Benihana - Key West Ratings and Reviews
This location is only open for dinner. We were celebrating a birthday and presented the waiter with a birthday certificate when we were seated. Could not use certificate if both of us were ordering from sushi menu, so one of us had to order a "cooked"dinner even though we didn't want that and we always order lots of sushi so we would have spent even more on sushi than a cooked dinner. Waiters used to sing "happy birthday" in Japanese but not any more and they used to take your photo to commemorate the birthday but they didn't, nor did they offer a birthday desert. In fact, except for the phone call to confirm the reservation when they asked if we were celebrating a birthday, nobody at the restaurant even mentioned a birthday even though they new we had a birthday certificate and after our meal, when the waiter brought us our check, he handed the certificate back to me saying "don't forget this on the table". We had to remind him that we wanted to use it because one of us had a birthday today, even though we had had this conversation when we first sat down and he had to keep checking with the manager as to what we had to order to be able to use the certificate. The manager said no matter how much sushi/sashimi we ordered, we wouldn't be able to use the certificate unless we ordered a "hibachi" meal too. And even though the "hibachi" dinner included a desert, we were charged for the one desert we ordered. The food was good but we left feeling a little let down and disappointed because the ordering process was such a struggle in order to use the certificate and we didn't order all the sushi we wanted because the manager said we had to order the hibachi meal too and we didn't feel like we had celebrated a birthday at all. This used to be a fun place to celebrate a birthday but now not so much.
Celebrating our sons 26th birthday! Benihana has always been one of our favorite places to celebrate special occasions. The food, service and staff are just great and there's always a familiar face in the restaurant. Tonight Ted and Michael our Chef really made the night special! Thank you!
Special dinner at Benihana. Good food...lots of it. Still eating leftovers. Our chef Juan was excellent and entertaining. Was there in vacation staying next door at Hyatt. Everyone else at our table was a Key West local which was fun to be with. We both ordered chateaubriand. First time ever had that at Japanese restaurant. Cooked perfectly. Price a bit high...but still eating it. Fun. Nice touch at end...took bday pic of me, printed and gave it to us. Nice.
The smoke of cooking was coming to our faces. At the end of the dinner all our clothes were smelling very bad. The service wasn't so good. They quickly served all the food, even before we could eat what was on our plate and wanted us the leave the restaurant to get new customers.
It was probably the worst Benihana dinner we ever had.
Coming in as a couple, we were seated with another group of people in order to fill out the table. A bit uncomfortable celebrating an anniversary with people we didn't know, but that's more our fault for not having ever been to a Benihana's before.
Kudos to the chef. Food was good and his show was fun. Overall still a positive experience. Suggest going with larger group rather than an annivetsary for two though.
Our reservation is at 8:30 and we were not seated until 930. That left a pretty poor taste in her mouth considering we had a three-year-old and we had made a reservation to days prior to our arrival. Also the address on the Apple iPhone map was wrong which also made us a few minutes late and was very frustrating. I brought that to the hostesses attention and she said it's a common problem. They did call the morning of the day of our reservation to confirm. With their prior knowledge of the nap situation it would've been helpful if they would've let us know that the amount was incorrect on the Apple Maps I thought was what we were using. I did bring that up as a suggestion to the hostess for them to let people know about that. Once we were seated it took a while for our server to arrive. He seems preoccupied or maybe just not a typical server but because they were so busy suited up and started helping people. The best thing about our meal truly was our cook, Pete. He was really nice very helpful and did a great job cooking our meals, he also did his best to entertain our three-year-old and do tricks at the table Overall with an hour wait it just makes it very hard to give us an absolutely wonderful review and the lack luster service considering there are lots of options to eat in Key West and people that go to a Benihana have an expectation of a certain caliber of service with the cost of the meal and this just seem to miss the mark with the exception of our cook Pete. In my opinion nothing is worth an hour wait nothing especially if you have a reservation
Was seated 15 minutes after reservation time because we had to wait for another reservation to arrive so they could seat a full table.
Restaurant added 18% gratuity to a party of 5 even though the menu says they add it for parties of 8 or larger. I only mind because we weren't told about it. Just noticed it on our bill. Ended up being a loss to the server because I always tip at least 20%
Initially I wasn't impressed because they opened late, the hostess was unfriendly & uncommunicative. Once we got to our table though, our server & chef quickly made up for any misgivings. Our server stayed on top of our appetizers & drinks. Our chef was very friendly & went out of his way to wow the kids. Food was excellent. We'll definitely be back.
The food and service from the chef and the server was outstanding. The hostess and a man that seemed to be a manger were rude. I will go back because ultimately you are there to eat and everything was delicious. However, it would of been nice to have been greeted with a smile and not an attitude. I had a reservation and I arrived five minutes early, so there was no need to treat us like we were a burden.
Was allergic to msg and asked waitress to check and never did twice then told waitress and cook that I can't have sesame seeds on anything of which both did not listen and had to dunk my dinner in a bowl of water to get them off. Great view not so great service and food was as average as a china gate restaurant in a strip mall
We love Benihanas , always enjoy the chef cooking . The only downfall is that once the chef is done , the waiter is right there to box your food . This time around my son was still taking a bite off of his plate , and it was taken from him and placed in a box .
Brought in a large group (2 tables). 1 chef was excellent, gave a great show along with the meal, the other was lackluster at best. He just didn't put much effort into the "show" portion of the meal, just more or less cooked the food. A little knife twirling to start, but that was about it. Several of the people I invited were first timers, so their experience was jaded a little in "what's the big deal" kind of way. Knew they missed something when they began talking with the 2nd table's guests after dinner.
