Bencotto Italian Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
I'm somewhat familiar with the Little Italy area of San Diego, but had not been to Bencotto previously. My party of 8 picked a few appetizers from the menu to start along with two selections from their wine list. The group enjoyed the appetizers greatly and they were prepared very well. The team picked a cross-section from the Dinner menu and each item was done quite well. We closed out the evening with a selection from the desert menu and again, the preparation was excellent and very positively received.
Overall, the menu is diverse, the staff very attentive and the cost was well within reason. The location is excellent and the vibe of the restaurant is fun. I believe each one of us will gladly return in the future.
We went on New Years Eve so the menu was limited but I was not told that until the day before with the confirmation call. Everything on the menu was "mushroom " When dining with younger adults they had little to no choices. We asked if they could order a simple spaghetti or fettuccine and the server said he would ask but never returned to let us know. We ordered 2 appetizer's, one was very small and extremely overpriced and we never even got the second one. We ordered non- alcoholic daiquiris for the minors at the table and were brought pomegranate juice with sprite, instead of simply telling us they did not make them. The portions were very small for what we paid. Overall, extremely disappointed.
New to Little Italy in San Diego, finding Bencotto was like finding treasure. I make my own pasta at home, once you've had it, boxed pasta is meh... This is the real deal. We both ended up having the pasta bolognese. It was superb, as good as a trip to Italy. The pasta was fresh, just like I make at home. The bolognese sauce was rich and meaty. We topped this off with a nice bottle of Tuscan Sangiovese. We will definitely be back on our next trip to SD.
I had been anticipating my visit to this restaurant. I must say the pasta I had was pretty good, pesto with fettuccine and meatballs. The server was very good. Those are the plus +.
The minus was not having enough drinking water, and/or the refills not coming quick enough, the seating arrangement is terrible, the chairs are uncomfortable and the arrangement of the tables did not impress me. The tables are so small there is no space to place your purse or coat. Our table was wobbly. Luckily the server was able to sort of fix it. But honestly for the prices they charge I was disappointed . Ambiance is very important to me and this place lacked.
Bencotto is amazing; we were so glad we chose to eat at this restaurant. The handmade pasta was delicious; light and airy. Having returned from Italy a few weeks ago, we were amazed at how authentic and tasty the food was. We had the spinach ravioli with arrabiatta sauce and the eggplant small plate to share and both were delicious! If we return to San Diego in the future, we will definitely be eating here again!
Aside from the food, the restaurant is cozy and moderately loud; it's perfect for a date night. The staff is kind and helpful. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the area.
Been to Bencotto a few times now and absolutley love the place. We were able to get a reservation last minute on Open Table and seated right away. We were greeted with a great wine list. They have the different pastas on display to make sure you pick your favorite noodle preference!
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Bencotto before a late night flight home. We arrived at the restaurant a half-hour in advance of our reservation, dragging two large pieces of luggage. The maitre d' was so kind, inviting us to leave our luggage at her podium so she could watch it for us, moving tables around to accommodate our early arrival, and wishing us a happy anniversary. This person is a gem - I hope the restaurant knows it.
We both had pasta, each with a heavy, rich sauce, and it was delicious.
I enjoyed seeing so many different types of parties there - from parents with small children, to large families, to Saturday night dates. When we departed, there was a very long line of people without reservations; I overheard that the wait was 1-1/2 hours.
Popularity is earned.
When we ordered our ride back to the airport, a different restaurant employee - perhaps a second maitre d' or manager - picked up our luggage and loaded it into the car. Another gem.
We lived in San Diego for 10 years and were never enthralled with the food scene. Now that we've moved, it seems to be improving, in Little Italy at least. Bencotto is a keeper.
We enjoyed the food and the service - all in all, it was a lovely anniversary dinner.
Took a special lady for a date here and had an amazing time. The food was excellent and the wine was great. We sat outdoors and the table was a lil shaky , and a couple derelict passerbys tambling nonsense (which is probably not typical) but overall the experience was great.
It was just okay. We were seated upstairs which felt closed in and kinda out of the action. Downstairs is much prettier and open feeling. The food wasn’t bad but not amazing. Our first courses which we’re zucchini blossoms and an asparagus soufflé were tasty but cold. For our main, the pasta portions were huge but i would rather have smaller portions but better tasting and higher quality. On the other hand, they were weirdly stingy with the olive oil for the bread. We ran out and when i asked for more, the waiter poured the tiniest amount for us. Overall, it wasn’t bad but I’m not running back!
