Benihana - Short Hills Ratings and Reviews
My family and I love Benihana and my son opted to go there for his birthday dinner. We had a 6:15 reservation and despite how crowded it was, we were seated by 6:20. The service was very good...waitress was friendly and efficient. The chef was low key, but everything tasted good. My one criticism after years of going here is that there seems to be less food for more money. I remember having plates filled with food and that didn't seem to be the case. There was also an extra charge for fried rice or noodles ($3) which I don't remember having to pay. Other than that, we had an enjoyable dinner.
Benihana is one of my favorite restaurants. I come for my birthday every year. But when I went on a Saturday evening I felt rushed to finish my food , as the other family sitting with us finished early. This was the first time they had done something like this.
It’s sad because I didn’t want to write negative review. I attempted to speak with a manager who could possibly fix the situation. Everything was decent until check out. The server who we thought we liked chased me and my boyfriend out the restaurant. I thought we shorted the bill. Come to find out she was asking for more money on the tip. I believe the suggested amount was 24 & some change in which we gave her a 20. (Not obligated to tip anything) I was already out the door but she told my bf he owed her another $10 otherwise she would have to pay the bill out of pocket. Not even thinking he gave it to her. I was LIVID! Because I woulda never let that slide and she was so ungrateful and greedy. Those type of frauds shouldn’t be working in customer service. I called the next day to speak with the manager. He wasn’t in and was supposed to call me back that evening. 2 days later and he still hasn’t. I’ll never recommend or go back. It’s sad because I was gonna make her my new bartender and we go out for drinks often! She ruined my whole outlook on the restaurant and it shows that the manager doesn’t care. I should have went to get my refund back that night like I wanted to!
Although they were accepting reservations the wait time for a table was almost an hour. We were sat about an hour after we arrived (which was 10 minutes early). They continued to tell customers they were the next table to be sat. Once we were sat it was another 30 minutes until the server came around. They were severely under staffed and if they had communicated what was going on then customers would have been much more understanding of the circumstances.
Went on a Saturday night with a reservation. Turns out it was just a suggestion as we were seated 40 minute after our scheduled time. The place is a good place for a birthday celebration or a night out for casual dining with a group of friends. Just don't expect to be promptly seating at your appointed time.
Been coming here for years and it’s about time we find another hibachi place. With a reservation, it took about 40 minutes to get seated plus another 30 minutes before we saw any food (with a 2 year old this was not enjoyable). On top of that, service was horrible. Had to order my daughters drink twice (they forgot about it first time after taking forever) and never brought my husband the refill he asked for. The bill was incorrect (extra wine was added) and had to be fixed. And overall the food was ok. Will no longer be returning.
While the food and service and chef great, despite having a confirmed reservation, we still had to wait for a table - approx 45 minutes. The restaurant needs to do a better job at reservation management and cater to those reserved clientele first and before walk-ins.
My family came in @4:45 for our wedding anniversary, and when we arrived there was no host for about five minutes. Next we waited twenty minutes to be seated, so just about a half an hour meanwhile the restaurant only had 3 tables everyone looked confused about how to seat the restaurant meanwhile more and more people were coming in. Dinner it self was good up until the end when we were rushed from our table it was being bussed and set while we were still sitting there as a restaurant manager myself that is a no-no . The experience is from start to finish.
I have been coming to Benihana in Shorthills since I was about 7, so 10 years and we always go for my birthday each year. I love Benihana and it is my favorite hibachi place, but on Wednesday night when I went to redeem my birthday coupon with my brother, his girlfriend, and my fiancé, I was severely disappointed. Every year I just show the number on the birthday coupon and even though the coupon says it needs to be printed out, the waitress always takes the number and I never have a problem. This time the waitress told me I couldn't after she asked the manager. I then told her that I did not have a printer at home, that this had never been a problem before and that this was the last day before the coupon expired, so I had to use it that night. We even ordered more food than usual because we knew we were getting money off. I asked the waitress if she could ask the manager if I could print it out on their printer and once again she came back with a no. I then had to leave the restaurant with my fiancé and go to a Kinko's to print out the coupon. We didn't want to make a scene, but the whole ordeal was very embarrassing. Not once did the manager come over and talk to us himself and not once did they come up with any solutions to help the problem. Even when we came back from Kinko's with the printed out coupon, he still didn't come over to talk to us. I just think that in this modern age to make a customer print something out when most people do not have printers anymore and everything is electronic, is insane. From now on I'll figure out a way to print it but, they could've made an exception this time rather than having their customer leave the restaurant to print it. We come to the restaurant at least once every two months, not just on my birthday. After coming here for 10 years I thought we would be treated better, but it's clear that a customer is just another face to you guys and it doesn't really matter. I guess that's what you get with a chain restaurant.
