Benihana - Bethesda Ratings and Reviews
Unfortunately we went to Benihana Bethesda for my daughter's 5th birthday. Overall terrible. We were seated almost a half hour after our reservation with no explanation or apology. As soon as we finally sat down and got settled they asked us to move to accommodate another guest. We told 3 people and put on the reservation that it was my daughter's birthday--there was no mention of it again. Chef was completely disengaged and miserable. When we got up to go another guest not in our party but at our table said "this is terrible, I can't believe they didn't do anything for your kids birthday." Never again, Benihana.
The experience had here for my husbands birthday was lack luster. We waited 20 minutes for a table even though we had a reservation. The food was typical of any habachi restaurant, yet the prices where atronomical. Our drink costed the same price as our 6 course meal. Even though we used the birthday club coupon, we spent well over $100 for two 6-course meals and 1 drink. Moreover, they did not have the green tea ice cream or banana custard available for dessert. If we we would have been advisef of that when ordering, we would opted for the 5-course me instead saving us a little money. Dont think well take the drive to Bethesda to visit this restaurant again, even with my birthday club coupon in December.
This time was very disappointing. Service was horrible. We got seated 15 minutes before another table and they got their food first. Then our server disappeared. Other people at our table had to flag her down to get refills. Then at the end she disappeared again. It was very poor service. The food was good except for the fact that they changed the yum yum sauce and it isn't as good as it used to be.
We came here for my son's 8th birthday. Our reservation was at 6:30. At 7:35 we were still waiting at the table with NO FOOD. The waiter was unapologetic, no appetizers were offered to help the kids with the wait. We ended up walking out. Overall crappy experience. Not impressed.
They did not have our reservation when we arrived despite our Open Table reservation. They seemed surprised that we still wanted a table. We've been once before and service was very fast, but tonight them messed up most of our orders and everything took forever. The smoke also drafted our way for a while, leaving us coughing and throats burning. We had to leave without dessert, because our kids were so tired and miserable. We won't be rushing back.
Generally good service at this Benihana, but we had a weird experience at the regular tables (non-Hibachi grill) seating. The hostess was pulling double duty as our waitress and service suffered despite her best attempts. Maybe stick with hibachi grill seating.
I had not been to this restaurant in a very long time. I learned that the sauces changed about two years ago. Their yum yum sauce is no longer available. The new sauces are not as tasty but likely healthier.
The rice was too mushy for my liking. The meat was bland and the scallops too small for the price of the food. The service was good. Overall , i was not impressed given the price and overall quality of the food.
I've been to a few Benihana's over the years, this is because far the worst. I'm giving it a lousy review because the place is dirty and disgusting. It could really use a deep clean. Plus, it's more like a Chuck-E-Cheese with all the kids there. Birthday party central. It's definitely kid friendly, but not a date night place.
My daughter wanted to go for her 12th birthday because she loved the theatrics of the chef (she went to a friend's birthday there) and thought the food was good too. There were quite a few other tables with young guests celebrating their birthdays too. So it was clearly kid friendly. She enjoyed it which was the most important part.
So if you're expecting a romantic dinner this is not the place. First you share your table with other folks which is fine but not private. You could have been seated at my daughters birthday table and enjoyed the birthday song and some other catchy tune. Maybe worst of all you leave smelling like a French fry.
The food was fine but not great for the price.
The quality of the chef will probably make the biggest difference in your experience.
Always a fantastic time when we visit and we visit 1-2 times annually!!
My hubby absolutely loves this place and I completely understand why!! He's requested to become he for the past 8 to 9 years for his birthday dinner and we have!
The past two years we've been going early enough to catch happy hour! Great idea, almost everything on the dinner menu is on the happy hour menu! The drinks are wonderful, the food is delicious, and the food comes out within 10 minutes of ordering! What more could you ask for!
The table person that we always get who makes our food is always friendly, accurate, and gets the food cooked within a decent time! We've hosted parties 4 guest of 4 to 14 people each year and it's always been a great experience! The uniforms are always nice and clean, they're always very the attentive, the orders are always 100% correct and the establishment itself is always very very clean!
I look forward to returning back for my husband's birthday 2018!
