Benihana - New York Ratings and Reviews
I usually love Benihana. I booked a table for a birthday party and had 10 boys with me. When we showed up they told me that they were running 30 minutes behind. I had to text and email all the parents to change the pick up time. Then i had to wait outside in the cold with 10 boys for a half hour.
This Benihana needs a serious renovation. I felt like it was 1995. You could tell it was glamorous and high-end back in the day, but now everything looks old and run down. Stained carpeting, dingy downstairs bar. The bartender found moldy strawberries she had to throw away...not a good start to our night. The lighting wasn't great on either floor. And the tables looked very out dated. Another person at our table changed his mind about wanting fried rice (he originally said white) and the server gave him attitude. "oh, now you want the fried rice." He then looked at our chef cooking and rolled his eyes. Very rude, that is now how a server should treat a guest. The experience was fun, but this location needs to redecorate asap.
The restaurant was so packed the wait for those of us with reservations was at least 30 min past our reserved time. Whe. You reserve for a full table for a teens bday, that bichbtime standing in. Packed bar/lobbybarea is stressful. Our server/bus person was rarely to be found and used dishes from the first course had to be stacked up and practically cleared on or own, we had to literally track down water refills etc. very disappointing since we are there to celebrate a special occasion, and it wasn’t no like this the last time we weee here which admittedly was a few years ago.
We love Benihana and have been going there for years. However, their ability to honor reservation times has always been poor and is getting even worse. On this occasion, we had to wait 55 minutes for our table *with* a reservation. The restaurant was jam-packed and it was obvious they had hopelessly overbooked for the evening. It's inexcusable for a restaurant that has been open for this long to have such a dysfunctional system. They obviously have plenty of data to accurately estimate meal times, yet they just don't seem to care.
Why did I even waste a bday celebration here. The worst service and unprofessional front staff (specifically the second host upstairs). Don't cuss out other coworkers about how they organize their Menus in front of your dining guests. Wait until no one can hear you. You're just being straight petty.
This restaurant needs to hire a busser to clear tables if other servers/staff (that are just standing around) don't want to help their fellow coworkers out. Being served dessert while plates of food from the main meal is scattered on the table doesn't seem too appealing or professional. The moment my group and a random couple sat at our grill table at the beginning, we instantly noticed how dirty our plates were. Then when I got served my utensil there was visible food stuck on it. It took forever to get drinks, main food, and by dessert I didn't even want it. I just wanted to get out of there. Once we got the check we quickly gave him our cards bc we weren't sure if it would take another half hour to get his attention. My friends recommended coming here because they had a great experience in Las Vegas, I figured since this is NYC, the standards would be similar. This place is like a local buffet with old dirty carpet, numerous tables bunched together with terrible service and ambiance (what's up with the random terrible loud club music?).
The atmosphere was rather loud. At no fault to the restaurant, we were placed with a rather obnoxious group of individuals at our table which make the overall ambiance a bit hard to enjoy. The food was delicious! Our server did disappear for about 25 minutes after our meal when we were waiting for our check
We made a 7:30 reservation and did not get seated until 8:30. The host was never honest with us and kept telling me that we were next and just a few more minutes. The last straw was when a group with an 8:45 reservation got seated before us. I spoke to the mgr and he said that because of Open Table they get overbooked and were trying g to fix the problem. Really disappointing.
I made a reservation for my son and his date. They showed up on time, checked in and were given a beeper to let them know when their table would be ready. After 30 minutes of waiting my son went up and asked when their table would be ready and they said that they gave their table away because they did not answer the page. Their beeper never went off and the restaurant refused to seat them. NOT NICE.
And to boot, I received an Open Table credit for dining that evening. HA, HA.
I actually really love Benihana. But some reason, the chef I had didn't season the food well at all. Our food was VERY BLAND. All he used was butter and garlic. The dishes was also OVERPRICED for the small amount of food we received. The manager that night, tall African American man had a VERY NASTY ATTITUDE. The way he spoke to the waitresses and staff was DISGUSTING! I definitely would consider going back in a couple of years. No time soon tho.