I had a reservation at 5 pm . We were led to a table for 8 which had squeezed 9 people.
The waiter took drink orders , then dinner orders. Soup was served. The waiter returned to say that there was not enough salad dressing and we would have to wait 15 minutes.
The chef finally arrived and he was not competent at all. Halfway through the meal , the waiter returned asking did we still want salad? It came with watered down dressing
It was my so's birthday and NO ONE even mentioned this ....Not even a "happy Birthday"from the hostess, server , or cook.
My last time..there are so many Hibachi restaurants .
We had a reservation at 7pm, but we didn't get seated ftill 720pm. Then, the wait continues, we were sitting around the table for 40 mins until they had an available chef. They wouldn't serve us water or anything while we were waiting.
But the food is pretty good. We had filet mignon medium rare, and the chef had it very well. It was juicy and tender. But the rice was undercooked.
They knew it was my husband's birthday, so they came and sang the birthday song and gave us icecream and a picture for free.
Like others, we had a long wait in a very cold lobby along with some big groups, even with a reservation for just three people. And we had another wait for our chef, though she was charming and delightful with our table. I wonder if the ventilation in the room is adequate, because all of our clothes smelled of grease and we had to wash our coats when we got home. Also, even though the reservation indicated we were there for a birthday, and the hostess acknowledged the event, we never got a celebration at the table -- as other tables did. All in all, we don't plan to return anytime soon. Lots of other options available.
Users are warned for no-show reservations. What happens to the restaurants? We showed up right on time for a 6:45 reservation (two families, each with two young kids) and were not seated for nearly an hour. The lobby was PACKED with big groups all frustrated by the delays and the "automatic doors" that couldn't be shut fast enough to keep the frigid cold out of the waiting area and the rest of the restaurant. Our waiter forgot to turn on the grill, so when the chef came to start, he had to "come back in 10 minutes" (thus, we waited again). The waiter would disappear for long periods when asked for simple requests (re-fills of drinks, kids chop-sticks, etc.) and wound up screwing up the other couple's order. It was a 3 hour experience for what we expected to be 1 to 1 and a half. The staff was calm as calm could be, almost as though they didn't care about the wait. I overheard the reservationist making small talk with someone booking for weeks out on the phone, all the while ignoring the people trying to check in and find out how much longer the wait would be. I would not go back, simply put.
The service at this restaurant has gone down somewhat. Seems that staff and management could benefit from additional training. Food prep is often dependent on who your chef is on the hibachi. This time around we had an excellent one, who was both entertaining and cooked/seasoned the food the absolute perfection.
I am totally disappointed. We had an 8:30 PM reservation on New Year's Eve so that we could go to a party after we waited for more than an hour and a half in a freezing lobby that was only 51° , we could not even get a drink or sit down. when we finally got our seat it was almost 10 o'clock and then we ordered drinks. My sake came in a chipped ceramic bottle and then as I tried to drink it the little cup had a hole in it and it poured all over my fancy dress. I asked the manager for a new one because I wasn't sure if it had porcelain debris in it and I couldn't drink it out of that cup, he was annoyed I bothered him and it took 15 minutes to get a new one and after asking 3 people I received the napkin I needed to clean up. The portions of the food we're very small we had to pay extra to get fried rice. I don't believe anybody in my party was satisfied with the food taste or quality or portion size. I do not believe that the meal was worth $160 and I would never recommend this restaurant.
My family and I (party of 4) arrived on New Years Eve at 620pm for a 630pm reservation. At 710pm we walked out. Every time we asked the host how much longer, they kept saying we are the next table and waiting for the current table to get up. Well after watching countless other parties be seated and it was way past our reservation time, we left. 40 minutes to wait for a table with a reservation is completely unacceptable. If we arrived 40 minutes late, the restaurant would turn us away. I will never go back to Benihana.
