While the food and service and chef great, despite having a confirmed reservation, we still had to wait for a table - approx 45 minutes. The restaurant needs to do a better job at reservation management and cater to those reserved clientele first and before walk-ins.

Reservations are a MUST !! We had a 7:45pm reservation and were seated at 8:25pm.
Food was great, service was quick, however, .... you cannot be in ANY kind of a hurry.
We decided to RELAX and go the Bar for a Beer (or two).

This Benihana is a nice place for a child’s birthday or family-friendly event. Not overly romantic due to be noise level but fun for families and groups.

My family came in @4:45 for our wedding anniversary, and when we arrived there was no host for about five minutes. Next we waited twenty minutes to be seated, so just about a half an hour meanwhile the restaurant only had 3 tables everyone looked confused about how to seat the restaurant meanwhile more and more people were coming in. Dinner it self was good up until the end when we were rushed from our table it was being bussed and set while we were still sitting there as a restaurant manager myself that is a no-no . The experience is from start to finish.

I have been coming to Benihana in Shorthills since I was about 7, so 10 years and we always go for my birthday each year. I love Benihana and it is my favorite hibachi place, but on Wednesday night when I went to redeem my birthday coupon with my brother, his girlfriend, and my fiancé, I was severely disappointed. Every year I just show the number on the birthday coupon and even though the coupon says it needs to be printed out, the waitress always takes the number and I never have a problem. This time the waitress told me I couldn't after she asked the manager. I then told her that I did not have a printer at home, that this had never been a problem before and that this was the last day before the coupon expired, so I had to use it that night. We even ordered more food than usual because we knew we were getting money off. I asked the waitress if she could ask the manager if I could print it out on their printer and once again she came back with a no. I then had to leave the restaurant with my fiancé and go to a Kinko's to print out the coupon. We didn't want to make a scene, but the whole ordeal was very embarrassing. Not once did the manager come over and talk to us himself and not once did they come up with any solutions to help the problem. Even when we came back from Kinko's with the printed out coupon, he still didn't come over to talk to us. I just think that in this modern age to make a customer print something out when most people do not have printers anymore and everything is electronic, is insane. From now on I'll figure out a way to print it but, they could've made an exception this time rather than having their customer leave the restaurant to print it. We come to the restaurant at least once every two months, not just on my birthday. After coming here for 10 years I thought we would be treated better, but it's clear that a customer is just another face to you guys and it doesn't really matter. I guess that's what you get with a chain restaurant.

I had a reservation at 5 pm . We were led to a table for 8 which had squeezed 9 people.

The waiter took drink orders , then dinner orders. Soup was served. The waiter returned to say that there was not enough salad dressing and we would have to wait 15 minutes.
The chef finally arrived and he was not competent at all. Halfway through the meal , the waiter returned asking did we still want salad? It came with watered down dressing

It was my so's birthday and NO ONE even mentioned this ....Not even a "happy Birthday"from the hostess, server , or cook.
My last time..there are so many Hibachi restaurants .

We had a reservation at 7pm, but we didn't get seated ftill 720pm. Then, the wait continues, we were sitting around the table for 40 mins until they had an available chef. They wouldn't serve us water or anything while we were waiting.
But the food is pretty good. We had filet mignon medium rare, and the chef had it very well. It was juicy and tender. But the rice was undercooked.
They knew it was my husband's birthday, so they came and sang the birthday song and gave us icecream and a picture for free.

Like others, we had a long wait in a very cold lobby along with some big groups, even with a reservation for just three people. And we had another wait for our chef, though she was charming and delightful with our table. I wonder if the ventilation in the room is adequate, because all of our clothes smelled of grease and we had to wash our coats when we got home. Also, even though the reservation indicated we were there for a birthday, and the hostess acknowledged the event, we never got a celebration at the table -- as other tables did. All in all, we don't plan to return anytime soon. Lots of other options available.

Users are warned for no-show reservations. What happens to the restaurants? We showed up right on time for a 6:45 reservation (two families, each with two young kids) and were not seated for nearly an hour. The lobby was PACKED with big groups all frustrated by the delays and the "automatic doors" that couldn't be shut fast enough to keep the frigid cold out of the waiting area and the rest of the restaurant. Our waiter forgot to turn on the grill, so when the chef came to start, he had to "come back in 10 minutes" (thus, we waited again). The waiter would disappear for long periods when asked for simple requests (re-fills of drinks, kids chop-sticks, etc.) and wound up screwing up the other couple's order. It was a 3 hour experience for what we expected to be 1 to 1 and a half. The staff was calm as calm could be, almost as though they didn't care about the wait. I overheard the reservationist making small talk with someone booking for weeks out on the phone, all the while ignoring the people trying to check in and find out how much longer the wait would be. I would not go back, simply put.

The service at this restaurant has gone down somewhat. Seems that staff and management could benefit from additional training. Food prep is often dependent on who your chef is on the hibachi. This time around we had an excellent one, who was both entertaining and cooked/seasoned the food the absolute perfection.

I am totally disappointed. We had an 8:30 PM reservation on New Year's Eve so that we could go to a party after we waited for more than an hour and a half in a freezing lobby that was only 51° , we could not even get a drink or sit down. when we finally got our seat it was almost 10 o'clock and then we ordered drinks. My sake came in a chipped ceramic bottle and then as I tried to drink it the little cup had a hole in it and it poured all over my fancy dress. I asked the manager for a new one because I wasn't sure if it had porcelain debris in it and I couldn't drink it out of that cup, he was annoyed I bothered him and it took 15 minutes to get a new one and after asking 3 people I received the napkin I needed to clean up. The portions of the food we're very small we had to pay extra to get fried rice. I don't believe anybody in my party was satisfied with the food taste or quality or portion size. I do not believe that the meal was worth $160 and I would never recommend this restaurant.

