Benihana - Short Hills Ratings and Reviews
This meal was a disaster from beginning to end. We were celebrating my son’s 11th birthday - 7 kids, 2 adults. They seated us 35 mins after our res. Then waited 15 mins for wait staff to even acknowledge us. When they came out to cook, grill was not on so waited another 15 mins. Waitress got my son’s food allergy wrong. Dropped trays, trash on the floor. Employees screwing around hit my daughter in the head with garbage (what?) It was a disaster!
Going to Benihana is what it is. We went to celebrate my son's birthday because of how the food is cooked in front of you. The food is good, we all got the Teriyaki Steak. The chef cooking in front of you is good and the birthday singing is a nice touch of course. Overall, it was a good experience. Talking to people at the table is also nice.
On the negative side,
1) the food is way overpriced for what it is,
2) Had a reservation for 7pm and waited 30 minutes to be seated,
3) waiter disappeared once he delivered each dish. Did not check if table needed water or anything else, also forgot to bring out or check if an appetizer was brought out.
The worst experience I’ve ever had at hibachi restaurant. The place was so full that the waitress never even asked us we needed water or refill on our drinks. The appetizers came after we were done with the hibachi meal. We had a reservation at 1, but got sitted at 1:25. The ice cream was good. The hibachi cook was great.
While our food was good and Sidney was a great chef, we found the general staff highly unprofessional. They were running around and laughing in their boh office instead of attending to guests. We waited to be seated 30 minutes past our reservation time. Hospitality was lacking and will likely prevent us from returning again.
Benihana restaurants are usually very good. Our experience on this particular evening was not. Here are the highlights of our experience. Excellent was how the steak was cooked. The exotic mojito is always on point. Also the restaurant was busy and we were seated reasonably quickly (Thank you Open Table). The ingredients used tasted fresh. The bad. (Food wise) The fried rice my wife and I️ were looking forward to was over cooked and it did not taste good at all. (Service wise) My wife asked the server for an order of noddles to come out ASAP to feed my 2 year old. (We have requested this at other Benihana restaurants without an issue). The server said it could not be done and that we would have to wait for the chef to cook it in front of us. We told the server that we have never had an issue ordering ahead but he insisted that it could not be done. My 2 year old was hungry as it was past the usual dinner time, so my wife had to feed him food we brought with us just in case. Needless to say our toddler did not touch the noodles the chef cooked. My other complaint is that the sushi appetizer that I️ order as soon as we sat did not arrive to the table before the main course was being prepared. The service was definitely slow.
The service was horrible. No offense to our waitress, who was new and really trying. But we had a reservation for 7:15 and weren't seated until 7:50. Service was terribly slow once seated. And our orders were a bit messed up. The noise level was off the charts. Don't go there if you want to have conversation with anyone not seated right next to you. My understanding is there is new ownership who doesn't know what they are doing yet. So maybe wait a few months before going there...
We had a 6:15 reservation and didn't get seated until 6:50. The seating was unorganized and loud. I almost missed them calling us for our seating. Before I took my coat off the waitress was asking me for my order. If was extremely rushed as not to make the other customers who had already been seat wait. Our chef seemed friendly enough however she spoke Spanish during most of her meal preparation which only 4 of ten people at the table spoke.
The food was overpriced and I was told, incorrectly, that the portions were small and I needed to order 6 dinners when 2 of our party wanted to split. In the end we took up 1/2 our food, which is wasteful.
The beers also arrived warm - even after asking for a new beer - which also arrived warm. Asking why, we were told that 'maybe the refrigerator is broken."
The chef, Alex, I think, was fun and energetic and funny. But the schtick needs an update or chefs need to be allowed more room to improvise. Seeing the same jokes and moves at each table really lessens the impact, especially for 1st timers, which I brought in.
We had a 6:45 reservation for my daughters 18th Birthday on a Wednesday. We were not seated until 7:30. We didn’t have a chef for another 45 minutes. The host was not accommodating and in fact bordered on rude. That said, our chef Nirmal was awesome and hilarious. He made up for our frustration with the wait. Our waitress was also very sweet and helpful as well as cheerful.
I also think it’s a nerve to charge extra for fried rice (only white ric is included) since no other hibachi does that.
Seemed short on chefs. Nirmal was the only reason her birthday dinner was not ruined.
Experience was horrible. We frequent this restaurant quite a bit and always for our son's birthday as it is his favorite restaurant. We actually have pictures of our family every year at his birthday since 2 years old and he is 6 now. It is our go to
Place when our children are not eating a lot because we know they will eat there. Tonight we made reservations for 8:15 and got seated at 9 pm. When I checked in for my reservation the hosted rolled her eyes at me and laughed because I arrived earlier than the reserved time and she knew she couldn't seat me. At my reservation time I was told a few minutes and was continually told a few minutes for the next 45 min until we complained enough we got sat. It is apparent this restaurant cannot accommodate large crowds of people that walked into their restaurant. I think they had a lot of walk ins that they wouldn't turn away. In addition we saw the manager arguing with patrons who became frustrated with their similar experience. Like I said, we frequented this restaurant quite about and booked reservations every other month. I really don't want to ever go back again.
