Between the '20s & '40s, the space that now occupies Benchmark was used as an icehouse and major way station for goods that that arrived on the banks of the Gowanas Canal. While excavating, several "benchmarks" (surveyor's marks) were found, along with architects' tools, some of which are displayed on the restaurant's walls. Benchmark's rich history and naturally rustic interior is enhanced by warm exposed brick, arched windows and spacious garden seating.
Great food, great service, overall a great restaurant
I enjoyed my appetizer foie grasse. My entree rib eye was ok. It was charred and medium rare which was cook the way I want it, however it’s not prime grade.
Brought 7 for thanksgiving meal. For a 2019 menu in Brooklyn, a surprising and disappointing lack of non-pork & non-dairy options or ability to substitute.
Always great food!
The menu was quite good though I would like to see vegetables with the mains instead of carbs, but that is NY.
The meats were excellent though myself & my friend felt the chef could have backed off on the salt a tad.
Really was a good meal all in all & the service was hands above what I have been seeing lately.
I will definitely be going back to Benchmark.
My only complaint is the limited menu. No chicken dish available.
Amazing food and service. The quality of food you get for the price is spectacular. Also our waiter was so sweet and helpful. One of my favorite restaurants hands down.
One of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood. From the food to the service, it never disappoints. The steak is always cooked perfectly and the seasonal menu of other entrees is also very good! A must if you’re coming to Park Slope.
Steak was tough and grisly. Sides were ok at best. Dessert was good. Wine selection good with reasonable prices.
It was delicious! I would recommend it to anyone and hope to dine there the next time I’m visiting.
Oir server was the least bit accommodating. Her lack luster service in addition to her in attention to detail overall highlighted the NEGATIVE effects of my birthday dinner....
The environment was nice and casual. It wasn’t too loud. The filet mignon was deliciously prepared, although oddly cut in half, which I haven’t seen before with steak and found it rather odd. The potato dishes, especially the potato and goat cheese purée was good and the pesto was a nice touch with the bone marrow. I did wish the Brussels sprouts were more crispy. The only disappointing dish was the duck confit stater which was mostly lettuce and bacon, almost no duck at all, topped with an egg. It was fine, but not at all how it was presented on the menu. All and all I’d definitely go back for the steak dishes.
I've been to Benchmark for brunch on several occasions and they never disappoint. The menu has plenty of appetizing options to choose from, the cocktails are your standard brunch options.
This was my first time sitting outside and that was also very nice. I would recommend Benchmark for a casual brunch with friends.
Also to note - the outdoor area is stroller-friendly.
Lemon ricotta pancakes are amazing for brunch. Went back a 2nd weekend. Omelettes are great too. Great outdoor space!
The food and service were excellent. Sitting outside, the table setup felt a bit cheap. Would prefer to dine inside, where I did once before.
We sat for 30 minutes and no one would take our order. Very strange. We got up and left.
Awesome! Great food!
My husband love it here! Best steaks in Brooklyn. Always great service.
Solid. Good place for kids.
First of all this isnt the first time that we have visited benchmark. The benchmark has significantly lowered. We arrived at 730p for dinner which we were celebrating a birthday. We ordered 2 lobster bisques
Scallops and duck confit. All of these dishes were missing an element that was described on the menu. I had the lobster bisque which didnt even taste like lobster and had NO lobster in it. Previously when we visited there was at least some lobster on the top. Very dissatisfied. The duck confit never came for appetizers and the waitress then brought it out with dinner. When i told her that we ordered it for apps she said blamed us and said its because we ordered it late? And then said they ran out and had to get more? Where was this communication.
Anyways our dinners came out messed up as well and had no flavor. Honestly a waste of 250 dollars. We could have went anywhere in thr slope for better service! Ruined our bday celebration.
Porterhouse for 2
Mac and cheese
My husband ordered wine which took 45 mins to get.
The waitress knew we were upset and pretty much ignored us for the rest of the night. We watched her check on every other table to see if they needed anything except us. I asked for the check and she puts it down with no apology and says I took off 30 for the wait. Too little too late.
YOU NEED TO DO BETTER! This is the worst experience we have had in a long time and we eat out almost everyday.
We love Benchmark and eat here often, however the service on our last visit was awful. The entire restaurant was served before we were. We appreciated our server comping our wine, but the mess up shouldn't have happened.
We will of course, be back. Love you guys anyway.
Excellent rib eye, generous and well prepared. Ahi tuna was also excellent, cooked to perfection. The staff as always accommodated my husband's low sodium needs. Friendly and attentive service. Low key and attractive surroundings. We'll be be back!
Lovely place, good food. It was a special occasion and we were given complimentary glasses of champagne when we sat down. Very nice! Food was great and for the most part the service was good, although our main waitperson seemed to disappear for long periods of time and it was hard to find her. In the interim another waitperson was always around and took our second drink orders, request for salt, the check, etc. I'll go back in any case.