This time my experience with Benihana waa very bad. The server was totally not listening. There was place for only seven people on the table but she got an extra chair to seat me at the same table. I told her it is too crowded. But she insisted. There was no place to keep my stuff. I practically held my bowls and plates in my hand to eat. There was no silverware and plate for the extra person. I asked her for it but she forgot inspite of reminding three times. I had to get up and ask another server to help me. But when i got the fork ther was food on it and my plate. I asked her to change it and she took many reminders again. I had not finished eating and she almost took my plate from my hand. This was a very bad experience.
This place is a bit TOO KID FRIENDLY for me. It had been many years since we had been there. Our last experience was when it was located in the Air Rights building....it was terrible. It was noisy, there were kids running around and at one point a child ran into our waitress while she was carrying hot sake' and it spilled on me. I was burned but not seriously. Fast forward quite a number of years....we were there last Sunday. Ir was excessively noisy, there were kids running around NON STOP and no parent nor manager made any attempt to stop them. I know the current generation is parents do nothing to reprimand their children, but for goodness sake, a manager should have made some sort of statement to the multiple tables with uncontrolled children. If we move past that, the service was good, the food was exactly what I expected, and i enjoyed the meal, HOWEVER, I won't go back. I understand the "Family"concept but there has to be SOME POINT where it becomes an inconvenience to other diners and a liability ton the establishment. If there is a time when it isn't SO DAMN NOISY I would go back.
We are long time customers of Benihana. Our last visit just wasn't quite right. The presentation both by the chef and of the food on the plate was lacking. It was sloppy and rushed. The food was not cut up small enough to use chopsticks. The fried rice was flat. The vegetables were unappealing. They seem to be moving away from the Japanese enticement.
The food was good. The prices went up a lot since our last visit. I think the food portions are a bit smaller as well. They no longer do the complimentary photo for special occasions. They've also replaced their nice cloth napkins with cheap paper napkins like you find at a fast food place.
We felt rushed to finish eating and leave. The waiter came to take the desserts orders while we were still eating the main course. As soon as we took our last bite they were clearing away the dirty dishes.
Overall the food was great. I had a reservations and only waited a couple minutes to be seated. I love the rice, shrimp, mushrooms, onions, soup and salad, I could eat that everyday and be content. The drinks are great but very pricey. I had a birthday coupon which brought down the cost of my meal. They have come down a little bit on the tricks and stunts, maybe because I've seen it before and because I remember how it was when I was younger and was much more impressionable, but overall the chef was nice and did a good job. We were one of his last tables. I really couldn't have asked for much more.
Hanging out with friends for the weekend, we were trying to figure out where to go for dinner. I mentioned Benihana and the other 2 friends said, "LET'S DO IT!" A glass of plum wine as we were chilling 'til our chef showed up to entertain us with silly, cheesy, but FUN antics made for an enjoyable evening with friends. It's not fast food so we enjoyed a leisurely evening laughing and talking. We were stuffed so it was a great choice for a Saturday evening.
It's been years since I've been to a Japanese steak house and decades since I've been to a Benihana. This was much as I remembered it - good service, good chef, fun "show." What I loved was their ability and willingness to accommodate two food allergies within our party - one to shellfish and one to gluten. They cooked the items for these guests before contaminants touched the hibachi. What I missed is how I remember the food tasting and the portions. While it was good and I enjoyed my meal, I have this memory of Benihana, specifically, having food I would crave and be unable to find or replicate any other way. Perhaps I've become a snobbish foodie. Perhaps I've acquired the requisite skills to cook delicious food at home. Perhaps it was always more about the special events which brought me to Benihana that made the food seem so spectacular. Either way, the nostalgia has worn a bit and while still good it's just not what I remembered.
I have been to benihana my whole life-one of my all time favorites. This visit was disappointing. My white rice never arrived and the chef didn't cut our food small enough so we had to cut it ourselves which is difficult considering they don't give you a knife. Also it was my daughters birthday and normally they take a family picture, but not this time
Lights were not properly positioned at the grill across from us and our table was blinded. We were sitting with a family with young children and although I have my own and don't mind, had I been anyone else there would have been complaints as the kid was almost laying on me and I'm just surprised that the restaurant, knowing it's community seating, doesn't ask the parents to flank their children so as to avoid children potentially ruining others' dining experience.
Otherwise, the food is delicious and the service is outstanding. I accidentally sloshed one of my sauces (into my food, so I hadn't lost it), and the chef immediately asked if I wanted it refilled, while he was cooking the food! You usually don't get that kind of attentive service at typical dining establishments.
