We enjoyed the food and atmosphere, we were lacking in access to our server, despite the sparse grouping of tables. For the prices and the environment the service was more like I would find at Outback Steakhouse not necessary at Benihana.
The wait to sit at our teppan table was long. After we sat down we waited 45 mins for our chef to show up. I spoke to the manager and she was apologetic at first. At the end of our dining experience she said our wait time was acceptable to her and offered us a free appetizer on our return trip. Return? Hmmm… if your customer service is bad now, why would we want to return.
reservations was at 545pm, got seated at 7pm. Took a very long time for everything. Celebrating a birthday. No one said chicken was added to the fried rice till after the fact and charged price was ridiculous. Took a long time to get my drink. Very disappointed and will not return.
Very slow dining experience. My son picked the restaurant for his 6th birthday. Service was nice but we had to wait at every step. We got to the restaurant at our reservation time but had to wait to be seated. Once seated, we had to wait to place our order and be greeted. Once ordered, we had to wait for the chef to come to our table. For our 4:30 reservations, we didn't leave until 6:30 which is tough on little kids. Menu items are expensive but you are paying for the show.
We visited to celebrate 2 birthdays. They took us to our table about 5 to 10 mins after our reservation time and we got our drinks and ordered pretty quickly. Then unfortunately we sat for over 30 mins waiting on our chef. We learned that they are greatly understaffed right now, as are many restaurants. Once our chef arrived, the night resumed and the rest of the evening was top notch. We felt bad for the staff there as they must be working serious hours under stress since they are so low on headcount. Regardless, the food was great and so was the service. They will get back going to normal soon enough. Shout out to our chef John. The guy is a magician with the knife.
My family and I had a very enjoyable meal at Benihana's in Carlsbad, CA. We had the 6 course meal special. Chef Carmen cooked our food perfectly. The steak, shrimp, lobsters and all the sides all were delicious. It was a wonderful experience for our family.
I’m gluten free and they were very accommodating. I brought my own salad dressing since I can’t have theirs. They even have gluten free soy sauce
Our Teppan Chef was amazing. So personable and gave us a wonderful show while cooking up an delicious lunch of steak & shrimp, chicken fried rice.
It was my Son’s 15th birthday so we were looking forward to lunch there even though we drove almost an hour to get there. Enjoyed Tim the Chef, he was really funny and a really great Chef, but my only complaint is that I have to say the portion size was REALLY small even for lunch. I left there hungrier then when I went in. I would recommend it but be aware that for the amount it cost you aren’t given a lot of food.
Our reservation was for 12:30pm. My 8 year old niece and I were the only ones seated at the grill. The other grills were completely empty. There were a total of 5 table diners, 1 take out diner sitting at the bar and my niece and me. Our chef didn’t arrive to the table until 1pm. When he started to do the spatula show, he dropped the spatula three times. On the third drop, it hit my niece’s soup and spilled all over her. Apologies from the chef but not the server nor front of house manager were there to help clean up the mess. My hot tea was not refilled until near the end of our meal nor was the glass of iced water brought out to me. I ordered two orders of fried rice but the chef only cooked one order. I noticed the small portion while he was cooking it but wanted to see if perhaps I was wrong. When he finished lining the one order of fried rice into a bowl, I then told him that we ordered two orders of fried rice. He had to get more rice from the kitchen to make the second order for me. When we received the bill from our sever, I explained to her that we were not messy diners and that our chef accidentally dropped his spatula and it hit the soup bowl which spilled all over my niece. She said not to worry and that was the end of the story. No apologies or acknowledgement of any sort. Thank goodness the soup had been sitting at our table for a good 15 minutes and had time to cool down before the chef arrived. I overheard a server tell the diner at the bar that they only have two chefs. It’s so sad when folks have the opportunity to make more sitting at home collecting unemployment than to go back to work. I dined at close to 20 Benihana locations and this was by far the most poorly trained staffed I have seen. No concessions were made after the mishap. I cleaned up their mess, paid the full price plus 20% gratuity. This place is sad.
Had a good time. The server started off great but seem to forget about us after our cook started cooking. We had to flag him down for refills and items we needed like forks and a spill clean up. It could have been a perfect visit if he just would have been a bit more attentive.
awesome services and very cool attmitfile . looking forward on come back .
Had a reservation at 4:15 but didn’t get seated until 5:10. Manager never came by to apologize. Restaurant is run down, bathroom floor was sticky, parking lot had trash everywhere. Turned out to be a 3 hour dinner. This is the second time in a row that we have been extremely disappointed. Maybe it’s just this location but I would never recommend this place.
Poor staff service. Our reservation was for 2:45 and we were seated about an hour after that without anyone explaining why we had to wait an hour. One server explained it was his fourth day working there while another said it would be 15 minutes which turned into an hour. We are about three hours after our food was ready so everyone was hungry. I asked to speak to the manager and they never came to talk to me. This was embarrassing to have my family wait so long with no one really helping out. It was not crowded at all. No one spoke to us about the issue but it was apparent there was a staff issue. At least be honest with the guests who are about to spend a lot of money on the experience and food if they had staff not show up to work. What good is a reservation if it can’t be honored in a reasonable amount of time?
