Benihana - Bethesda Ratings and Reviews
The teppan cook was good. The service was horrible. We received our soup and salad after the main course was served. The server did not refill any drink for the entire table. The restrooms were disgusting. I’ve been to many Benihana restaurants nationwide. This one was the worst by far.
The staff was rude and the service was terrible. It was definitely the worst hibachi experience I've ever had. The chef barely did any tricks. The hostesses were extremely rude. Our waiter kept forgetting our order (did not bring green tea or ice cream included with meal, even though we asked). Also, I had to ask for water at least 5 different times, and didn't get any until the end of the meal. This experience ruined my birthday. I will not be returning!
They were running an hour behind on reservation times causing us to have to wait and the restaurant was so cold that everyone was sitting with their warm coats on. The food and service were good (once we were seated) but they really need to get their act together if they'll continue to accept reservations.
We had reservation at 14:00 but didn't get our first course (soup) until 14:30 (or a bit later)- the soup was cold (feel like it was sitting out for long time). Our server just screwed up so many things. Not an ideal way to start a new year, especially paying Holiday menu price.
The cooking started around 14:40 - no complaints to the chef, as he did a wonderful job.
The restaurant is extremely cold. Even with cooking right in front of us, all of us at the table kept our coats on.
I visit this establishment at least twice a year, I’m not a resident of the city, I prefer their chicken fried rice over Kobe’s. Anyway, this particular visit was for dinner on NYE. My reservation was at 930pm I arrived late but they still honored my reservation. The host informed us that the dining room was cold this evening but being as though it was NYE and past 10pm other dining options were slim. Food was okay, the lobster was great. However the waitress never came back after the entrees were done so that I could order another round of drinks. I also expected maybe, since everyone dined with their jackets on a nice gesture, like free chicken fried rice, would’ve been a cool compromise. Either way Benihana is always god for a nice evening dinner. I’m sure next time the temperature will be just right!
new year's eve, the heat didn't seem to be working. however it took a LOT of agitated people at our table for them to address it by offering a 25% discount. they should have acknowledged the problem as soon as we arrived. even staff was bundled up. instead the manager kept telling staff to tell us that the heat was working.
The heat was not working -- on New Year's Eve no less! We were freezing during the entire meal. The restaurant was understaffed which meant that it took 15 minutes to get a glass of water and another 15 minutes to get a refill. Also, the hot soup did not come out after the chef had begun preparing the main courses. The family next to us received their appetizers after they completed their meal.
The chef was distracted and not fun for the kids. Also, the kids like the sherbert and we like the green tea ice cream. Guess what? The restaurant was out of both. At 7:00 p.m. We should have expected some of this being New Year's but it was a lousy experience. We won't go back. If 0 stars was a choice above, I would have gone with that. Not cheap, either.
The entire experience was awful! The restaurant had no heat and we all had to eat with coats and hats. It was my twin daughters 7th birthday and New Years Eve, we had reservations for 7 and bill came up over $300plus dollar for terrible ambiance, ceiling is falling apart, cold interior and food that was small in size for hibachi and not all that good. Our chef didn’t entertain the girls...it sucked terribly. Don’t waste your time or $$$!
We decided to spend New Years Eve with our son (age 5), our friends and their children (ages 5 and 3) at Benihana in Bethesda. It was a terrible mistake.
We were greeted by a very rude hostess, only after she wondered off a few times and came back. She had a space heater I noticed.
When we were finally seated we were freezing. The people dining around us wore winter coats.
The wind chill outside was below zero.
There was a hole in the ceiling above our table which added to the chill. We switched tables to get away from the open ceiling, but it was still freezing.
This is not an exaggeration – You could see the waiter’s breath inside the restaurant when he talked to us.
We told him it was my son’s birthday and he said he would handle it.
It took a long time to get our drinks and food, while freezing. The hot table helped warm us up. But the kids complained of being cold and were so unhappy.
The water brought ice cream after the meal, totally forgetting about my son’s birthday, which to a 5 year old is a big deal. We would have said something, but the staff was already setting the table for the next diners, while we sat there to get us out.
