Benihana - New York Ratings and Reviews
We read about happy hour online and went in expecting it but was told there is no bar right now so there is no happy hour. The person that took the orders gave us about 30 seconds with the menu so we just picked a hibachi. He said "with fried rice?" Everyone at the table expected the rice to be included. But no they just want you to think that it's included but it's $4.50.
While we were late for our scheduled reservation, since gathering everyone to drive in from Lumberton, NJ turned out to be a greater task than we had anticipated, the BENIHANA team allowed us to wait for the next possible opening. Well, as I have shared with everyone, at the end of the day it was truly worthy of the long wait. I believed that they gave us a special room whether it was on account of our Birthday celebration or not, it was quite touching.
We choose benihana for consistently delicious food, but on our last visit, the food was plain bad, the chef was not good that day and the whole group was disappointed - from the salad to all proteins, they all had little to no taste. For the first time we didn't even come close to finishing the meal.
They overbooked. Even after we called and confirmed and told them we had to go to a show, the wait was over 45 minutes. The staff was incompetent and unable to make up for their mistake. It was my sons last night home and a special occasion. He speaks Japanese and we thought Benihana would be a good choice. We were wrong and had to walk out after 25 minutes.
The wait to get in was ridiculous. We had a 6:15 reservation, and waited almost an hour to be seated. There were SO many people waiting, and no seats. I don’t know if it’s always like this, or if something happened, but they were very apologetic about it. They even brought appetizers around for free. We appreciated that because our young daughter was getting very hungry. Otherwise, the food is great! I appreciate getting my meal gluten free. I wish they offered ANY gluten free salad dressing though. I’m not excited about eating dry lettuce... we always enjoy the show!
The food was delish as always, BUT, it took 45 minutes for our chef to start cooking, by that time he started, we were not into being entertained, we just wanted our food! Also, the seating space is too cramped! maybe the tables should sit 8 people instead of 9.
I was looking for a reasonably priced restaurant for a group to meet a friend who works in the area. This was the perfect spot and one I frequented often during my years of residing in the Big Apple. Don't let the security dissuade you for this minor inconvenience is worth the meal. The service is amazing and since there is community seating, our dining companions proved to be interesting, fun, and engaging.
We waited for our table for 45 minutes. When we finally sat, we waited another half hour for our order to be taken. Then waited 15 more minutes for the chef. We made a reservation well in advance. The manager was not at all accommodating. The service was terrible. Our family was in town and we were so excited to give them this experience. We had a horrible time and we all left beyond disappointed.
I went for my birthday and had a great time with the exception of the people at the table. Server was awesome and cook was awesome. Food did not disappoint! However I could have gone without the other customers calling the server all types of names in another language. The server was nothing but polite and did a great job.
The restaurant had 2 hibachi chefs for the entire upstairs, the stoves in the back were broken so the soup was cold, and they were out of rice. Meanwhile, the manager was very reluctant to offer anything to make the meal more enjoyable. We watched people leave from all of the tables around us. It was not a good night for Benihana.
Had such a great time here ! This place is a perfect spot for Birthdays ! They take picture of you and your party and develop them on the spot for free on your birthday. Food is AMAZING, you will be stuffed after leaving here worth the prices. Happy i went there!
Great place to bring kids. Took my daughter out for a special lunch and she loves the chefs tricks. The food is very good and reasonably priced given the entertainment. Overall a great place to have lunch if you are doing a special day in the city. They have a kids menu also with affordable lunch specials. If you have never been or are with someone who has never been it is definitely worth it. Otherwise, the repertoire of tricks and jokes stays the same so you may not need to see it twice...