The service slow. but overall the restaurant was very good.
This might be the worst food I’ve ever had at a restaurant. Including the drinks. We ordered starters, entrees and cocktails and none was edible. The service was less than okay as well. Unfortunately I will never go back and feel it’s my duty to advise you all against going.
Great restaurant. Attention to detail. Fantastic service. And a really admirable wine list. Highly recommend this gem in Park Slope.
Delicious brunch with great service. Will go back!
While we have been there several times since it opened, this is the second time we have eaten at Benchmark in the past month and on both occasions we had a lovely time. We took my mother-in-law there her birthday and then we took our son for a celebratory dinner. Both times the service was warm and attentive without being overbearing, the room wasn't too loud so we could have a conversation without having to shout and, of course, the food was superb. Both times we had the Trio of Beef appetizer, which is fantastic and great for sharing. We also had the scallops, which was so good I was tempted to lick the plate. My husband and I shared the bone-in rib eye and my son had the filet. We were all happy with our selections. The home cut fries and brussel sprouts are super delish and the homemade ketchup is a nice touch. I am happy we have rediscovered this local gem and look forward to going back soon.
Ordered the fish Mahi on the Restaurant Week deal & it was a major disappointment. Small, thin, overcooked. What a waste.
The steaks were great the others had.
The service was awesome. Staff were pleasant. Very knowledgeable of the food questions we had asked. Rib eye steak, filet mignon, pan seared tuna and signature burger entrees were delicious.
Restaurant Week lunch menu was 2 course choice of excellence. For appetizer I had the crab cake and my companion had the steak & tomato dish. Both were flavorful and generously portioned. For entree, I had the NY strip with whipped potatoes and spinach in cream sauce. My companion had the salmon topped with roe. Everything was fresh, perfectly cooked, and well seasoned. Over the years, this restaurant continues to be a hidden gem. Fun fact- my first Brooklyn restaurant week trip was to this spot, over 5 years ago! Still great.
The restaurant week menu was awesome! We sat outside on a lovely evening and had a great time.
The starter dishes we had were wonderful--the seared scallops were perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the lobster bisque had some sweet corn. The steaks were great, tho one had some fatty sections that had to be trimmed. We had a side of creamed spinach that was too creamy for our taste; we usually have the roasted brussel sprouts, which are typically excellent.
My gf and I went for NY Restaurant week and we automatically went for the patio seating. We had a good time and enjoyed the food as well. Perfect for groups and date nights for the NY summer vibes
We gave them a try because they were participating in Restaurant Week and we were not disappointed! The prix fixed menu selections all sounded good and the choices we made were delicious! The staff was attentive and cheerful. We will definitely come back again.
This was our 2nd time at benchmark and we loved it!
The service was excellent. The menu was diverse, food was well prepared and delicious. It was a good value and a very enjoyable dining experience. We felt very welcome there.
Every thing basically was excellent in this historical place. The displays on the wall matched the name and background of this restaurant; the waiter, David, was extremely nice and patient to us; the price was very reasonable; the wet aged steak was amazingly tender and juicy. The only suggestion is the crab cake, there was too much flour in it, the real crab meat was hardly seen, so it was tasted like a seasoned dough.
Went for brunch. Food and drinks were great. Service was kind of all over the place.
We made a reservation on OpenTable for inside at 1:30pm. We arrive at 1:25, and the hostess says their system doesn’t indicate the mandatory inside/outside choice from the app. There’s nothing available inside for 10 minutes and wants to seat us outside (it’s 90 degrees) next to a party of 18 who are super loud. I say we’ll wait.
We stand at the bar which is just inside the hostess station door where the bartender serves us the drinks we order. We are also close packed enough to hear the waiter come read the hostess for filth about how she’s seating people wrong and nobody is getting served correctly, which shouldn’t be done in earshot of customers. The whole time we are waiting there are 2 separating 4 tops and a 2 top free. After 20 minutes waiting I ask the hostess if we can have that obviously empty 2 top. She says it’s reserved, and we should have made a reservation. We DID. She still keeps us waiting 45 minutes total before giving us that 2 top. At this point we’re ravenous, and my husband orders a coffee from her, which she promptly forgets. Then our server comes over and takes our orders. We over ordered because we were so hungry, but the food takes ages to come out. While waiting for our doughnut app, a family of 3 is seated and served their burgers which they ordered after sitting down. Obviously the kitchen is having firing issues too. Next is a peach and burrata salad and a melon-coconut gazpacho. The soup is inedible unpleasant due to overkill on jalapeño oil that kills every other flavor in the soup but the grittiness of the coconut, and the peaches weren’t ripe so they were hard and tasteless. Finally we have mains, a short rib Benedict which was fine, but the egg hadn’t been drained before going on the muffin so the muffin was water wet, but the short rib was well prepared, and my husband’s bacon cheeseburger hash was burnt black with red stained grease pooling around it. The whole meal made us annoyed.
