About Bennett's Chop & Railhouse
In every city, there is a natural gathering spot for city folk and neighborhood people in the know. This place in Saint Paul is know as Bennett's Chop & Railhouse. Located on West Seventh & Victoria, it is the perfect meeting place of uptown and downtown, of quiet neighborhood and big city lights.
It's called a chophouse because it specializes in a casual steakhouse atmosphere with top-of-the-line cuts of the finest meats. It is a Rail-house because it is on the old railroad line serving the city and rail drinks (as well as top brands) are served in the convivial atmosphere of the horseshoe bar.
And of course Bennett's is Bennett's because owners Joe and Meghan Bennett ensure that welcoming hospitality is always served. They have taken their decades of experiences with leading hospitality brands and translated it into an intimate venue where you're not only a customer, but more importantly, a welcome guest.

Bennett's Chop & Railhouse Ratings and Reviews
First time, quite disappointed. New server and it showed. Table was by the door & bar. Noisy and every time door opened a blast of cold air came in, asked to be moved but were told no. Ribs were OK, the chicken was overcooked and dry and the steak was ordered Med but came out Rare. Server never checked back. We will NOT return.
Great spot for pregame. Great quality food, full entree or apps at low prices. Old school dinner club feel, great for conversation. Shuttle to Xcel and back and you can bring your drink onboard! Free parking in neighborhood with plenty of open places on street. No traffic to or from restaurant removed any stress with getting to the game. Whether you want to impress your date or catch up with an old buddy, this is a great choice!
My husband and I have been to Bennett's a number of times. Their steaks are great and we've never had a problem with service, although we have gotten to the restaurant, found that there was an hour wait for a table, and chose to go elsewhere. This past Saturday night was stressful. We had made a reservation a day ahead of time but there was no table when we arrived. We were soon seated next to the bar with a rowdy crowd and a sport event on the TVs. We had a direct view of what was going on in the kitchen. We must have sat for 15 minutes before our server took our drink order. Then it took her another 15 minutes to take our food order. It was an hour and 15 minutes from the time we were seated until our food arrived. My friend's steak was cooked medium well instead of medium rare, but the server never came back to check on how we were doing. He didn't enjoy his meal, and upon his request, was comped for the meal. Instead of enjoying our experience, we were anxious to leave, and I felt bad for my friends since I was the one who had suggested the restaurant. This was not a typical Bennett's experience. However, I will not return on a Saturday evening.
First time dining at Bennett's and we really enjoyed the evening. A rare Saturday night with no concert/ game crowd so our table was waiting for us when we arrived.
Everything was priced fairly, and the food was as we expected. People... this isn't a high end steak house. It is a family owned neighborhood restaurant that I believed provided a good value and food that was on point.
I will be back.
We walked inside & found a very small, open & loud dining room. Some people were standing around talking like they were in a bar.
Our waitress neglected to tell us about the specials & although friendly enough, she was nothing to brag about.
We ordered sandwiches & thought they were just ok; the fries were tasty.
Honestly, I don't believe we'll be back.
Really enjoyed our first visit to Bennett's. The ribeye was perfectly cooked, au gratin potatoes were full of flavor. One of my sons loved his blue cheese burger and fries - I also vouch for the fries - they were great. My other son had the seafood risotto and thought it had too much white wine; I tried it and agree. Our server was fantastic, both attentive and full of personality. We can't wait to go back.
We always love trying neighborhood restaurants. This one was recommend by a couple couples we know. The server was admittedly not very knowledgeable about the menu, so she was not able to give recommendations. She waited way too long to come back to get out order. The stuffed mushrooms were my favorite thing we orders, would get those again. The salad with entree was not my favorite, it was a smaller chopped salad with way too much mystery dressing and odd black olives on top. My husband ordered Stella off the tap menu and it came in a bottle. My meatloaf was just ok, but his walleye was really good. All in all, I would give it another try.
Everything was great exceptional; however the lettuce in my house chop salad was not as cold as it should be.
I had the seafood Risotto and it was incredible. Hubby had the NY Strip and he said the seasoning was perfect.
I guess I expected a little nicer decor. I am guessing that the decor matters not to the regular clientele.
The building is a concrete block building that looks to be a small shop in the past. It is a very dated look when you get inside but the ambience and staff are very kind and helpful. We were seated immediately; it was not very busy. The waiter made it to our table quickly and got us our water and took our appetizer order. We got the crab cakes which are 2 decent sized crab cakes. Flavor was good but nothing spectacular for the money (11 or 13). House made salads were served before our meal and they were really good. The lettuce is shredded. I ordered the Tomahawk steak which was presented as a ribeye. My wife got the sirloin. The doneness of the steaks, both med-rare, were good. The time that it took to get them there was good as well. The first few bites of my steak were good and then I ran into a bunch of gristle. It was consistent through the entire steak. I honestly have not had a tougher steak than that, especially when I pay over $40 for a steak. I did not say anything to the waiter as I was being modest. Porterhouse in Lakeville was amazing and was 1 million times better. Overall the waiter was very good and very attentive. He kept our water full and checked on us periodically. Service wise, I would recommend this place, however, if you are looking for a steak, I would find another place. Maybe their other food is better.
I have wanted to check this out for a long time. This was our first visit and we were not disappointed. Large diverse menu to meet most people's desires. Food was delicious and the service was friendly and prompt. Noise level was nice so you could converse with friends. Price point was affordable. The restaurant was clean and neat, but nothing overly fancy for a white table cloth restaurant. We will definitely come back and try other items on the menu.
Food was mediocre at best. Two families went out for Father's Day. They totally forgot to make one entree. They did comp that one which was nice. Steak was just ok and the Au Gratin potatoes were bone dry. Might have been worth it if it was cheaper but will definitely not go back.
We had a birthday celebration and went here specifically for all you can eat Crab. I called ahead as I wanted to be sure they would have this special going in as this was the reason we chose here & they advised they would be having it... After being seated & telling our sever this is what we were going to be ordering, she served our salads & then the Manager/Owner came to our table to tell us they no longer had any crab however we were welcome to look at the menu again. He then offered to run to Sams Club since we all wanted crab...... we got the crab and then we're not only charged the full rate of the meal after having to wait 2hrs, but we ended up getting charged twice! No discounts & no apologies... I will never recommend this restaurant in the future!
We have dined here before and did not have a bad experience. This time was awful. We had to ask 3 times to be seated with a reservation. The table we were placed at was open the entire time. I have not idea why seating the 3 of us was such an ordeal. My Juicy Lucy was seriously undone. The surrounding meat was almost raw. I will give eating here again serious second thoughts.
