Between the '20s & '40s, the space that now occupies Benchmark was used as an icehouse and major way station for goods that that arrived on the banks of the Gowanas Canal. While excavating, several "benchmarks" (surveyor's marks) were found, along with architects' tools, some of which are displayed on the restaurant's walls. Benchmark's rich history and naturally rustic interior is enhanced by warm exposed brick, arched windows and spacious garden seating.
Great staff very attention with good suggestions!
Amazing food. Only 1 waiter for lunch but he was so friendly and great with our orders.
Always love this restaurant ... best place to go in Park Slope for a variety of cuts of beef cooked perfectly with tons of flavor. Have had many dishes here and all are delicious.
Great Food and atmosphere. The outdoor patio and tented area would be a great place to sit and eat during a nice summer evening.
The service was terrible. This is the first time in my life they brought the bread out after the food, on Mother's Day!!!!!! Food is so so.
Everything was wonderful and our sever was fantastic. Great steak!!
Saturday evening before Mother's Day. You did not have enough staff to timely serve the number of diners. Our server did an admirable job but was always playing catch up, and was often running from the kitchen and literally out of breath when serving our table.
Twenty minutes to get a drink order. Another 20 to get the drinks. Appetizers even longer. Entrees felt like they took forever to come.
We had reservations and were seated immediately. Food was excellent when it finally came.
We're regulars who want to support local restaurants. We've had many good brunches and dinners at Benchmark. This was not a good experience.
Congrats on a thriving business. Please take better care of staffing to match the number of reservations and diners you are serving.
I went to Benchmark for my fiance's birthday. The place is very nice and I loved the ambiance. We ordered a bottle of wine and after the wine was poured we were told they were out of 3 of the 6 a la a carte steaks which is very annoying considering we went for steak. Anyway, I ordered the filet mignon and he ordered the bone-in rib eye. We ordered both medium. For a starter we shared the trio of short ribs which was fine. However, our steak was very over cooked. The was well done with an almost burnt outside. I have never had such a dry steak. But if I even put this aside, the service was poor and the waitress was rude. No one came to check in on us or refill our wine glasses as the night when on. The cookie dough egg roll is delicious but not worth me ever returning.
I should've taken the past reviews seriously about the bad service and burnt steak. I guess it's my fault for hoping I would have a better experience!
Delicious food and lovely staff.
Very hot and steamy inside
Excellent food, fairly priced, definitely will return
A large group of us had brunch at Benchmark and it could not have been a better experience. The restaurant accommodated 20 adults and 3 kids on a short notice. Not only were they flexible and provided great service, but the food was excellent - hats off to the chef! I would definitely go back for the food and the overall experience.
Love,love, love it!!!🥰
Very nice place with terrific service and food. Filet mignon was excellent.
Well let start off with we booked a indoor seat and it was loud and very crowded,so I ask to sit outdoor. Which was a ok experience if you don’t mind everyone walking past your table while you’re eating. The Service was Ok, our Server was very busy inside and it took for ever to get drinks The steak was overcooked but still delicious, over all not a bad place just needs more worker in my opinion.
Benchmark food is always delicioous and servers are wonderful... come here at least every other month
Appetizers and main courses were excellent. Service very pleasant. Restaurant is a bit crowded and tables are close together. Definitely not the place for a private conversation. It's a shame because the food is really good... the lamb special and the steaks were outstanding, the jambalaya and trio of ribs excellent but the cookie dough egg roll didn't really work well. I hope to return for more excellent cooking!
Lovely relaxed meal and the food was outstanding!
Friendly accommodating service. Food came quickly. We weren’t rushed.
The food and service were great. They need to reupholster their banquettes. It really detracts from the ambience and experience of sitting at that table.
The service and food was fantastic and a great wine list try the bread pudding and lobster bisque
Such a great place. Service is impeccable, drinks are very good, food is perfect 9 times out of 10.
First time I have had a so-so meal at Benchmark. Every other time I have been there has been great but this time was just meh. I had a cheesesteak omlet that had very little meat--and that was ground beef instead of sliced steak. My wife had an omlet that she said had no flavor. I will go back, but not for a while. I am thinking they had a new chef or someone substituting that day. Oh well, everyone has an off day every once in a while.
