Benihana - Bethesda
Benihana has long been a birthday tradition for our family which means 6 visits per year. Unfortunately, we've seen a rapid decline in service. Over the years the wait for every aspect of the evening has increased. Once seated, we wait an inordinate amount of time for a waitress to take a drink order. The wait continues to request our meal order and now, typically, we know that we won't see our waitress again for quite some time. The chef cooking for us (with the exception of one who nearly lit a guest on fire) has always been excellent. But the other waitstaff we see standing around as we wait for a water refill or dishes to be removed. This most recent visit was ridiculous. The waitress brought our appetizer as we had just completed dinner. The second glass of wine I had ordered 20 minutes prior, I canceled as we were requesting the check. The takeout salad dressing, she forgot. At one point I stacked all 6 soup bowls in front of me and even the assistant manager (or manager) ran around looking past us every time. He never bothered to stop and remove this mountain of bowls, nor did anyone else for 15-20 minutes. It was my daughter's birthday...she was never offered ice cream, the birthday song that we come for skipped. And for what it's worth, only once that I've ever been there have we been offered green tea though it's part of our meal. Though it's been a terrible level of service we had continued to come back, tolerating the increasing level of poor service but this one took the cake and we'll be looking for a new birthday venue.
Maybe....Last visit service was awful. But other times has been ok.
Service was really bad
This was our best visit. The service moved at a great pace and Sergio was the best cook we have ever experienced, the balance of the waitstaff was appropriately attentive and made our birthdays memorable!
We REALLY loved our cook, Martinez. He was great, funny, pleasant and MADE AMAZNG FOOD!! Thanks Martinez!!!!!!
The food was wonderful, as usual. We left full but not overly stuffed. We will be back.
We went to celebrate my friend's birthday and we had a wonderful time period
We dine here ALOT so some experiences are better than others but we enjoy the food.
Service and food were just OK
Used to be consistent dining experience but has gone downhill in the last year.
The food was good, however the service was poor. Our waitress was slow and whenever she would come to the table she would forget an item, leave to go get the item, take forever again and we would have to remind her about it. Whether it was to bring us water or dressing for the salad or an additional utensil.
The waiter charged me for chicken friend rice, when I didn’t ask for it.
There was a mixup, and the chef did not prepare fried rice for me. Then I apparently was caught in an argument with the staff, and I had to wait a long time for my rice, until after my other food was ready. Then I was still charged for the rice and the manager said nothing to address the problem. The staff was nice enough, but the quality of service and value for what you get has gone down. I do not recommend this location.
Enjoyed dining at Benihana as always. Food was delicious, chef was outstanding. Thank you Joel! Waiter was attentive. Thank you Myeisha aka Mimi. We’ll be back next week.
This place has dropped in quality over the years. Food wasn't good this time. Our chef was pretty bad at his tricks.
Great food and also great family fun
Benihana is not the same anymore.
I think Benihana is what it is -- a fun place to go with kids or a group of friends. However, with just me and my wife, the experience was just OK. The food was good and the initial service was OK. But we ended up waiting 20 minutes after our we finished eating just to get the check. We were only offered dessert after we flagged down a staff member to get the check. Overall, we likely won't return for a date night but maybe with a bunch of friends.
I was very disappointed in the service at this location. I’ve visited several locations across the country and I’ve never had such a terrible experience. The chef rushed through cooking the meal and did not take the time to properly season the food. Our waitress was overworked with too many tables including a table that had more than ten people seated. The soup was good, but the salad didn’t arrive until after the entrees were cooked and eaten. Our drinks were never refilled. Only when someone walked to the refill station to fill their own drink was assistance provided by another waiter. The rest of the table never received a refill. Our server only returned to give out checks and did not ask about the flavor of ice cream or tea that is included with certain meals. The manager did nothing about the subpar service until we complained multiple times. This location brings down the reputation of Benihana. Do not eat here.
