Benihana - Houston - Downtown Ratings and Reviews
I had reservations for 2p on November 5th. I was seated promptly, but no one came to take my order, so I had to go back to the front and tell the hosted. We waited about 15 minutes before anyone came to take drink orders, took another 5 minutes to bring my drink. I'm disappointed at the service especially when I'm a frequent patron at benihana's
That was my first time and I had my bday party there,it was everything.I had never been to a restaurant and everyone there was so nice and they made sure that any questions that I had to ask they,we're ready to answer, now all I can think about is when are we going back to Bennihanas again, everyone loved it though and I promise we will be back soon
I have been to Benihana restaurants in the Bay Area, LA and Irvine, Monterey and beyond. However, the one in Houston was by far the most disturbing and disappointing dining experience in a very long time. We were celebrating a friend who had been visiting Houston for medical treatment, and because of past experiences I thought this would be a safe bet. It wasn’t!
The problem: the appetizers arrived after the main course was served; the food was over-cooked; the sushi/sashimi combo looked like hacked up fish... not even sliced properly; the snow-crab literally was served as the bills were being presented; the cook was the least experienced of the bunch, but all of them were not skilled at Teppanyaki cooking... they were boring at best; we were handed our bill without even being asked if we wanted dessert; the bathrooms were disgusting, and there was toilet paper all over the floor which was tracked throughout the restaurant; nobody once bothered to ask how our meal was until after I payed the bill. In summary, this meal not only left one of the people in our party feeling sick all night, but it was a reason for me to never visit ANY Benihana ever again.
I would have to rate this restaurant a low 3. I had reservations for 8:00 PM with the total guest of nine. Two groups met up for my daughter‘s birthday celebration. The first group was early and was not allowed to be seated, we where about 6 minutes late due to unforeseen traffic issue not even near downtown. When my husband dropped us at the door we were still not allowed to be seated because he was not there, he had to go park. When we all were there they indicated they did not have a table available. Hostess (who seemed sick or mad she was at work) asked us to be seated in the bar and get out of the front entry. when I went back to check why we were not seated since we had reservations the manager said “oh aren’t you the one that was late?” I just looked like I can’t believe you even said that. At 8:26 we were finally seated and then the manager became nice. Had a great Chef name Julie! Waiter lady seemed very tired or didn’t want to be there. Overall it was way too loud we couldn’t even talk and hear each other let alone the chef. I would probably never go back maybe try different location. I did see someone take a picture of my birthday girl but we never got the photo they just tried to
get us out of the restaurant.
Our Chef, Cody, was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. TERRIBLE. He said it was his first day. HE WAS AWFUL and should not have a second day. 5:15 reservation and we did not leave until 6:50. That's only because I asked for the check before the food was done because we had Rockets tickets. I cannot stress how very bad our experience here was. When you make your reservation, it's worth doing what you can to ensure you have a seasoned, experienced Chef at your table.
Our waitress would disappear for 20-30 minutes at a time, leaving our beverages empty. Our chef had to leave the grill to get bowls due to our waitress being so slow. The party a table over had a speaker that they brought with them. They turned this up to the max and were vaping in the restuarant. The management only asked them to stop vaping and said nothing about the music. Overall not a great experience.
Everything was great. Went with my cousin and aunt for my cousins birthday but I guess cause I was the odd one out they assume I wasn't paying and didn't give me as much attention as everyone else. Everyone got refills and I had to wait till my glass was empty and I was already eating the ice. Didn't get the cheery service till after they saw me grab the bill to pay
It was unbearably hot! I understand you have to sit by the grill but the air needs to be adjusted somehow. Very unhappy that we had to have two extra folks join our table. We already had a party of seven adults, celebrating 2 birthdays and an anniversary with drinks in hand on the table. They chose to to set a father and young child at the table with us making 9. The table right beside us, seated about the same time, only had 6. They could have easily sat them there. I understand their method of seating 8 to a table to get the most out of their chefs show, but 9 at those tables is way to small!! Very frustrating and took away from our celebration. Next time, I will make reservations for 8 and pay for the extra spot! Our chef and waitress were wonderful and did everything they could to accommodate.
