Benihana - Santa Monica Ratings and Reviews
Celebrated my love’s 33rd Birthday and we had a wonderful time. The food and drinks were so good we actually finished EVERYTHING! Our chef was incredible, accommodating and had a fantastic sense of humor. We loved every second of it. Perfect place to celebrate a birthday and enjoy both a show and a delicious feast! My only complaint is that I really wanted a professional Benihana picture to give him as part of his birthday gift but we were told the camera couldn’t be found, it was lost. So we didn’t get our framed Benihana photo, which I was really looking forward to. Other than that everything and everyone was fantastic!
TERRIBLE. Wait was 30 minutes to be seated WITH A RESERVATION, another 30 minutes until we got our food. The food was terrible, noodles were sweet and gross not the traditional hibachi noodles. The setting felt like an arcade and the overall food was the worst Hibachi I have ever eaten. Extremely overpriced. NEVER GO HERE YOUR DREAMS WILL BE CRUSHED.
It was my birthday and 37th wedding anniversary. This was our 1st time going to benihana and there was issue of our seating. Somehow it was marked that we were seated but we in it ended up waiting for over an hour and a half to be seated . Maybe this was just not a good location very busy and inability to keep reservations straight. Maybe we would have wslked in we would have been seated sooner.
Absolutely unbelievable service. Our waiter and chef seemed to be the hardest working ppl in the store but everyone was essentially taking a nap. We were seated an hour late for our reservation and then no one showed up at our table for another 30 min. Never going back.
we got to Benihana at 740 for a 745 reservation. We were told it should be about 20 minutes as they were still seating reservations from 630. We watched several people who had 7pm reservations leave, very upset as they had waited almost an hour. We waited 40 minutes and we were still no where close to being sat. They offered us to leave the waiting area and told us we could go buy appetizers and drinks at the bar. If an actually proper managed restaurant, they would be offering them to us for the inconvenience of their inability to properly manage their reservations. Needless to say at 825 we left and walked to another restaurant. As the people before us who left, and were asked by the hostess why they were leaving, we have been waiting an hour, and there are plenty of other places to eat for the people who actually live in Santa Monica, or who come out here often to eat. Ruined a birthday!
DO NOT go to Benihana Santa monica if you have any sort of choice. This place was smokey, ridiculously crowded, understaffed, and one of my worst dining experiences. We had a 7pm reservation, and the hostess told us to go to the bar because they were backed up, giving us a 20 min approximation. We went to the bar, only to wait up there for an hour without being called!!! And we were not the only ones! At least a dozen groups were waiting for their reservation times for up to 2 hours (one group was forgotten at the bar and was there for 2 hours). We ended up leaving, walking a couple blocks to a sushi place in which we could actually breath clean air. If you want kid-crazy, smokey, poor service, this is the restaurant for you.
Always fun to take first timers. Only problem is that if you go right at lunch, it may be really busy so it might take a bit longer for your chef to cook your food. Very understandable but just wanted to give future guests a heads up. the staff is very friendly and servers are very prompt!!
First time at this location. My visits to other locations were average, but tonight I had the best experience. This location is a lot bigger than the Encino, which I prefer cause its more roomy. The staff are super friendly and our chef Sergio was the best.
- great place to celebrate birthdays, bring a date, or bring your family (your kids will enjoy it the most!)
-Make reservations so that you don't have to wait.
- Ask for Sergio as your chef because he puts on a great show and grilled the food the best I've ever had it. He did alot of tricks and things I've never seen other chefs do. He did a Mickey mouse, Pacman, broken heart, laser show, and more! He even allowed me to participate in his show by throwing a lemon in the air and having me catch it with the cooking fork.
- Order something that is made on the grill in front of you, so you can watch the chef cook it
Food: I always get something cooked on the grill that's either a 5 or 6 course meal. I usually get the Splash & Meadow 6 course meal (hibachi steak and colassol shrimp), which is about $31.
- Onion soup: I always look forward this. It has mushrooms and scallions.
- Salad: the ginger dressing is so tasty!
- veggies: zucchini, mushrooms, and onions we're outstanding especially with the dipping sauces.
- steak & shrimp: cooked the best I had it. The flavors were just right. Sergio knew how to cook!!