Made 9 pm reservations, arrived & was told we had to wait. We went to the bar thinking we could order there but was told it would take 45 minutes to get our food. We made reservations because we were going to a show afterwards. We went back to the hostess stand & asked how much long. The young lady said she could seat us now. We were seated w/3 other people. We only ordered sushi because we knew the food wouldn’t be ready in time. We enjoyed our sushi.
This was my first time at Benihana Bethesda and I thought the food, service and ambience were all very good.
Great like usual... seated around 7:40pm... reservations at 7:30p
Food was terrific but too often, the wait staff is sub par- very slow, fail to come and check on you, fail to notice you need your white rice, more water, refill on beverage, the check, etc. It really ruins an otherwise pleasurable experience.
The chef performance was terrible. He didn’t do 80 % of the tricks we normally see. And we had 2 birthdays with us and we informed the staff but we didn’t get a song or anything.
Wow !!! I have been to several Benihana this is the worst location in Bethesda . It first started with the hostess trying to seat me and my husband to a table that six people already and it was no room to even out our drinks . I kindly asked to be moved to a new table which she did so new table new waitress. I’m not sure if she was new or overwhelmed that night but she was terrible all the tables that had her as a waitress complained and some people even left . Thank you Benihana for the Birthday coupon I will never return to this location.
We were seated promptly with our confirmed reservation. The waitress was very attentive and responsive. Our Chef was fantastic, as was the food.
Had great service - our cook Mauro was amazing! Food was perfectly cooked, very attentive!
While Benihana is still good, it's not what it used to be.
I was unimpressed! It took almost an hour for a chef to come to our table to begin preparing the food. Our waitress came by twice and we had to flag her down. The chef was speaking so low and was so unentertaining. I was very disappointed.
We had a 7PM reservation, earliest available when we made it at 4:30 PM the same afternoon. Arrived at the restaurant at 7:00 PM sharp. Paid for 1:45 at parking meter. Were seated at 7:05. Waitress had 2 other tables she was working. Rarely saw her during our visit. Chef didn't arrive at our table until 8:00. Not sure if the chefs at this location were all new, but it was pretty clear - based on many visits to similar establishments over the years - that the chefs were incredibly slow. No show with any of these guys. Not that we minded, but I found that very unusual for a place like this. The most important reason we come here was the food - and it was delicious. The other components of a visit to a restaurant are important of course, but at the end of the day, it's about the food. We were very satisfied with that aspect of the visit.
My favorite resturant, I love the onion soup and salad, tender shrimp, juicy steak, sauces, best fried rice, and kind and funny server and cook. I enjoyed thier new drink specials. I go every year for my birthday and for a great meal!
I took my daughter and her friends to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. The restaurant was accommodating to my daughter who ordered no vegetables. The chef made the fried rice with no vegetables for her and added the vegetables in for the rest of the table. However, we never received our salad. And at the end of the meal, the waitress asked the two who ordered the kid’s meal for their ice cream order, she did not ask the rest of the party if they wanted dessert. I had to order it after the ice creams arrived at the table. My daughter liked that they sang happy birthday, but not sure about the dancing part. Overall, it was a good meal experience.
Cook and the waiter were great. Food over priced especially $4 for fried rice.
We loved our first experience at Benihana, can’t wait to go back! From the moment we walked in to the moment we were walking out, great experience. Loved the food and drinks that we had. Our cook Luis was awesome, friendly and cooked delicious food!
Benihana is such a nostalgia celebration place. But they are really dialing it in. Running 30 minutes over even for reservations. Only about half the chefs showed up. Ran out of hat menus. Our chef was clearly new — rice all over the place, cleaning the grill while food was still on it, no jokes.
They changed the recipe for the yum yum sauce it is like an orange colored Ranch dressing, so terribly gross! The hostess had to be our server they were completely under staffed. Not the usual Benihana experience I was expecting at all.
Good food. Steak lobster is awesome. Only bad thing is service is lacking. Dont knowing they dont have enough staff but it's slow and poor service
Consistently good food and entertainment