Food and service was excellent, as usual, but made the mistake of going at 6:15. Way too many little kids, felt like dining in a kids birthday party! When I'm spending that much on dining out, I expect to be able to hear the conversations of the people I'm with. Next time I'll book a lot later.
The food show really depends on your cook. Sometimes it's excellent and then sometimes it's just ok. Food is always DELISH! Service though could be better. This is the third time we have waited for the check for 15 minutes after we asked for it. Then to charge us..another 15. And the ladies room is gross.
This Benihana location continues to go downhill. We used to look forward to a trip to Benihanas, but now, each yearly visit reminds us why we don't go there much anymore. If I do go, I will no longer order scallops or lobster as you take your chances on whether the cook will be able to cook them properly. After paying so much for a lobster tail, it's very disappointing to find it inedible. Mine was burnt and so overdone that I literally couldn't eat it. It was like rubber. My scallops were barely edible. They were black on the outside and slightly underdone in the middle. If you are going to order seafood, stick with shrimp as they never seem to ruin that. When another diner at my table asked that their steak be cooked a bit more as it was not what they ordered, the chef argued with them about it, claiming it was cooked medium as they ordered it. The diner felt that it was too rare. Regardless of the chef's opinion, he should have just listened to the diner and put it back on the grill. Our chef also missed the shrimp on one diner's order and had to ask for more to be brought. Service by the servers is also usually poor. The bathrooms were dirty with toilet paper on the floor. When I called to make a reservation, the person on the phone was snarky. "Well, we only make reservations over an hour in advance, but we have room today so I'll do it for you this time." While this may be their reservation policy, they could have communicated it politely. Imagine a very snarky voice who was doing me a big favor by taking my reservation. It's a shame this location is so poorly run as Benihanas has been a favorite place of ours for a long time, but Short Hills is the worst location I've seen.
The atmoshphere was great the chef BOB was awesome if i was to come again i want him to be our chef again, the waiter we had was terrible he kept on forgetting things gave me the wrong drink i didnt ask for., was not knowledgable about anything. BOB knew everything i wish i could have gave him the tip instead. Overall nice place took a long time to be served as well
Our reservation was 6:15pm. We were seated at 6:15pm. Our chef was energetic and engaging. The server was friendly and knowledgeable. The food was tasty and served in a timely manner. The prices were reasonable. We went for a birthday celebration. It was made special by a picture being taken to commemorate the evening.
We felt a bit like cattle, as they moved us through very quickly. It was a bit difficult to get refills, and had to ask three times for salad dressing, which never appeared. Our menu selection was suppose to include dessert; unfortunately, they wanted us out of there so quickly, we were given a check and it was clear dessert was not an option.
They front check in should be more organized with seating wait time. Why make a reservation and have to wait 30-60 mins after your reserve time. It's just becoming annoying every time it's the same thing at this location and we have been to plenty up and down east and west coasts. I usually don't give reviews but I had to this time.....
We arrived at 6:40 for a 6:45 reservation and were told our table was being cleared. We weren't seated until 7:20 - over a 30min wait when we made a reservation in advance. Worst part is, if they were honest about the wait my 7 person party would've went to the bar for a drink. The food was very good, the chef is always fun but the staff certainly seemed overwhelmed as drink orders were incorrect and took extremely long.
We were seated 40 minutes after a 6:15pm Sat night reservation for my wife's birthday. Food was good as was hibachi chef. My wife found a fly in her salad, my white rice did not come out until I asked for it after the meal had been served, and pre-desserts did not arrive until requested. Manager approached to ask how things were, so we mentioned the fly in the salad and the wait time. He shrugged off the wait time explaining that it was a Saturday night, the implication being that we should not have expected an OpenTable reservation to be firm during a busy time. He seemed upset about the fly. After we paid the full bill, he came to apologize about the fly and handed us a $20 voucher toward a future entrée at the restaurant. He explained that there are NO FLIES at his restaurant, that the person whose job it was to chop the salad dropped the ball, and that he would be contacting the salad distributor to complain about the fly. We appreciated the gesture but felt that a consideration could have been made to our bill before paying. We were disappointed in his defensive posture - in our minds, a fly in salad is not entirely uncommon and we hoped the employee responsible for chopping the salad was not punished. We were frankly more upset about there being no acknowledgement that it was a problem for us to wait 40 minutes to make good on our reservations. Otherwise, the food was good, the hibachi chef was good, and the service was - other than the few things I mentioned - also good. It's loud, but this Benihana is always loud. I would still recommend to friends.