Price: may seem pricey, but I think the prices are fair when it comes to the 5 or 6 course meals. The cost is about $20-50 depending on what you get (obviously lobster and filet mignon will cost you more). You get a lot of variety for what you're paying for because it comes with hot tea, onion soup, salad, veggies, shrimp, rice (upgrade to chicken fried rice for $4.10 more), and ice cream. And you're getting a fun show! I always end up with leftovers, which becomes lunch the next day.
Haven't been to Benihana in many years; glad to see it hasn't changed a bit. Food's still high quality for a reasonable price. Only disappointment - our chef had no showmanship, prepared the meal like he worked for any other restaurant, whereas the chef at the next table put on a great performance. Was disappointing because that's part of the reason one goes to Benihana. Glad we were sitting close enough so we didn't completely miss the show.
Benihana has been a tradition for birthdays in our family for awhile. For years we went to the Beverly Hills location. Santa Monica ambiance isn't as warm, feels more industrial. Food was good, although our shrimp was a little overcooked and grainy. Our hostess/waitress was very attentive and our chef put on a good show. We will be going back!!
Enjoyed the evening with great company at our table. Our chef was amazing and we had very cool times. These guys work hard to entertain there guest - had no problem leaving 30% tip. Loved the environment. And we thought the birthday photo was an awesome touch to wrap the evening up!
We were 8 people, including 4 kids there for a birthday. The service staff were all pleasant and accommodating. One of the kids had some eating allergies. The server worked with her to get a meal she could enjoy.
The hibachi chef was also great. Funny, playful with the kids, and the food was perfect.
Lastly, we had brought a cake which the server helped us with. All in all, a wonderful experience.
I went to Benihana today and had the worst experience the service was horrible and disorganized. People without reservations were seated before people with reservations. I tried multiple times to speak with the employees and manager, but was met with no support or help. Honestly would have been better off leaving and eating else where. After telling the manager that I was going to leave due to the HORRIBLE experience and RIDICULOUS wait times she appeared to be annoyed and passive rather than apologetic and understanding. I am unbelievably shocked by the management and rudeness of the staff. Defiantly will think twice before coming back again based on the service.
The place was packed and I waited with my date for 30 minutes and they couldn't seat us. We left to go somewhere else. It would of been OK if they just would of told me that there was such a long wait, but they kept saying it would only be a few minutes more.
Reservations for 8:15 PM. Arrived at 8:05 PM. Seated at 8:50 PM. Server was not happy or entertaining. For a Benihana experience, I would expect interaction with the customers. None! No tricks. Nothing. Cooked food and left. This was a birthday celebration and unfortunately, the Benihana experience was not celebratory.
I've always liked this restaurant. This time it was so disappointing that we weren't informed of the parking problem: parking lot is under construction, no elevator service. My husband and I have knee issues and cannot use stairs. Had to use the ramps which was a LONG trek! We should have been warned.
Food was good as usual.
We went to spend a wonderful birthday evening at Benihana and was left very disappointed by our whole experience! Our waitress knew nothing about their signature cocktails and she was no where to be found after we ordered our first round and our food. She got 2 out of the three drinks wrong and took about 15 minuets to fix the mistake. While we were waiting I went to the restroom and it was FILTHY!!! Water all over the floor, sinks covered in soap, trash can over flowing with paper towels and toilet paper all over the floor of the stalls. I went to inform the hostess that it looked like it needed some attention and she said "uhhh ok?..." along with the look of death... I honestly can't fathom why this girl has a job in the customer service industry? With this being a multi unit franchise, I know that there are systems in place like a restroom checklist. Shouldn't they be using it? Very rude and off putting along with knowing that their restrooms are unsanitary. When it came to paying the Bill they would not except the "birthday coupon" because the link wasnt on the physical sheet even though we showed them the email on our phone. Absolutely no sympathy after we had just spent over $200 at their establishment. My family and friends will never go back to this place! All we wanted was to enjoy my Mothers birthday, unfortunately it was incredibly disappointing.
As soon as I got there I was "cut" in line by another customer, with no admonishment from staff to the offender; I was also seated next to very loud children throwing food....... I like Benihana, but not that much to endure the atmosphere and being cut in line for service. I also had a reservation, but that did not allow me to not exercise common courtesy
