Between the '20s & '40s, the space that now occupies Benchmark was used as an icehouse and major way station for goods that that arrived on the banks of the Gowanas Canal. While excavating, several "benchmarks" (surveyor's marks) were found, along with architects' tools, some of which are displayed on the restaurant's walls. Benchmark's rich history and naturally rustic interior is enhanced by warm exposed brick, arched windows and spacious garden seating.
My second visit to Benchmark was even better than the first! We were warmly greeted as we entered, our waiter was amazingly attentive and the food was outstanding!
What a nice surprise! I've been eating in Park Slope for several years and only came across Benchmark recently- my loss. Our family each had a different entree and each one was good. The scallop appetizer could be expanded into an entree. A very enjoyable evening.
Table was ready when we arrived, great service and the food was excellent. Highly recommend.
I mean what can I say- we went for brunch with two kids. (Ps - I get that no one feels like waiting on kids at brunch - but it's park slope so it kind of comes with the territory.) Had a reservation. Our section had two other tables seated when we arrived. Two other tables sat after us. It took about 15 minutes for someone to come take out order - which honestly we should have just left at that point because we had kids with us - so that's on us. The food came out about 40 minutes after we ordered. which if you have kids then you know that this is basically unbearable. By the time we got our food, one of the tables seated after us was already finished eating and one of the tables seated before us was still waiting. Got a BS apology about how the kitchen was slow. The food was fine. Not bad not great but fine. Unfortunate experience all in all, could have caught them on a bad day I guess. But sadly won't be back.
Great food, great ambiance for a romantic date night
This was not my first time to benchmark. I love the food, and it was outstanding as usual. Unfortunately our experience was not great because of the service. Our waitress took our order quickly and brought our drinks..... and disappeared. People were being seated and brought a bread basket, and we sat there for 40 minutes... nursing our one drink until our food came. Service picked up a little... we ate.... were considering getting another drink.... and no one came or paid attention to us for another 32 minutes. There was one waitress in the room constantly texting on her phone and not looking up. We got our check... left a minimal tip, around 11/12%, which was undeserved. Again, the food was great, but a good night was ruined by the service.
Food was good, not amazing. My first impression was how harried the staff was. Everyone seemed unhappy and impatient. Felt, upon entering the restaurant, that we were an inconvenience. It may be that someone called in sick but, as a customer, it was not welcoming. Once we settled at our table, we enjoyed the meal.
Might recommend, but not strongly...
Great experience and the service was amazing and pleasant. Got us out for a concert.
My girlfriend and I have been here many times before. There seemed to be one waitress for the entire backroom so it was understandable that we had to wait a little to get our order. My steak was great but hers was partially overcooked. Ordered a medium rare and it came out more medium - well. This was slightly disappointing but the staff was great and took part of it off the tab. Good recovery.
Normally the food is on point and we will definitely come back again.
The staff at Benchmark are incredibly joyful and friendly. From the greeting to the goodbye, each staff member we came in contact with was so pleasant.
The decor is incredible; intimate yet lively. The food, simple...yet so delicious.
Everything went very well at Benchmark except for one little hiccup. Now, on a busy Saturday night, I perfectly understand that the staff can make a mistake...like forgetting to send out the appetizer. The important thing is that when we respectfully let them know, they graciously offered two solutions, 1) take it off the bill, 2) send it out...better late than never. We wanted to try the appetizer so even though we had eaten the main course we asked to send it. It was delicious.
It was still taken off the bill by the staff without me requesting it to be. Benchmark is a great place for fine food with very friendly staff...who in the inevitable event of a small error (we are all human) remain calm, cordial, and professional.
At the time of the reservation, i had no idea that the seating would actually be outside the main restaurant under a tent and since we had a 2 year old with us and it was a cold night, it was not a good start. Perhaps this bit of information should be explained in the web site. Besides that the service and the food were great.
Visiting Brooklyn from out of town and found Benchmark on OT. Cute small restaurant with outdoor space covered by a heated tent. Food was excellent. The venison with espresso rub and cabbage was unique and delicious. Also enjoyed the bone in rib eye and salmon. Scallops appetizer was a little weak. Only issue we had was very disorganized service. Our server was friendly enough but the apps took a long time and our meal sides did not arrive until after we finished our entrees. Not sure why it took another 20 minutes to cook Brussels sprouts and spinach after we notified our server they were missing. She was on her phone half the time instead of attending to us. May have been an off night because everything else was fine
I don't understand why there weren't more people eating there - the food is excellent and the service is the perfect level of attentive. Oh, please also have the strawberry donuts as an appetizer, you will not be disappointed.
Great food, friendly, attentive service! Wonderful experience!
We went for an very late lunch on President's Day. The restaurant was mostly empty (I love going out to eat at offpeak times). The service was phenomenal. The meatloaf was absolutely amazing (and huge) and my husband loved his burger. We also started with the short ribs which were equally amazing and totally melted in your month. Will be returning ASAP.
Heard wonderful things about Benchmark's brunch so a few friends and myself decided to try it. We were not disappointed. The menu was extensive. We all had something different and we were all very pleased with our selection. The food was delicious...very well prepared. The decor is lovely and the service was outstanding. Thank you Benchmark...we will be back!
