Benihana - Bethesda Ratings and Reviews
Great experience and great food! This was a first for my entire family and we enjoyed every moment. The service was great and the restaurant was spotless. Ordered shrimp and it tasted fishy, clearly not fresh. Besides the nasty shrimp, I had an excellent experience.
Extremely busy Sunday night; lots of families and big groups. Felt that the service staff were overwhelmed (not enough staff) - it took well over 15-20 minutes for our drinks - not cool - not sure if that was a wait staff issue or bar issue but it should be addressed quickly. We had to wait 2-4 minutes for forks after our salads came to the table - chef was great and good is always very good.
Arrived at 744 pm for our 745 pm reservation and checked in immediately. Waited until 805 pm, 20 minutes, and still we were not seated nor communicated to by any of the staff. We left promptly, went to another restaurant. Will not be returning unfortunately........
All but the initial welcome were five star. I was particularly impressed with the manager who roamed the dining area, checking tables, picking up debris on the floor, and generally monitoring the tables. Very impressive.
Benihana, like most restaurants, has a policy of not seating anyone until the whole group arrives. However, as a 75-year old woman who looked her age that day, accompanied by my sister, who was 71 and who uses a white cane, I was not impressed by being told to have a seat at the bar. An excellent hostess would have sized up the situation and offered chairs for the two of us. When all members of our party did arrive--we came in three waves--the table wasn't ready. Finally, when we were just gathering around the table and deciding on seating, she started to robotically go through a script about being our hostess, blah, blah, blah. Needs more training in how to be really good at her job.
Very nice. We were celebrating a birthday and didn't have a cake. The staff went out and bought a cake for us .... even candles and saved the day. We had two young children. There were plenty of others there. No one worried about noise and crawling under the table. Not really a place for a nice quiet, adult dinner.
Upon arrival for our 7:15 reservation, we had to wait in the lobby for 10 minutes. It would seem that a reservation should be prepared that allowed us to be seated on time. The hostess was not friendly, had a male friend visiting with her at the check in desk, very unprofessional. It seems service on the weekdays is below par. Additionally, the chef cooked my vegetables in/around the shrimp, when I was clear in explaining that I was a vegetarian. More careful attention the to diner's experience is needed when customers are paying the prices charged here.
Loved the experience me and my girlfriend had the waiter we had was also the bartender he did an amazing job, he was very respectful and kind to us always asked if we wanted something more if we wanted desserts and always refilled our beverages. Great customer service from our waiter he made the experience ten Times better.
Not coming back here ever, waited 1 hr to be seated even though I had a reservation, the place is veryyyy cold, it is freezing, ppl are sitting in coats inside. Now its 30 min of sitting and waiting until the waiter comes to take our order. The food portions are very small, this place is way overpriced.
Although the chef was very nice the host was a bit rude and unfriendly. Now as far as the show when cooking the food we have been at Benihana in Honolulu HI and it was better there. Maybe train them more because we were observing the other tables and all the chefs do the same thing. It will be more entertaining if they learn more tricks! And lastly the food portions are way too small!
Typically love the place. However, this night the service was horrible! Took over 40 min to get our drinks and appetizers which came cold. (The place was only 2/3 full) Chef couldn’t keep the orders straight, kept putting the wrong food on each plate. Chicken ended up over cooked and dry. In the end, even with manager stepping in at the beginning, nothing got better and nothing was taken off the bill or offered to be taken care of after such an awful experience.
We've been to the Atlanta location & loved it. Bethesda shouldn't be allowed to carry the name! The chef scorched our veggies. The seafood was over cooked. My calamari was tough. The chef (Mauro) needs to practice his craft because he couldn't split the egg, plop the shrimp tail in his pocket & the top layer of his volcano wasn't cut properly so he had to improvise. The food was tasteless. If they used the regular mayo or yum yum sauce that may have worked but their version was way too bland. My daughter's birthday dinner didn't turn out as hoped. After getting our initial drink order, salad & soup, the server never returned! We had to stop servers as the passed the table for refills or assistance. I will never return to this location
This location no longer serves the Yum Yum sauce that Benihana is famous for. It has been replaced with a "mustard sauce" which is disappointing. Remember to feed your meter if you park in the back of the restaurant (we made the mistake of forgetting and ended up with a ticket). This location is not my preferred location, we like the Dulles, VA location better. Not a bad experience but just not as good as what we've experienced at the other location. The chef splashed sauce all over my 4 year old (accidentally of course), the hostess did not check us in for our reservation, and we get an annual photo of our family here for our birthday dinner and we have photos from every year of our daughter's life but no picture here b/c the printer was broken, as was our family tradition.
The food was good and was what we expected and everything was overall fine. This was our first time at this location.
We had a horrible experience at Benihana the other night -- in a lot of ways.
Most importantly, the restaurant was very dirty. The carpet was dirty and in bad need of vacuuming, the floors were sticky (and somehow also slippery right in front of the bathroom), the handle to the bathroom was disgusting, the table was not clean, my husband's chair was falling apart. Even the bill folder that was given to us at the end of our meal had food residue on it.
There were other things wrong -- like we had a 7:45pm dinner reservation, didn't get seated until 8 and didn't get a chef at our table until 8:45pm. That is pretty standard for Benihana.
The service was terrible and sporadic - only asked about drink refills once and never served water with very long periods of not seeing our waiter at all.
But - if this restaurant needs to fix anything -- it's the cleanliness problems.
Unfortunately we went to Benihana Bethesda for my daughter's 5th birthday. Overall terrible. We were seated almost a half hour after our reservation with no explanation or apology. As soon as we finally sat down and got settled they asked us to move to accommodate another guest. We told 3 people and put on the reservation that it was my daughter's birthday--there was no mention of it again. Chef was completely disengaged and miserable. When we got up to go another guest not in our party but at our table said "this is terrible, I can't believe they didn't do anything for your kids birthday." Never again, Benihana.
The experience had here for my husbands birthday was lack luster. We waited 20 minutes for a table even though we had a reservation. The food was typical of any habachi restaurant, yet the prices where atronomical. Our drink costed the same price as our 6 course meal. Even though we used the birthday club coupon, we spent well over $100 for two 6-course meals and 1 drink. Moreover, they did not have the green tea ice cream or banana custard available for dessert. If we we would have been advisef of that when ordering, we would opted for the 5-course me instead saving us a little money. Dont think well take the drive to Bethesda to visit this restaurant again, even with my birthday club coupon in December.
This time was very disappointing. Service was horrible. We got seated 15 minutes before another table and they got their food first. Then our server disappeared. Other people at our table had to flag her down to get refills. Then at the end she disappeared again. It was very poor service. The food was good except for the fact that they changed the yum yum sauce and it isn't as good as it used to be.
We came here for my son's 8th birthday. Our reservation was at 6:30. At 7:35 we were still waiting at the table with NO FOOD. The waiter was unapologetic, no appetizers were offered to help the kids with the wait. We ended up walking out. Overall crappy experience. Not impressed.
They did not have our reservation when we arrived despite our Open Table reservation. They seemed surprised that we still wanted a table. We've been once before and service was very fast, but tonight them messed up most of our orders and everything took forever. The smoke also drafted our way for a while, leaving us coughing and throats burning. We had to leave without dessert, because our kids were so tired and miserable. We won't be rushing back.
Generally good service at this Benihana, but we had a weird experience at the regular tables (non-Hibachi grill) seating. The hostess was pulling double duty as our waitress and service suffered despite her best attempts. Maybe stick with hibachi grill seating.
