Benihana - Santa Monica Ratings and Reviews
Horrible service and low quality food for the price paid. We were celebrating my daughter's birthday. We had a 6:30 reservation and were seated right away. However we didn't get our drinks till 7:00 pm and the chef didn't begin to cook till 7:45. It is traditional that when celebrating a birthday (especially for a litter girl turning 8) at Benihana, the restaurant would have at least 2 waiters sing the happy birthday song and take photo during the performance. We had one waiter singing and we asked him after the bill was paid if we could have a picture, to which he answered "do you want one?" I have been a customer of Benihana for 20 years and after this last experience, I can assure you that anyone I know will not return.
Was disappointed that we had to wait over a half hour after arriving promptly for our reservation. The overall cleanliness of the place was also disappointing. Having eaten at other branches of the chain, this was not one I would hurry back to. The food was as it should be and the chef was entertaining, but overall the experience left something to be desired.
It's never my intention to say bad things about a restaurant. I actually hope they get better. I picked this place mainly to entertain the kids in the group. The steak and shrimp are pretty good. The food quality was not the problem. The service was. I think this is a mismanaged place. We waited for about 15 minutes to get seated even though the restaurant was almost empty at 5pm. No explanation was given. After that was the long waiting. The waitress was either not capable or had something else on her mind. It took her 10 min to come to table to order drinks and another 10 min to serve the drinks. Then another 10 min to get the first salad (It's hibachi, you don't need to even prepared the salad. you just fill the bowl and come out, right?) The other party at our table called the manager to complain as I also got very impatient. The manager came to speed things up even though I didn't think he actually realized what the problem was. He might think he had a bunch of picky customers. He did give us a discount. But this was not the point at all. The chef rushed out to prepare the food. And maybe due to that, he was not ready. He didn't communicate to the guests like all the hibachi chefs do, other than a few "is it ok?" I haven't been to benihana for years. But another guest at our table said he is a regular and never had things like this. I did notice that the waitress next table was warm and quick. The chef there did everything to entertain. So I believe it's the restaurant's fault that not able to set a service standard for all employees. At the end, sure enough, the waitress gave the bills to wrong party and also put our drink on the other party's bill as well. Very disappointed.
There was a party of people who were shaking there table and yelling the entire time I was there almost 2 hours and the server was with them so I guess interacting with customers on that table a plus but the other 30 has to suffer but food was better than I thought and my server was very nice no real complaints just small and not very me so I’ll stick to Torrance location next time but love the restaurant as a whole
I was a little disappointed in the service. My reservation was for 7 pm but wasn't seated until 30 minutes later. The chef at our table was a neophyte, lack experience, was shy, and had little skill to be a Benehana chef. The food was okay since it was prepared one item at a time. Needs to improve.
Normally my family enjoys Benihanas - Santa Monica. We've been coming to this location since they moved from Marina Del Rey. However, on New Year's Eve, it was not as enjoyable an experience as we are used to at this restaurant. First, they were running about an hour behind on their reservations because management had decided to accommodate one family that had made 5 separate reservations for 8 people for a very early dinner, thereby really making it one reservation for 40 people and this over-taxed the seating/staff at the restaurant for the rest of the evening...pushing all their other patrons' reservations back between 45 minutes to an hour for the rest of the evening. This is information that I received from the host after I had to make several inquiries (along with many other patrons) about when we would be seated for the evening. Second, this appeared to be the first day of work for our chef. Right out of the gate, the cooking fork went flying when he did the standard greeting of flipping utensils and he was unable to flip the shrimp into his chef's hat. He didn't even try anything fancy...just the basics and he was unable to execute even those items. He also was S-U-P-E-R S-L-O-W cooking all the food so you were not able to enjoy the entire meal together. You had to eat whatever you were able to find on your plate and finish it before getting anything else cooked...otherwise your entire meal would have been cold if you had tried to wait. I've been going to Benihanas for about 30 years and this is clearly the mark of either a brand new chef or one that is inept in his job. Nice enough guy but not the chef you want to have on New Year's Eve...especially on such a lively and busy night. I don't know why Benihanas would have someone clearly so new to the job to work a busy holiday dinner....it doesn't seem fair to either the patron or the chef. Overall, it wasn't our best experience on such an auspicious occasion.
We have, belive it or not, coming to Benihana for 40 years for my son's birthday. Now we come with his kids and others in our family. Slowly the service has gotten worse and it has become more of a tourist trap and a table-churning operation. Gone are the Benihana hats for the kids (and they miss them) and the family photos after the meal and the Japanese cooks (now more Hispanic). Reservations are never ready on time. It is a disappointment and all in our party of ten (especially the kids) agree.
The chef was absolutely great! Our food was fully seasoned and cooked to perfection. However, our server was extremely slow. We sat for 23 minutes until she brought water for the table. Also, all three parties were ready to leave but we had to ask for our bill. Our server disappeared! All said and done the manager provided due diligence and gave each party a percentage off of our bills.
Very disappointed with the service during my most recent trip to Benihana Santa Monica. We were seated half an hour after our reservation time and then it took 20 more minutes for a server to come take our drink order. After she took our drink and food order, she never came back to check on us or refill drinks. The server then left dirty dishes from another table at our table for 10 minutes. When we asked to speak to the manager, he was rude and unhelpful. I will not return to this Benihana location.
I love Benihana. It used to be for special occasions when I was living in LA in the 90s.
I was spending year end holidays and with my spouse. Wanted to check out Benihana and go down memory lane. The place has gotten more casual and long queues. The food and service as great as before. Warm and friendly and lots of fun. Thank you for a great night. Will definitely drop by again when we go to LA.
I could not believe how many people were there for Christmas. We all were thinking that we did not want to cook and also wanted to have fun with our families. Beni Hana's never disappoints. The servers did the best they could with so many people in the restaurant. This could be our family tradition from now on.
My son and I decided to do something different this Christmas. We had an intimate, warm, and amazing time at Benihana Santa Monica. We really like this location. We were seated with a nice family who were welcoming and inactive. We all engaged in festive conversation and it didn’t feel like we we a separate party. Our chef was amazing and the food was delish as usual. I look forward to my next dining experience. Oh and parking was only $5.00 for theee hours.
Benihana was almost everything I expect having been there on previous occasions. Although my hibachi steak seemed slightly tough, the food was generally very good and our chef was entertaining. My biggest complaint on this particular occasion was the wait. We had reservations but it took nearly an hour before we were seated. I would have been okay with this except for the fact that I had to be somewhere at a very specific time after dinner, so my wife and I had to rush through dinner, skipping dessert, and were forced to leave our group early. It would have been a more pleasant evening without the anxiety.
I am so use to the Benihana on LaBrea that I was so disappointed with the Santa Monica restaurant. The hostess, although friendly, was not very professional. We could hardly hear our wait person because it was so loud in the restaurant. I felt I was placed in a pit amongst everyone. I just didn't realize it was sooooooo casual and noisy. Food was good however.
Went on Xmas eve. It was packed and they obviously did not plan out their reservations well. We had a reservation for 6:15 and weren't seated until almost 7. They had a ton of people in the same situation all packed in the little foyer in front. The tables are really packed tight together. The chef and waitress were great, but overall not the great experience I was looking for.
We went to the Encino location the past 2 Xmas eves and had a much better experience. We'll be going back to Encino from now on.
Even with a reservation, wait time was 45 minutes. Not okay if you ask me. Not much good experience with this chain of restaurants a few weeks back made a reservation and because of 4 minutes late wasn't seated. Arrived 30 minutes early and still waited 45 minutes to be seated. What's the point of reservations?