My family and I (party of 4) arrived on New Years Eve at 620pm for a 630pm reservation. At 710pm we walked out. Every time we asked the host how much longer, they kept saying we are the next table and waiting for the current table to get up. Well after watching countless other parties be seated and it was way past our reservation time, we left. 40 minutes to wait for a table with a reservation is completely unacceptable. If we arrived 40 minutes late, the restaurant would turn us away. I will never go back to Benihana.

I have been to other Benihana restaurants and this was by far the worst. The food was not up to par and worst of all, the service was terrible. We started our Hibachi dinner 1 hour after our reservation time. Our waitress did not know the menu and could not guide us properly. We did not receive all the items that our meals included. All the waiters were standing around and chatting instead of serving their respective tables. Service was slow and just not attentive. The food was not high quality and did not match up to the name of the restaurant chain. Very disappointed.

Benihana was an awful experience, seated late behind others without reservations, nothing to drink in over an hour and awful service with workers too busy chatting amongst themselves! My wife and I spoke to the manager and walked out...what a waste of 1.5 hours. Parents do not get to have a date night often, and this ruined our night! 😡

Totally ridiculous; they take reservations with NO intention of filling them. A 7pm reservation we walked out at 8p with no table in sight. They take and take and never seat. Such a messed up system. Avoid on weekends - go on off times only. If you enjoy dinner at 3:30 this is the perfect place for you.

Absolutely awful! We called way in advance to make a 6:45pm reservation. When we arrived the waiting area was packed, very chaotic. The hostess seemed unable to
handle the situation. We waited approximately 45min to be seated, not sure why they bother to take reservations. Once we finally sat down we had to wait another 30min before our chef came to the table. The chef was awful also, didn’t engage us at all, ZERO entertainment. He cooked the food and left promptly. NEVER AGAIN! Don’t waste your money. Everything about this place was subpar and awful.

I have visited the Short Hills Benihana several times and was very disappointed with my experience this time around; I think the staff was overwhelmed with the holiday rush. The waiting area was a free-for-all and it seemed every party with a reservation, including ours, was seated 20 minutes or more past their scheduled time. Once seated, we waited more than half an hour for the meal to begin. Our waitress was very attentive and apologetic for the wait; however, our chef seemed distracted and uninterested, and he disappeared in the middle of preparing our food at least three times. The food was very good, as usual, but the staff definitely did not deliver on the fun hibachi experience, which is the whole point of going to Benihana. Hopefully, their service will return to normal after the holidays.

We went here for dinner on Christmas, so it was crowded, which was expected. Service was a little slow, which was also expected. We were a little disappointed that our waiter was not too familiar with the food on the menu, and was not really able to answer any questions. Other than that, we really enjoyed our food. The chef was great!

I understand that tonight is Christmas Eve, but waiting 50 minutes for a reservation to be honored is pretty ridiculous. It’s not as though the mathematics behind how long it takes to turn a table should change (at least that dramatically). Overbooking, while profitable, is a surefire way to irritate customers — straight out of the airline playbook.

We eat at Benihana at least once a month and always have a pleasent experience except for the last two visits. On November 13th, my family and I shared our table with another couple, their teenage son, and their daughter who immediately recognize the NEW cook and between the two they shared some words and laughter throughout the meal. The problem started when I didn’t get the noodles I ordered and instead of apologizing and sending someone to get them for me, he simply pointed to his notes and said the waiter didn’t write it down. Then, when he served the fried rice he over topped the bowls for the other family and didn’t have enough for one of our sons. On December 24th we also had a NEW cook. The family we shared our table with were also talking and laughing with the cook. We asked him twice to give us more ginger sauce but he just pointed to the food he was cooking and said we had to wait until he was finished cooking and sure enough that’s when we got the sauce. Then he said, “I have a problem, I have extra fried rice, who wants it?” I have to mention that only our family had ordered fried rice but somehow he managed to have enough fried rice for two people from the other family that never ordered fried rice, yet my family ended up paying for it. He did the same exact thing with the noodles. In both occasions we felt that the key to eating well at Benihana is to make jokes and keep a conversation going with the cook but in all honesty I don’t blame the NEW cooks for what happened, I blame the persons that train them. I believe they should stand next to the NEW cooks while they’re cooking for at least the first two meals they cook.

We go every year for our birthday s, but this year we definitely noticed a decline in service! Food still tasty. Show good. But service is lacking! Waitress never came to refill our drinks, and took forever bringing appetizers out!

Cook knocked over the ceramic things you put the ginger and mustard in by accident.
My boyfriend found pieces of ceramic in his fried rice and food!!
Manager came over, and was like "what do you want me to do about it"? And we said we wanted another one. Which we finally got after about an hour! And the DIDN'T take it off bill!
To make the evening worse ,they never asked if we want tea or dessert! And since we were there for a birthday , they never came to sing or give free dessert!

Not sure if we will go back! Eat at own risk!

We had a great time at Benihana for my boyfriend's birthday!

Food was great as usual and the chef was very engaging. Our waitress was also very attentive with out being pushy and knowledgeable about the menu. We went with a vegetarian friend who really enjoyed his tofu dish and the chef even offered to cook it first, so there wouldn't be any cross contamination. We all enjoyed our drinks as well, though they can be a little pricy--totally worth it and fun for a celebration. We'll keep coming back, again and again!

Thank you Benihana!

Food was great as always and the cooks are professional and seasoned.

The service was a little off, with some mistakes being made on the food cart prep for the chef.

The policy has changed to try and fit 9 people at a table, which helps the restaurant move people through quicker and saves money, but the tables are a bit tight when you have the full nine seated.