The food was fabulous from start to finish. Unfortunately as first time visitors, we did not have the opportunity to choose from the regular dinner menu for Valentine's Day (pre-fixe only). Bummer. I had the butter poached Alaskan King crab risotto, the pan-seared duck breast and the strawberry almond crumble. All AMAZING! I will definitely return to try other dishes.
One of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Honestly and I’m a sucker for steaks. I go all over NYC and make sure I try the best steak houses. The filet mignon was fantastic and cooked to perfection. Absolutely will be back.
Got a 3-course pre-fixe for Valentine's day. Each course was delicious, food came out right after the prior course, and the service was prompt. Will return.
Our first visit. The food was thoughtfully and carefully created. Everything was very fresh. Comfortable casual setting. Excellent service. We will be back
Went to take advantage of the last evening of NYC Restaurant Week. The service was lovely and the employees are all fantastic. The food was just okay. The shrimp and grits with tomato vinaigrette barely had any vinaigrette and was topped with a mound of undressed arugula. There was maybe two tablespoons of grits. The beet and burrata salad was mostly beets and the avocado was brown. As far as mains, the butternut squash was cooked perfectly but was completely un-sauced (we ended up finding a few drops of balsamic reduction under it) and the filet Mignon came with a Demi glacé that was so over reduced it was glued to the plate. The desserts were delicious but came with almost completely melted gelato! We also never got our bread, which we asked for 3 times. Ended up longingly watching everyone else eat their bread!
Everything about this place was amazing. Highly recommend- you will not regret going!
Came here for NYC Restaurant Week. The food was incredible, best steak I've had in a long while, cooked to perfection. The cookie dough eggrolls were amazing! Extensive wine list... we ended up with a nice Sancerre. Service was great... Very friendly and happy to offer suggestions. Definitely coming back again!
The sea scallop appetizer was delicious. The risotto was outstanding.
My rib eye was perfectly cooked. A little too much visible fat, but delicious. My only complaint is I left pieces of grizzle on the edges of my plate for my animals and I guess I wasn't clear about including those pieces with the leftovers.
This was the second time I visited this restaurant and again I was not disappointed. The food was excellent, atmosphere quaint and cozy, the service was great. I will travel.from the bronx to Benchmark again and again!
A great surprise. Visited Benchmark by chance and thought it was an incredible find. Great food, impeccable service, impressive wine list and a very chic space. Highly recommended.
Good food and service , selection for non meat eaters a little limiting
Restaurant week but we upgraded to the Porterhouse option. Wonderfull.
Came for restaurant week. Great service & lovely, cozy ambience. Food was good too!
We took advantage of Restaurant Week to enjoy dinner at Benchmark. We had a great time, the food was delicious, and would likely return here for another dinner outside of Restaurant Week. I will say that as far as the seating goes, the tables are a little too close together.
My husband and I love to explore different places and cuisines. Given my allergies and diet restrictions...we had a lovely waiter who was a pleasant person who pleased our palates with good suggestions whereby we enjoyed our individual dishes (My Spicy Lobster Salad hearts of palm, banana guacamole with coconut dressing & New York Strip, creamed spinach & mashed potatoes), desserts (Bourbon & Espresso gelato), and drinks (Pinot Grigio & Big Kahuna Bourbon). It was a lovely lunch and we will return.
Sat at the bar and enjoyed dinner for one. Started with a cocktail that had Mezcal and Scotch I believe and I was a huge fan! I had originally planned to order from the Restaurant Week pre-fixe, as that was what initially brought my attention to Benchmark, but instead I ordered the Seared Sea Scallops, Grass-Fed Filet Mignon, and the Charred Brussels Sprouts.
The scallops were definitely the highlight in my opinion, even though my mouth was watering for the filet. The scallops were perfectly cooked, the prosciutto added a delightful texture and saltiness, and the risotto added extra richness. Could eat that dish everyday. Filet was wonderful too, but almost a bit too charred on the edges for my liking. The marrow was literally like butter, but better, so yummy! Also loved the potato gratin! And even though I love Brussels sprouts, I felt theirs was a bit forgettable unfortunately.
The bartender recommended the Zinfandel with the steak and it was phenomenal! I rounded dinner out with their bread pudding which was absolutely delightful.
Overall, I would definitely return to Benchmark to try out some other dishes based on service and flavors that they incorporate in their dishes!
We came for restaurant week and had a fantastic meal, trying a variety of the offerings. The service and ambiance was lovely. Would definitely visit them again!
Food was slow to come. Server was very nice and helpful. The seating was cramped
The price of wine is high for the wines has there so no deserve to much. The meat is very good and the heater is very uncomfortable
The food was mediocre apart from the steak. I had salmon which was very poor. My daughter ordered a hamburger well done and it came out essentially burnt. I would not order anything other than steak outside the food is average at best.
Went here for the first time for Restaurant Week. Had the short ribs appetizer, the blackened cod entree, and gelato for dessert and they were all absolutely delicious! The waiter was very attentive and friendly as well. Can't wait to go back...
We had a great time. Our serve was excellent and provided us with a time to remember
Steak is always good. It’s our neighborhood “go to “ when we want a steak.
The bathroom was out of order so we went to their bar next door. A nuisance but not a game changer.
Great for a date guys
