Bencotto Italian Kitchen
Bencotto offers 100% honest Northern Italian cuisine.
We are proud to offer 15 kinds of different hand-made pasta, fresh and hand-crafted 12 hours a day.
"Bencotto" means cooked well: this is what authentic Italian food is about.
Our menu is based on simplicity. It tastes as it should and would in Italy.
Bencotto offers two different eating environments: guests can either enjoy their meal at our “kitchen-esque” bar downstairs, or they can relax in the intimate low-ceiling dining area upstairs. The décor creates a clean and sophisticated atmosphere, where old-world charm and warmth blend with contemporary appeal.
The food and service was excellent. The Noise level was a little loud had trouble hearing my friends at the table. I do feel the could have one or two less tables it would make for a better feel.
The food was fresh and good. However, we got seated in a corner, next to the kitchen. The tables are barely a foot apart and we sat next to the loudest human ever. It is definitely not the place to go if you want to have a quiet, private conversation with anyone. The loud guy was out of the restaurant's control, but they definitely could work on doing something to improve the sound level. And work on the seating!
Diner with the family, my daughters love pasta, this is our second time dining here. The summer sauce is delish. The ravioli filled with crab is to die for.
Very accommodating staff. The food is fantastic. The pasta, meat dishes, sea food, are delicious.
Great service and food quality
Vacation dinner with son, aspiring chef.
Tasteless food as all you could taste was the pasta.
The biggest complaint is the quality of two of our dinners. Both were the shrimp served over noodles in a Parmesan Bowl. We should’ve taken pictures and returned for replacement dinners. The two shrimp on top were so dried up, it was impossible to get any meat out of it (if there was any). The two consuming the dinner inquired with the waitress how one could eat the shrimp. She tried to say use a fork and dig it out, but I think she could even see how petrified it was (yes, they were literally petrified). It would’ve been a good time for the waitress to ask if she could bring replacement entrees. It was obvious one of the restaurant guest was not a happy camper, the waitress apologized and asked if she could get her a glass of wine. It was a nice gesture, but the upset guest was charged for it so it added to the frustration. The other four dinners were okay, but the gnocchi serving was very small and the guest was not exactly full. We had our expectations set high as the ratings were good, but very disappointed. It was also very noisy and a little congested, but that too would’ve been okay if the meals were all edible. Each couple spent over $100 for their meals and the value of the dinner was not there. We spent much less the following night and it was much better than the Bencotto. I am sorry to give such a bad review, but thought you should know. Thank you for listening.
Il nostro pranzo è stato meraviglioso!
We've eaten here twice and the food is wonderful. The pasta is made fresh on site. Delicious food. Would definitely recommend.
We were visiting from out of town and selected restaurant based on reviews. We ordered salami and cheese, caesar salads and pasta with pesto and marinara sauces. The cheese was ok as was salami but I have had better just from grocery store. Caesar was your average caesar - not much flavor. The pasta was fusilli and served with 2 bowls of sauce. The pesto which I make at home all the time lacked flavor and body. I make mine mixing in the parmesan. This was just basil and some oil. I couldn’t taste any garlic. Again very ho hum and bland. My husband liked the marinara. Bread served before dinner was highlight as was wine selection . The waitress was pleasant and service prompt. I did not like industrial interior, lighting or techno music. We are not millennials so it had no appeal. Overall I did not understand the high rating. There are noodle chains that do just as well for much lower price tag.
The food was outstanding. If you’re looking for pasta there is no better place to be than here. You won’t regret it
Wonderful food! Good service and valet
Nice vibe inside.
Great food! All plates were delicious and well served
Amazing food and service
This place was exactly what we were looking for. The menus was simple but appetizing. I would definitely go back and try different dishes.
Went there for my friend's birthday dinner on a Saturday night. They're prompt, seated us earlier than our reservation, attentive and explained their menu and specials to newcomers. The food is also great!
Loved this restaurant! San Diego does italian "ok" and I had been looking for a quality restaurant. Bencotto is it. We tried other places but Bencotto blows them out of the water. The service is on point and the food was absolutely top notch. I will be going back again soon. Thank you for being one of the only great Italian Restaurants in San Diego!
Homemade pasta with lamb sauce was perfect. White wine recommendation with Fegatelli Tartufo was delicious and spot on. The ultimate compliment? We’re definitely go back.
We couldn’t hear each other speak without yelling. Very uncomfortable and cold temperature wise.
Excellent food, drinks and service. Made sure to come back on this trip
Having made our reservation a couple of weeks in advance, I would have expected a better table. Granted, we were 5 minutes late arriving, but I did call and advise them we would be a few minutes late. Seating a party of 4 upstairs, next to 2 parties of 15 or so loud rah rah conventioneers doesn’t make for a great experience.
