Benihana - Carlsbad Ratings and Reviews
I'm not sure if Benihana in general has gone downhill or maybe just this location. I have always enjoyed my experiences at this restaurant before but left this last time feeling underwhelmed. First, the service was great. No issues there. Our Chef was funny and friendly. He was great, although my steak was over cooked, but really it wasn't that big of a deal. Here are the things I had an issue with: 1. The smell. Maybe they were having problems in the kitchen or something but there was an overwhelming mildew-y smell coming from the doorway. 2. My drink. I ordered a specialty cocktail and it was soooo watered down I almost doubt there was alcohol in it at all. 3. I got splashed by sauce from the chef behind us. It was in my hair and all over my shirt. At first I thought a vent was leaking but then I smelled it and realized what had happened. Probably a byproduct of squeezing tables in close and people rushing around.
All in all, not enough to complain to anyone about but enough that I probably won't be back to this location.
It had been a few years, about 5 or 6 since we had dinner here. And once it came time for our reservation I remembered why. Our reservation was for 7:45 pm and we did not get seated down until 8:15 pm. It took another 15 min until somebody came and took a drink order. The restaurant was under staffed. The service after that was ok. The hibachi cook was entertaining and very good with the food. The food was good but not recommended to take your new date there. They use a lot of garlic butter so you will smell like coming out of there and the taste of garlic will be with you long after you brush and rinse and rinse and rinse. I would say if you are not hungry, in a hurry and with your family, it is a good show for preteens and above.
The waitress was fantastic, but the chef was slow slow and then slower, took forever to cook our food. Food wasn’t seasoned well, and he seemed confused about how to cook it.
Not really any show, the tricks he did try he messed up. Couldn’t even do Volcano. Would eat here again since I love Benihana, but only if I was quarantied a different chef.
The food is fresh and perfectly prepared. The meat melts in your mouth, the seafood is sweet and succulent. The fried rice was great and so were the fresh veggies. Maybe make the shrimp portions a little bigger for kids meals? The chef is fun and friendly. But , it’s expensive and can be so noisy you can miss some of the jokes! Overall, our whole family had a great time and were satisfied.
We went for my daughter’s 10th birthday and also had two loud young ones. The overall noise level made this ok. Otherwise I’m sure we would have disturbed a lot of people. They sang to my daughter and she received ice cream with a candle which was very nice. The food was great and we would definitely go again. My only complaint would be that the kids meals do not have free refills on drinks and the veggies that come with the meals are mainly onions. I liked the onions but it would have been nice to have a little more zucchini or a 3rd veggie for the price.
Food was good, waitress was a little rude, didn't bring my drink out until food started and was rude when i inquired about it. Charged me for drinks i didn't order and had to go get it changed after i asked about it. Took our food order incorrectly and had to coordinate with chef to change things around and that delayed the food. Everything else was great.
We had a 6:00 reservation for six of us, including 4 adults and 2 small children. We were finally seated at 6:15. We ordered drinks that took forever to be delivered and it wasn't until 7:00 that we were finally asked for our food order. The chef didn't appear until 7:20. By then, the five year old and two year old were starving and antsy. The chef apologized saying he had to drive up to Carlsbad from San Diego. But, instead of cooking the kids dinners first, he took his time cooking everything. The 2 year old lost interest by then. The food was delicious but taking two hours to eat dinner is ridiculous. We ordered a second round of drinks about 7:15 and again it took forever to get them delivered. We love Benihana as it is a great place to take kids and family members to celebrate a birthday but this night, everything was terribly off and slow.
Benihana is what it is, and if you are going, you know why. Food is good, cooking show is the star. Kids love it for birthday celebrations (family as it's quite expensive to bring a whole gaggle of kids.) Our family loves this spot and we always enjoy our time.
Terrible night. Our server got our orders wrong. We had to wait over an hour for the chef to start cooking. The chef also had zero personality. He literally said nothing & didn’t do anything entertaining while cooking. The food was awful tonight as well. It was my son’s birthday & they didn’t sing or bring him ice cream like they usually do. I will never return. I’m done with this overpriced place.
We waited 1 1/2 hours for our dinner just to be started after we sat. They said they were very short staffed. The Su chef has to come out and cook for us, because the Chef that they had for us was wiping his nose on his sleeve and coughing. The girl at there table didn't even eat her dinner she was so disgusted. We all were, the waitress was asked to split our bill then comes back with one bill. We asked before we were seated. She then was told we had two birthdays and she brings out one ice cream embarrassing the table. Total cluster of nothing but chaotic. Then yummy rice was less then ok. It was shameful.
We were there at 4:00 pm which was a more quiet time. After about a twenty minute wait we were seated with others and began a conversation with the group. The server first arrived about ten minutes later and we ordered drinks. The sodas were flat, but the server replaced them. The chef was a joy to watch and customized our meal according to our requests. Overall it was a typical evening at Benihana's, enjoyable and tasty...
I booked this place for 8. We had a birthday party. I thought it went real well. The wait staff was great. Our chef lacked a little enthusiasm. We watched the other chef across from us and he was much better and did more tricks. He was also more interactive with the guests. We would have left a bigger tip if the chef was better.
Also, they do have vegan options!
The chef was great, but the other service was horrible. We couldn't order another beer or even get a water. We had to get up and ask another server. We didn't even get desert he just brought the check. The poor lady at the table was missing half her meal. Really disappointed.
Had a fantastic time with our birthday boy and three of his friends. The chef (Noodles) was entirely entertaining. Two of the boys had never been to Benihana’s and by the time we left, it was repeatedly announced that Benihana’s is their new favorite restaurant! Way to score future customers!
