Benihana - Newport Beach Ratings and Reviews
Rushed experience. The Chef was amazing! But our server was terrible! Didn’t even offer us a fork! Forced us to use chopsticks just because we were Asian?!? On top of that one of our brown rice bowls had hair in it! No bag offered to go, no sauces to go. Just a horrible experience. Not going to go here anymore. During the middle of our meal he brought boxes before we even had 5 bites in...Wanted to kick us out every chance he got. Ice cream was pretty bad as well. Why offer a time available at 9:45 if you are going to treat your customers like this? Cut off at 6 or 7 if you are going to rush us like this. We had to constantly ask for items the server forgot...
We went for my husband's birthday with our kids and parents. Our server (Alex) and chef (Chris) were excellent. Very personable and lively. Made out experience very fun! Kids loved it and we enjoyed watching them experience Benihana for the first time. Food was excellent as well. I had Benihana Delight which is filet mignon and jumbo prawns and the filet was cooked perfectly. So flavorful. They were also very celebratory and gracious of my husband's special occasion. We had a great evening.
Been to many Benihana’s around North America. New York, Las Vegas...upbeat ambience, friendly, talkative diners, a true communal experience. It’s odd...this is our “home” Benihana and people just aren’t friendly! No one talks with their table mates. Maybe it’s because no one is a tourist, like at the two locations above, or in San Diego, Orlando.
We chose to dine here because our grandchildren were visiting from Portland Oregon and truly enjoy the food and experience every time. It was convenient to the John Wayne Airport and they were flying out after dinner. After three days at Disneyland, it turned out to be a fun send off experience!!!!
I had a $30 off ($30 off when you buy 1 regular meal) certificate for my Birthday.
I took my friend and used $30 certificate and split the overage. We each had "Treasure of the Sea" from Teppan Menu. It was excellent. We come here for our birthdays every year.
The ambiance was nice, I went to celebrate my birthday. The down side was that the server was not very attentive. We ordered a kids meal and they did not get the rice, when I asked about it the cook said it is only available if you request it. When on the menu it said the kids meal came with rice.
I always enjoy an evening at Benihana's even though it isn't the highest quality food in the world. Prices are fairly stiff for what you get. The ordinary steak dinner isn't super tender but isn't tough either. Most of the teppan we got this time was overdone - the chef just didn't do things very quickly and the food spent extra time on the grill. items on the online menu were conspicuously missing from the one we ordered from (e.g., Garden Vegetables). The wording on the birthday discount certificate was so complex (purchase one teppan get $30 additional items) that when I asked the server which items qualified as the first teppan item) he looked at me blankly and reinterpreted the deal to mean "order two teppan items get $30 off". So we both had teppan instead of one teppan and sushi as originally planned.
We shared a table with another group, the cooked started serving their group first. By the time he came around our group we were limited to the amount of veggies . When we asked why we were served so little compared to the other group he stated it was only a certain amount per person. Ok? we all should be served the same amount right? He pretty much ignored us. We spoke to the manager and all they can do was give ya a free appetizer coupon for next Time. I won’t be coming here next time!
Celebrated a couple of birthdays so we used the Chef's Table coupon. Great value and recommend everyone sign up. The chef wasn't as entertaining as others...seemed new? Also goofed a little on our order even though he followed procedure and verified everyone's order before starting. He was nice though. Server was great. We were seated quickly and got our drinks, appetizers and dessert in a timely fashion.
I'm been going here for over 20 years, my cook who was Derick was so noxious, loud, the saying insulting things but the other two couples at the table we're going along with him, everything out of his mouth was hey bro hey bro I think it's going to be the last time I will ever go if this is what it's come down to their servers aren't Benihana servers anymore. They're just training anybody that comes off the streets and to me it's losing its whole value because of it!
My 26 year old son was appalled about what was coming out of his mouth in front of me. We go there for a special night like a date night between the two of us we spent about $130 to have set such offensive Behavior.
Benihana always delivers for a fun, celebratory meal. The food is consistently good and there is plenty of choice on the menu. The restaurant is kid-friendly too. We had a baby and three year old in our party. There is a great kids menu and it is entertaining for them. We might just have to make this an annual birthday spot!
The food was terrific as usual but for the 1st time we had a terrible experience with the employee that seated our party of 4. We've NEVER been told where to sit at the table but on this visit, an over zealous employee told us which seats to take. When we approached the table, a couple was already seated on one end. Since there were 4 in our group, we began sitting on the opposite end so the 4 of us could see each other and interact. This is how our group always sits and no one has ever told us how or where to sit! He told us we must sit in the middle BECAUSE we were a party of 4. We said no, we were specifically sitting on the end because we were a party of 4. This idiot argued with us. We asked why he insisted we sit this way, he said because that's how it is!? Because we kept insisting there was no good, logical reason why we should sit in the middle, disallowing us to talk to each other (because we would be in a row vs at the corner) we sat where we wanted but he was angry, unprofessional and ridiculous and snapped "do what you want" as he walked away.