Arrived on reservation time for a birthday dinner with my family only to find we were unable to be seated at our table for another 30 min. Normally this would not have put me out too badly. However the place was so packed with people the only waiting option we had was to stand on the street corner. It was clear that the staff was not managing their diner traffic in any way as the restaurant has that "hot & sweaty" feel due to too overcrowding. Unfortunately, we ended up leaving to try and find a place that could accommodate a family party of five at 8:00 pm on a Saturday night. Pretty much ruined the night.
I usually go on my birthday every year to Westhiemer location but decided to try downtown for 1st time. Made reservations, had to still sit for an hour. Once seated chef never came out for a while, waiter said they didn't peel enough shrimp and they were having to do so. Got dinner that ice cream and tea comes with it. Waiter comes at end said no ice cream because freezers are broken and didn't offer hot tea??? Will never go back to thus location again. .For these issues we should have at least got a discount. Worst experience at Benihana I ever had.
Because of other negative reviews, we almost canceled our reservation for 8. I am happy we decided on keeping it. After the flooding, options were limited. We were seated immediately on arrival. Our server was patient with our talkative group. The cook put on an entertaining show and the food was on par. After dinner the birthday person was given dessert and the severs sang happy birthday in English and Japanese. Afterwards the server took a group picture and gave us 2 copies. Resteraunt was not overly hot and noise was expected for a busy Saturday night.
Been several times, usually enjoy the food but space is always a premium. The hibachi tables are very cramped and they pack you in.
Today, I ordered the Hibachi Scallops and Rainbow Roll. The sushi was great, but my scallops were very overcooked and rubbery.
This restaurant has great service, but is in desperate need of a deep cleaning and update.
This is a special occasion type spot, if you like hibachi, because it's entertaining to watch the chef cook in front of you. Considering the amount of butter and other seasonings they put in, you would think the food would be flavorful, but I think it's bland without the dipping sauces. The chicken, I believe is white meat, is a bit on the dry side, but the filet mignon is tender (I'm not a fan of their terriyaki chicken, but to each its own). It's also pricey, but you do get a generous amount of food.
I love Benihana - but the hostess who works the front of the room at the downtown location is a deal-breaker for me. She is loud, rude and completely unhelpful. We had two reservations (a party of 5 and a party of 6 - booked through Open Table) When we arrived at the restaurant, she told us she could only seat us as a party of 8 and a party of 3. And instead of trying to work with us on it, or explaining the configuration, she pretty much said we had to take it or leave it. Since we had a large party and it was already noon, we took it, but I wasn't happy. I then found out that the 8/3 seating was ok. Our parties were adjacent. If the woman at the front had explained it that way, instead of being obstinate and rude, i wouldn't have been so angry at the start of the meal.
Once you get past her, Benihana is a good experience and our servers were top notch. But since that hostess is the first person customers interact with, I can see her turning away a lot of business. She is terrible.
We have taken my daughter, now family of six, to Beni-Hana for my daughters birthday celebration for the last 36 years. I truly believe this was one of, if not the best, dinners we have enjoyed at Beni-Hana. The young man who prepared the meal was fabulous and our server took of all of our needs, even before we knew we wanted them. Awesome evening!
The restaurant was really hot. Very uncomfortable. Food was not served correctly. Everyone ate at separate times. Shrimp and salmon were soooo over cooked. They were both left on grill for over 15 minutes. Never got hot tea. We remembered after the fact. MEAL WAS VERY OVERPRICED. AND THE RESTAURANT NEEDS A FACELIFT. WE WERE THERE EARLY (5) AND THE FLOORS LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE EMPTIED TRASH ON THEM. NASTY.
Our reservation was at 8:30 didn't eat until about 10:15.. our waitress was horrible she kept forgetting everything she made ordering very difficult by asking unnecessary questions confusing the whole table.. our shrimp was overcooked. I think the chef was tired. His performance was very lame. Out of all benihana experiences this was the worse. The last time I came to this location the chef was drunk or buzzed cuz the whole table smelled him but we had a good time cuz he was a goofy drunk.. but overall my family and I may have to switch locations for the benihana outing.
This is our second time at Benihana. We have two young kids and they loved it, the teppanyaki chefs went to extra effort to engage the kids and joke around with them. It's my 4yo daughter's favourite restaurant now. The food itself is delicious - excellent cuts of beef, well cooked and tender, and the seafood (scallops and lobster) also fabulous.
