. Of course we had a reservation too; for some reason the people coming in an hour had higher precedence.
Discussion with the waitress was fruitless. When a slightly better located table came, she did move us there. But her message the whole time was “there’s nothing I can do.” We learned also that listed dishes were correctly described: it made no difference to her that one eater’s kale salad was half romaine; or that my arugula salad was all kale. She explained this was how they were always prepared (wrong; previous visits were correctly constructed).
The assistant manager came by, with the same message. As he was leaving, one of my companions called out to him, “if you had any respect for your customers, you’d buy us a round of drinks.” Her drink alone was removed from the tab.
If you’re reading this, Bennetts, please understand you have alienated long-term customers who do not intend to return.
I have been coming here for years and the service and food has been hit or miss in the past. Last night, I had a wonderful dining experience. A gentleman whom I presume is a manager took great care of us and recommended a pinot which was excellent. Our server Emily was attentive and very friendly. Salmon was delicious! Great experience!
The service was great! Our waiter was super friendly and attentive. The restaurant looks stuffy from the outside but it’s not at all. The vibe on a Saturday evening was pretty laid back and fun. And most importantly, the food doesn’t skimp on portion size or flavor! All around great place.
Bennett's is a solid experience. It has a limited menu, but I find that neighborhood gems do better when they're focused on quality. I appreciate the consistently pleasant staff... and my friends (older retired couple past their 60s) was pleasantly charmed. I was so proud that they had a good experience there.
Bennett's happy hour food menu is limited but good, well beyond pub food. The regular menu is decent but is pricey considering the crowded, noisy ambiance, as are the wines. Benetts does fine since Mercer Island has limited nicer dining...Good note, since this is a neighborhood restaurant, chances arestrong that you will run into someone you know. I recommend reservations. Happy hour is popular.
The food is usually good, reasonably priced, and they have good service as well. Our only complaint, which is a strong one, is that it is very noisy. Its very difficult to have a conversation, and we get frustrated because of it. Its typically busy, as the Island has very few good restaurant choices. The design ( high noise level, hard surfaces including the chairs) encourages customers to make your visit a quick one. We would go more often if they could make corrections.
High noise level ( I think you refer to it as energetic) seems to be favored by many new restaurant owners/designers, and the dissatisfaction level is a frequent topic among friends.
Bennett's was awesome and we'll return there again and again. We had a group that hadn't seen each other for years. We weren't 100% sure of how many people would be there and everyone arrived at different times and we were definitely noisy and wandering around our table sharing pictures and stories and hugs. The staff at Bennett's could not have been more gracious and kind with us and EVERYONE loved the food and the service and thanked me for choosing the venue - but the thanks really belongs to Bennett's. We will be back - and hopefully less rowdy next time ;-)
I usually do not leave reviews that are not good. I usually just move on and don't go back. Our server made this experience at Bennett's unenjoyable. We met friends for dinner on a Thursday night 8/24/17. The food was good but our server had an attitude. We had a table for 4. Our server spilled one of our drinks - not the whole thing, but it sloshed over the side and splattered on the table and floor next to my purse. Our server consistently reached over/in front of one of us to grab plates and glassware from the other side of the table. If he was on the left side of the table, he would reach over to the right, and vice versa. My friend asked to taste the salad dressing before her salad was tossed with it and he said "I'll see if I can find the time to do that." Our server clearly did not like her. Two meals came out and were served - and then my friend and her husband waited for another five minutes before their meals came out. I couldn't help but feel this was retaliatory on our server's part. Other servers brought our meals, and our server never came back to see how our meals were nor offer us anything else, until he brought the bill. Our server clearly wanted us to leave. The bill for the 4 of us was $180.00 (drinks and dinner before tip) - which I'm happy to pay if it was a good experience. Sadly, this one was not.
Our server was great didn't mind coming back when we weren't ready to order. Had a toasted cheese sandwich and salad - salad was great, too much bread in the sandwich, it was two thick slices of bread with melted cheese but not much flavor, could use a tomato, or some capers, or a sauce or something - nice serving of the sparkling Wine.
Bennett's is always excellent. The tomato soup alone is worth the drive. They use mostly locally-sourced ingredients and make nearly everything in-house. This is an excellent place for Sunday brunch or lunch on a weekday. They open at 11:30, but usually are not busy until a little after noon, so if you arrive early, usually no wait for a table.
We wanted a good place for a early lunch for our former exchange from Switzerland, back visiting with his fiancé. It worked well for this. I was a little concerned that the Blue Angels would keep us away, but it worked out well.
We had an early dinner after watching Shakespeare at Luther Burbank Park. Parking is convenient in the same building as the restaurant. They have a nice patio (but after being in the park for the afternoon we went inside - which is also well laid out.
Service was quick and friendly, wine list is modest in size but has a number of good and modestly priced wines. Their calamari was very tender, with fried fennel bits mingled with herbs and the (fine corn meal dusted) calamari for a very nice combination of tastes. They did a great job with salmon and halibut - very crisp surface, nicely moist inside, and very nice accompaniments. The pesto on the halibut was very good, salmon was so nicely done the blueberry infused sauce was superfluous - needed a bit more "dark" flavor to fit in (maybe a bit of mustard).

We arrived for lunch at 11:30, which is when they open. We prefer a booth on raised area above the restaurant, and were able to be seated there. FYI - there is a smallish outside eating area but it's near the traffic so not appealing yo us.
The food was great, service excellent.
Of course, as the restaurant filled up the noise level went up so after awhile we had a hard time hearing each other. The place was packed within a half hour of when we arrived so obviously lots of other people think highly of Bennett's. Rightfully so.
Always great food. Until yesterday, I have given Bennett's soups top ratings, particularly the tomato and, when they have it, the corn nut soup. Yesterday's asparagus soup did not live up to the standards of the others. I would not again order the asparagus soup. But definitely get the tomato soup.
Met a friend here for dinner. It was happy hour and there were really great deals going! The parking options are also really nice. One of the reasons I don't go out to eat in Seattle is the parking is atrocious. The food was good, the service was good, I would recommend!