The chicken fried rice over price if our meals came with stream rice but over price for a separate chicken bowl of fried rice if we choose chicken rice. It's not enough chicken inside and too much soy sauce. Over all the food okay and over price.
The chef of our table was super boring and the air fan were not strong and were too much smell smoke cause our table there 4 customers started coughing. That's why we drank too much water.
The plates were white and it was not traditional Japanese style. Before it was brown and nice pattern.
There were no green tea servicing after dinner.
It was birthday celebration and no picture taken memory.
There were couple customers over weight and we feel cramping in the seating area. Not comfortable.
Happy hours should extended til 7:30 p.m. instead 7:00 p.m.
Few of my coworkers said it costs too much and over priced. They were not impress plus no photo taking for birthday celebration.
The $30.00 coupon not cover a free birthday meal.
Chef Andres was the best, food was amazing, place was clean and good noise level. waitress was ok, I don’t know why but lately I have notice that most waitresses are just there to provide an ok service but not great customer service anymore, maybe we as clients got them use to receive a 15-25%tip no matter the service and attitude they give.
I have been to this and other Benihana's in the past. The food is always excellent. On this particular visit I was not totally pleased in that It seemed we were rushed through with our first courses. I also thought our waitress was supposed to take a picture of our party and none was offered. The restaurant was not completely full and the Manager at the front said, "We have many open tables available at this time." I had inquired about it when one of my guests was 15 minutes late for our 6:30 seating. Also I was disappointed when we ordered drinks in the bar during "Happy Hour" and were charged full price for our drinks! I'm sure this particular visit will not preclude us from coming again.
We have been to this location many times. This was the first time we went when the plates that were waiting for us were sticky and stained. Then our waiter was so rude. Everything we asked for he said no we can’t do that. Then the chef came with total attitude. My parents were here from out of town. We took them for their anniversary and we were embarrassed by how rude all our servers were. If you spend $300 on dinner you hope people will at least be nice
WE CAME 15 MN EARLIER BUT WERE SERVED IMMEDIATELY : 5 STARS! :)
CHEF WAS FUN, FRIENDLY AND DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB, :)
FOODS WAS GOOD LIKE EVERY TIME :)
GOOD QUIET AMBIANCE FOR ONCE : LUCKY US :)
BEFORE LEAVING WE ASKED FOR A REFILL OF TEA, WAITRESS SAID "OF COURSE" BUT
DID NOT RETURN....... :( FORGOT US? THAT WAS NOT A BIG PROBLEM BUT IT SHOULD
NOT HAPPEN IN A RESTAURANT WITH 22% TIP PRINT OUT! :(
WE STILL WILL RETURN IN THE FUTURE.....
Older fellow working front reception area wasn't too courteous.. They have two podiums and I stood at one in front of female hostess holding my 9 month old, he wanted me to walk around a few people to go to him when I was already in front of the hostess. We had a reservation for 4 people. I did not count the baby because he's fussy and we usually hold him. He went on to educate me that my boy is a person and should be counted. Then had us sit down and seated a number of others that came in after. If it wasn't my wifes birthday and her desire to remain, I would not have eaten at this restaurant. Life is hard enough, especially with three kids to have to deal with snootiness especially from someone that is the first line of customer service at a restaurant. Could he be right? Sure, I bet he hates having to deal with kids and that babies should be counted, even though they put us in a corner and gave us a high chair not taking up any teppan real estate. But, bummer experience from an otherwise enjoyable venue.
30 minutes past our reservation time is far too long a wait in order to be seated. Had we been more than 15 minutes late our reservation would have been cancelled and given to waiting guests with no reservation. The restaurant needs to learn to manage scheduling better. The restroom (women) was very, very clean - that was about the highlight of the evening. We didn't get a picture at the end of the night like we do in Ontario and Honolulu. We had a rather perfunctory chef (who may have been just trying to hurry up and get the food going because we were all starved and tired of waiting. The servers were frazzled and kept reaching in front of me to clear things (I know its there job) but it was just too much of a wait, a chef that wasn't that friendly, frazzled servers and great food.... Every time I come to the NB Benihana I have a less than great experience. If not for my son living in Irvine I doubt I would ever come back to this location. The manager was super nice and kept apologizing. I felt bad for him. He offered a complimentary card for a free appetizer or desert and he brought edamame to the table for free. Something is wrong at this location as they are TRYING but its falling significantly short.