Our server, Daniel, started out wonderfully. However, once our wine was poured (no ice bucket for a Pinot Grigio?) and our salads arrived, Daniel was a goner. Bread basket, empty. S & P.....none. Parmesan cheese? None. This is an Italian restaurant folks!
I will say our food was great, but the rest of the evening left us wondering if we would return!
Food was amazing!! The hostess was very friendly and acknowledged we were celebrating a birthday, but our waitress didn’t. Water refills could have been more frequent. Otherwise a great time, and delicious meal! Will be back.
Service was excellent as always, the food was great, and the ambiance was relaxed.
Food and services was amazing. Sergio was attentive and recommended some good things. I appreciated that they remembered my friends birthday on my side note. We stayed a bit longer to talk and we didn't feel rushed off. I really appreciated that. They also switched last minute reservation times, which was very accommodating. I will be back.
This was such a great spot for a birthday dinner! We were seated upstairs and got drinks and bread quickly. We both ordered from the "build your own pasta" section and it was definitely the right choice- the pasta was perfect and the sauces were AMAZING.
Our server didn't bring us our caprese salad before our entrees but immediately comped it once we asked about it, so no points off there. Overall, amazing and we're excited for the next time we're in San Diego so we can go back!
It was fine. We enjoyed it but probably would not come back because they food wasn’t to die for delicious, just standard delicious. Maybe I was expecting too much!
The restaurant was very clean and had a nice ambiance. The apps came out and were well plated and had good flavor. We ordered a salad and a entree to be split between my wife and myself. They came out before our apps were finished and they were not split up. The cesar salad was very good with appropriate flavor. The lasagna bolognese was underwhelming. It lacked flavor and rustic flare. For the price we expected more.
We made reservations weeks in advance of our dinner. It just happened to be Valentine's Day. It was also our 26th anniversary. In my reservation request I asked for a quiet, romantic table for two. We were placed at a table at the top of the stairs in the upper level dining area. This does not qualify as a quiet location in the least, as all the servers had to come up the stairs right next to our table and go around our chairs every time they came upstairs, which was a lot! Disappointing! Additionally I was told the menu would be both the regular menu and a special Valentine's menu. I clarified this a couple of times. When we were seated, we were told the menu was only a special one. Again disappointing! There were a number of items that we would much rather have had from the regular menu when viewed online. In addition the prices are certainly not usual & seemed to be higher than what I saw online! I get it that Valentine's Day is a busy night for most good restaurants and an opportunity to have a good night, particularly on a Wednesday. I also get that the servers and support staff were hustling. But the restaurant should know of these issues however small. It did not make for a fun event for myself and my husband.
Food was exquisite. Everything was perfect...service, food, atmosphere.
Great Food. Girlfriend and I went the day before Valentine's Day. Place was busy, but the service was great. Drinks were always full, and staff was very attentive. Would go again.
Another amazing experience at Bencotto! Great food, great service and jessie is the man!
The place was freezing, the floor is simply the building's foundation. Too "downtown". I wanted a more cozy place for the money. Got seated right up against the window and we were wet and cold from the rain. The food was great but they need to not sink the balsamic vinegar in the bottom of a vat of oil. That's not how its done. You put it on a plate. I had oil bread. Nasty. I expected more from this place. Cold dungeon is what it really is.
Delicious and authentic regional Italian food. Service speed more American than European. Pleasant atmosphere.
Not as good as it used to be...lasagna excellent, pesto is overly salty, cioppino was meh. Eggplant appetizer horribly overpriced (or ridiculously small), pretty sure that was $0.50 of ingredients for $14. Each person had one small bite, we’d have needed 3 more to make it an appetizer. Bread also just meh.
A sophisticated, contemporary space with attentive, professional wait staff serving authentic Italian dishes. We ordered the Fagottini al Tartufo (special of the day) and the Tagliatelle ai Formaggi - both were excellent.
Still my favorite little italy spot. Busy but relatively quiet upstairs. Great service, great food. Love this place.
Tonight was a miss - we were there for my birthday and the staff was way overloaded. Food was still the HIGH quality I expected but no bread, no service. I left a big disappointed but totally shocked when I got a call 10 minutes later asking us to return for champagne and dessert - we’d left so they offered a gift card. It was a great gesture and way more the service level I expect from this great restaurant!
The place is phenomenal. Such a great menu. The cheese plate. The “pick your pasta” The minimalist atmosphere. It is a wonderful place to eat.
Delicious food! Everything we had was amazing. Huge portions and nice ambiance. Only downside was service was a bit slow and despite having a reservation it took a while to get waited on. Would definitely return.