Maybe just an off night but the experience was terrible for our birthday dinner. Long wait time for food with no communication in between. Almost 1 hour for food to come out with a young child. No refills of water. Food was served cold.
They were gracious to send out birthday desserts but never apologized for the awful awful service and food.
The menu is great- I thought the portions was a little light though. The service was great, the decor was just fine. A bit bland.
My second visit to Benchmark was even better than the first! We were warmly greeted as we entered, our waiter was amazingly attentive and the food was outstanding!
What a nice surprise! I've been eating in Park Slope for several years and only came across Benchmark recently- my loss. Our family each had a different entree and each one was good. The scallop appetizer could be expanded into an entree. A very enjoyable evening.
Table was ready when we arrived, great service and the food was excellent. Highly recommend.
I mean what can I say- we went for brunch with two kids. (Ps - I get that no one feels like waiting on kids at brunch - but it's park slope so it kind of comes with the territory.) Had a reservation. Our section had two other tables seated when we arrived. Two other tables sat after us. It took about 15 minutes for someone to come take out order - which honestly we should have just left at that point because we had kids with us - so that's on us. The food came out about 40 minutes after we ordered. which if you have kids then you know that this is basically unbearable. By the time we got our food, one of the tables seated after us was already finished eating and one of the tables seated before us was still waiting. Got a BS apology about how the kitchen was slow. The food was fine. Not bad not great but fine. Unfortunate experience all in all, could have caught them on a bad day I guess. But sadly won't be back.
Great food, great ambiance for a romantic date night
This was not my first time to benchmark. I love the food, and it was outstanding as usual. Unfortunately our experience was not great because of the service. Our waitress took our order quickly and brought our drinks..... and disappeared. People were being seated and brought a bread basket, and we sat there for 40 minutes... nursing our one drink until our food came. Service picked up a little... we ate.... were considering getting another drink.... and no one came or paid attention to us for another 32 minutes. There was one waitress in the room constantly texting on her phone and not looking up. We got our check... left a minimal tip, around 11/12%, which was undeserved. Again, the food was great, but a good night was ruined by the service.
Food was good, not amazing. My first impression was how harried the staff was. Everyone seemed unhappy and impatient. Felt, upon entering the restaurant, that we were an inconvenience. It may be that someone called in sick but, as a customer, it was not welcoming. Once we settled at our table, we enjoyed the meal.
Might recommend, but not strongly...
Great experience and the service was amazing and pleasant. Got us out for a concert.
My girlfriend and I have been here many times before. There seemed to be one waitress for the entire backroom so it was understandable that we had to wait a little to get our order. My steak was great but hers was partially overcooked. Ordered a medium rare and it came out more medium - well. This was slightly disappointing but the staff was great and took part of it off the tab. Good recovery.
Normally the food is on point and we will definitely come back again.
The staff at Benchmark are incredibly joyful and friendly. From the greeting to the goodbye, each staff member we came in contact with was so pleasant.
The decor is incredible; intimate yet lively. The food, simple...yet so delicious.
Everything went very well at Benchmark except for one little hiccup. Now, on a busy Saturday night, I perfectly understand that the staff can make a mistake...like forgetting to send out the appetizer. The important thing is that when we respectfully let them know, they graciously offered two solutions, 1) take it off the bill, 2) send it out...better late than never. We wanted to try the appetizer so even though we had eaten the main course we asked to send it. It was delicious.
It was still taken off the bill by the staff without me requesting it to be. Benchmark is a great place for fine food with very friendly staff...who in the inevitable event of a small error (we are all human) remain calm, cordial, and professional.
At the time of the reservation, i had no idea that the seating would actually be outside the main restaurant under a tent and since we had a 2 year old with us and it was a cold night, it was not a good start. Perhaps this bit of information should be explained in the web site. Besides that the service and the food were great.
Visiting Brooklyn from out of town and found Benchmark on OT. Cute small restaurant with outdoor space covered by a heated tent. Food was excellent. The venison with espresso rub and cabbage was unique and delicious. Also enjoyed the bone in rib eye and salmon. Scallops appetizer was a little weak. Only issue we had was very disorganized service. Our server was friendly enough but the apps took a long time and our meal sides did not arrive until after we finished our entrees. Not sure why it took another 20 minutes to cook Brussels sprouts and spinach after we notified our server they were missing. She was on her phone half the time instead of attending to us. May have been an off night because everything else was fine