Seriously the food and service were great - very cozy.
It was our first time back since things started opening back up. The Chef was fabulous. Food was great. Our server was training a new hire so things were missed - but totally understandable.
Chef Trevor is the best!!
Our Chef, Timmy, was incredibly entertaining. He knew a lot of tricks and was very funny but sensitive to where humor boundaries were. The Person who took our orders was very communicative and attentive. He kept us apprised of our order status and provided for special requests of food. Both were careful to provide for considerations to allergies. We tried to get a reservation in San Diego but they were booked so this is the first time we came to Carlsbad. It is closer to where we live so we will try this location first from now on. Considering everything I wrote about, I would highly recommend this location.
A lot less crowded than we expected but the experience was still there.
We waited over 30 minutes to be seated, my reservation was at 11:30 am, we were seated after 12:00 pm. The front desk said her manager told her to make us wait because they didn't have enough staff. Wow. I'm so disappointed that a high end place would even treat their customers, in such manner. Then why have reservations if I have to wait over 30 minutes to be seated. Might as well call this place Panda Express.
It’s a real treat right now if you can get a reservation because it isn’t that crowded. They only have a few tables at a time.
A family of four about two hundred and thirty dollars. Well worth it for that special occasion.
The food was amazing as always. The restaurant was very quiet and nice as well .
It was fun to watch the chef but he was way too noisy.
Made reservation for 1:15PM did not seated until 2:00 PM. What do we need make reservation?
Ordered a wine never come.
Food cooked burned.
Benihana is our go to place to celebrate birthdays in the family. Being able to go after missing 2 years of birthdays was amazing. The service was good and the waitress Samantha was fast and attentive. The jewel of the evening was our Teppanyaki chef John who was very entertaining and everything was cooked to perfection. It was awesome to be out dining with our family again.
We had Adam as our waiter and Trevor as our cook. Both were awesome and we absolutely loved our time there. Definitely going again!!!
Server was great! The cook over cooked our steaks, had to ask him to take it off the grill. So that was disappointing. Other than that it was good. Next time I will not hesitate to speak up sooner. He should know what medium rare and rare looks like.
we arrived at 5 pm for a 5 pm reservation and we were not seated until 5:45pm. Then without my knowing at 5:30 they changed our reservation on open table to 5:45pm without even telling us or asking us. Our chef was great the food was great. But they just let us sit there for 45 minutes with no communication as to when we would be seated.
What's more frustrating is that I had called to ask if we could be moved to 5:30 and they said no only to show up and have to wait 45 minutes. Had they moved us when I called a week before it would have been a 15 minute extra wait rather than 45.
We had lunch there yesterday with our 8 year old granddaughter. Timmie was our chef and he was fabulous! Great personality. Very funny. Food was perfectly cooked. Restaurant was completely empty except for us and a couple at our table. Finally two other small families came in. Granddaughter had edamame and teriyaki chicken. She raved about how good everything was and surprisingly loved the onion soup! My husband and I both had a filet and scallops and both were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The ginger dressing on the salad is so delicious. We had a fabulous lunch and everyone left happy. Only downside is only one waitress/bartender so we had to wait awhile for getting drinks and the bill. But it was understandable when the restaurant wasn't busy at all during lunchtime to have more than one waitress.
They are having real issues in keeping up with reservation times right now. Reservation at 7:15 and didn't get seated until 8 pm. Was told that they only had 2 chefs that night and was very understaffed. I know this is Covid times but this was unacceptable. In my opinion, I think people rather collect the $750 unemployment than work. The manager was nice and gave us free appetizers and 30%off bill so we got about $85 taken off our bill hence I gave them overall 2 stars.
Great food and service!
The wait was over an hour with reservations. They explained they were down a server and it would be a while. When we sat at the bar, no one served us but when a couple sat down, they served them right away. Just seemed understaffed at the time we were there.
Lunch portions was good no need for appetizers. Our chef Tim was excellent alot of fun overall we had a great lunch.
Great service, our chef Trevor was super funny and very accommodating to our needs. Two members of our party needed they’re food to be gluten free and he made them first being very careful with cross contamination and he got us a brand new gluten free soy sauce bottle fit our table.
Benihana juice cocktail is delicious
Good food, Good Value
I always love doing dinner at Benihana. This location is no exception. I absolutely loved our chef, show was good and food was great.
We had a great dinner. Benihana is open again but at reduced capacity so it was very quiet and our party of 2 shared the table with another party of 2 so very appropriate social distancing was achieved. The food was as good as ever!
Screaming kids next to our table running rampant and covering the floor in rice. Wildly unpleasant. Trevor was awesome though.