My husband was given the wrong check.
We were all so cold. On the way out I asked why it was so cold. Another woman at the hostage station said “the heats broken, been broken since Friday.” She was wearing a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.
I told her about our awful experience and asked if there was anything they could do, at least a discount which she replied. “No, no one gets discounts.”
And to top it all off on the way out, my son and his friend slipped on the ice on the restaurant’s ramp and fell. My son’s friend was crying and bleeding.
I can’t even begin to describe our disappointment and negligence of this restaurant. It was a truly horrendous New Year’s Eve experience, with no attempt to make it better.
The absolute WORST Dinning experience EVER! It was FREEZING the heat was not working and they didn't even have portable heaters the temperature inside felt pretty much the same as outside. Just about everyone was sitting at the tables eating with their hats and coats on. The staff was walking around with coats and hoodies on. The the manager Mimi looked me in my face and lied saying it's 84 degrees inside I looked at her like she was crazy and informed her that several of her staff already told me the heat wasn't working she then said "okay well I'll give you 20% off your bill" as if that makes up for her lying or sitting in that icebox. I feel so bad for the staff who have to endure those working conditions. So sad
The restaurant was frigid cold. We have had record temperature lows and they didn’t have the decency to have the HVAC working before a huge holiday rush. They tried to heat the restaurant with small space heaters but it didn’t help at all. They should have called patrons beforehand but they didn’t because they wanted the $ putting us in a difficult situation. We were hungry and cold. The food didn’t even stay warm on the plate. Worst experience and we won’t be returning anytime soon.
It was so entertaining to sit at a hibachi table and watch our meal being prepared... we had eight people in our party so we filled all the seats at the table...it was like a private party! Our chef was funny. The food was great - fried rice and grilled veggies were especially yummy. A little drafty at our table - freezing cold night - but we did get warmth from the grill, so it was ok. Great place to eat!
We didn’t even get seated. For as much as we love the food here, the staff is always overwhelmed with being understaffed. Poor management. The lady at reception barely acknowledged us, then we told her we had a reservation for 8:30 and she said she will take care of us. The next gentlemen that came over said that they have 7 tables to seat in front of us, it would be 10PM before we get seated. We opted to walk out and go somewhere else. It’s too bad they don’t have another location here. The food is so bomb!
On Saturday, we came to celebrate my 50th bday with friends & family. Our Chef was so
dry and seemed drunk...He just was NOT with it...The host/waiter dude was AWESOME!!!
But Our chef was some garbage...I kind of want a do-over bc the wait w/Reservations was
over an hr....complete Chaos at the front door!!! So confusing and overwhelming, that we
started to leave. The Bathroom was downright disgusting & AWFUL....wet paper towel and toilet paper was everywhere, like no staff had even tried to clean it in the 3 hrs we were there. I decided to not go back into the restroom for the entire dinner. It was that bad...just nasty.
I went there to celebrate my husbands Birthday. As we were trying to eat our food, the staff was trying to close for the evening. Vacuuming, spraying cleaning fluids, and often ignoring our presence. The portions are very small for the price. When it was time for the Birthday song. It was almost none existent. Everybody was more interested in going home than to make sure the Birthday song was sung with excitement. Only one person came out, and another girl came , as she was pulled away from another table while she was explaining the bill to her customers.
Maybe they shouldnt advertise Birthday celebrations because this visit was a mere disappointment.
What surprised me most was, when I ask for more onions and zucchini, during the cooking process, I was hit with an $3.00 charge for each very small slice unbeknownst to me. When I explained my concerns to the Manager on duty. A short Asian lady. She was rude, unconcerned, and pretty much eager to tell me the $6 stands. As I used to visit this location about 20 times a year, I will not return.
The Bethesda location was freezing. We were told that it would get better once the grill got hot. It did not. We asked to move tables but even though there were many tables empty, they did not move us. The group sitting with us also complained. They said they would bring hot tea but did not. Being so cold just ruined the mood--a shame because the food is great.
