Benihana - Mall of America Ratings and Reviews
We arrived 20 minutes early for our reservation (7:00) and were seated 20 minutes late, even after a group with a 7:30 reservation was seated before us. It took a long time for a server to come after we had been seated. This is not an inexpensive dinner to go out for - I feel the service and seating time should have been more prompt and attentive.
The was good not great, the fried rice lacked flavor and the veggies were all cooked separately which was slow and made them cold... The Teriyaki chicken was excellent... We were suppose to get hot tea and ice cream with our meal and that was never offered... For the premium price over Osaka it was a let down and next time I will learn toward Oskaka.
Front counter was curt and non-helpful. When we made reservations, there was no mention you were REQUIRED to have the full experience instead of an express option. We checked in 30 minutes early and were told an express table would be a 30-45 minute wait. When we came back was when we were informed about the required seating due to reservations.
The service staff seemed to be distracted instead of being greeting and informative. This continued throughout the meal when it seemed to be a chore for him to tend to the beverages at the table. Billing was also handled poorly when he overcharged us for the meeting. While he caught it - a further delay ensued.
The chef was inexperienced which was not unexpected for lunch.
Overall, a failure by the front desk & the wait staff was not offset by the chef.
Chef was amazing, talented and very charming! Server and host had no customer service. Very rude and had no desire to serve our needs. Even said if we don't decide what we want, literally less than 5 min of being seated, we will be asked to leave and we had never seen their menu before. Our bills were mixed up with others at our table and they double charged one of out guests. Management better but offered no immediate resolution and only took out name and number for later resolution. It's been 3 days and we have heard nothing yet. I will NEVER return to this location.
Less than memorable experience
Previous visits to the MOA have been very good -- enjoyable even. This visit was the exception, and hopefully the only one. My wife and I basically visit twice a year with our birthday certificates. It is a nice and unique dating experience.
Our server was less than energetic, though fairly attentive during the meal. The chef 'played the part' but was not truly engaging. Maybe it was just an "off night." We have come to expect so much more personality, energy, and enthusiasm. I would call it 'lackluster.'
At the end of the meal, we were presented with a bill that was not our own. It had a kiddie lemonade -- the selection of the couple with the infant. So I simply exchanged bills, thinking that a simple mix up happened. But that bill was also not right. We sent it back with the server for correction. When she returned, after more than 5 minutes, the bill had the correct meal, but no deduction for the certificate. At that point we were told that our bill required "management approval." This has never been the case in the past. By this point everyone at our table had left and a bus person was cleaning up and setting up for the next group of customers. I am not sure how long we waited for the 'manager approval' -- too long. When she returned with the corrected tab there was no sincere apology, just excuses.
We will be back. We have enjoyed your service in the past. But this experience tarnished what should have been a joyous and stressless birthday celebration.
We were seated promptly.
The chef was (probably) new as there was another watching over him regularly. There were some things missed in his setup that required additional food brought from the kitchen. Not unexpected but not top-flight as we have experienced in the past. His “show” was basic. Again not unexpected based on his experience level.
The server seemed distracted and not really checking on us as often as they should have been resulting in empty glasses too often. When it came time to settle bill, 2 of the 3 checks at the table were miss delivered. After sorting that out, 1 of the checks was wrong. After “fixing” it, it was still wrong. It took a manager to resolve whatever had been done incorrectly.
So it’s been over year since we’ve been to a Benihana‘s restaurant. We’ve always been to the Maple Grove location, this was our first time at the mall of America location. Food was awesome as always. But either things of changed or we did not get the total experience. We have a foreign exchange student from Sweden it was her 18th birthday she had never experienced anything like that before I thought we were going to get the experience we normally get at the Maple Grove location we did not. You used to have linen table class at least in Maple Grove they do not a big deal but all of the veggies were already cut up by the Teppan-Yaki share the chef was good but did not do any tricks like flipping The shrimp tails into his hat or into his pocket on his shirt there was no Flippin of knives or any spatulas or anything like that during or at the end of our meal that was kind of disappointing being I wanted our exchange student to see that stuff maybe it’s just the location I don’t know…?
The hostess was extremely rude and didn't act like she even cared . Our server who took care of our table was awesome . The cook was great and the food was good . Place is a little run down and was dirty. Not many of the employees seemed to care or seemed to preoccupied with their cell phones to take care of customers .
We brought friend here from Namibia, Africa. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the food. My only complaint would be that there was not enough waitstaff. Our waiter was overextended and we had to wait way too long for drinks, etc. We had a birthday girl with us as well and she did not get the pomp and circumstance she deserved as is usually awarded and as it was with several other patrons that evening. No song, etc.
I do not write reviews, but our experience at this Benihana was enough for me to write one.
I have dined at many Benihana's and I usually order the same meal (hibachi steak & shrimp). At every location I have had the same quality of food that has had the same flavor and taste; with the exception of this location.
Each course was disappointing. The vegetables were over cooked & burnt tasting. The steak was very dry and had no taste (unlike what a hibachi steak should). Even the steamed rice was mushy, not like steamed rice should be.
I normally eat my entire meal... I only ate a quarter of this one.
We had made a reservation for our son's birthdays for 8pm on Saturday by the time we actual got to our seat it was 9pm. We then didn't get any drinks or service for another 20 minutes. There were food chunks on our silverware and lipstick on wine glasses. I will say the cook was good and the food was good but we will not go back again.
