Below The Radar Ratings and Reviews
We enjoyed an unhurried Sunday afternoon catching up with a high school classmate and his wife. Sandwiches were quite good (although they initially included cheese on one sandwich that had been ordered without), the variety of local craft beers was impressive, and we didn't feel we had overstayed our welcome after more than 2 hours. Very comfortable spot - we will visit again when in the Huntsville area!
Our family of 5 was visiting Huntsville and needed a family-friendly restaurant for dinner. While Below the Radar is definitely a bar/pub atmosphere, they allow kids, and the clientele seemed upscale enough that you can bring your kids without worrying that the people at the table next to you will be dropping F-bombs or getting so hammered they start making passes at your teenage daughter. But I digress. We started our dining experience by ordering a few appetizers -- 3 flavors of wings, and some fried mac-n-cheese balls. Our server was definitely new. She had to return to our table (no exaggeration) 3 times to ask us what we had ordered, instead of just writing it down. We could also tell by the way she carried drinks (very carefully, only a few at a time, a little shaky) that she was not an experienced server. Her inability to get our appetizer order correct resulted in our wings (which were delicious--highly recommend the Sesame Ginger, or the Sriracha Lime!) arriving just a few short minutes before our entree. This is a big pet peeve of mine. When you order appetizers, any good establishment should give you sufficient time to enjoy the appetizer and pre-bus the table before delivering entrees. This was obviously the fault of our rookie server, but it was frustrating. Especially since the apps were so tasty, and we didn't have much time to enjoy them. On the plus side, the entrees were incredibly good. From the filet, to the lamb chops with polenta (which was heavenly), and the burger with goat cheese and fried green tomato, everything was great. The only exception was the risotto that came with my daughter's steak. It was bland, flavorless, and had the consistency of paste, which, as a cook, I know is a flawed risotto. Beyond this one culinary misfire, the rest of the food hit the mark. It was excellent. I'd definitely return here on our next trip to Huntsville. But I might request a more experienced server.
Food was great! Service was good. A little slow but it was very crowded when we first arrived. Brunch menu was fanatastic! Highly recommend the polenta cake! Great beer selection as always. Had live music and although very talented was a bit loud for brunch but everyone seemed to enjoy it. Will definitely be back!
It was a gorgeous day so we opted to eat outside. The rough metal patio furniture snagged my skirt and destroyed my tights, so that was a bummer, but I can't knock the food! The salad was nicely plated and generous. No green egg yolks! The burger was not only delicious but perfectly cooked. Exceeded our expectations! Your chef deserves a raise. The server was a little over - attentive, even removing plates we hadn't used yet. Would have been nice to hear some music outside.
The room was so noisy because we had someone singing, kids screaming to the music, and people talking really load in order to be heard. We finally moved outside so we could talk. The noise was oppressive. Good thing the TV was not working.
While the food was good I think it was a bit pricey, but I guess it has to be since it is in the city. We will look for a quieter place to enjoy a Sunday afternoon lunch.
We made reservations our anniversary, the only available time was 4:45. My husband had to leave work early to get there on time , we arrived 5minutes early. Hostess was nice. Proceeded to sit there for 20 minutes without being acknowledged. We ended up leaving and had a nice dinner elsewhere.
Made reservations for Mother's Day. Below the Radar was able to accommodate my party of 8 for brunch. The management was prepared for the busy morning, as they had an army of wait staff tending to every customers needs. I have previously eaten here for dinner, and found the brunch to be a good value. Overall very satisfied with the experience and would definitely recommend this venue to anyone.
Not impressed with the food at all... Pork ordered by one of my party remained uneaten, Lamb had little flavor (possibly frozen too long?) Bangers and mash were acceptable, but would not get them again...
Overall, a disappointment in the food department.
Tables have little room between them to sit down without disturbing your neighbors, who, are close enough to eat with you.
The only impressive thing was the beer list.
Service was better than the food, and she gets credit for apologizing for the pork meal that was not eaten (and providing some compensation).
I would not recommend this as a restaurant. However, if you want a good beer, they got it.
Loved our experience! We were 45 minutes early for our reservation yet they still seated our party. Service was excellent, food was delicious, ambiance was wonderful! There was a guitar player/singer for Brunch that morning who was very talented and enjoyable. We will definitely have to return for another Brunch or just lunch or dinner. Highly recommend this gem of a restaurant to everyone!
The food the food the food. It was perfectly prepared and well composed. The dark atmosphere with bubbly conversation throughout was a nice back drop. The local brews were extremely fresh and the selection is HUGE. One could definitely start a Beer Ticking habit at BTR.
My only complaint is the waitress was lifeless and unknowledgeable. No passion for the job and could not recommend beers.
My husband wanted brunch, so he headed to the internet and found a list of places in Huntsville, AL that served it. I admit that I chose Below the Radar because of the beer listing. We enjoy trying different beers and they boasted over 100 selections. There was a bar area, with a separate eating area for those who still wanted to hear the loud music. We were whisked down a long hallway to an eating area in the back under a large skylight, where the loud music was just a memory. There was flat screen on the wall, and the waitress was nice enough to ask if we wanted to change the channel and even asked for suggestions. The food was amazing and the beer we chose was excellent as well. Will definitely try this restaurant again.
Food & Beer are outstanding but the noise level is deafening. It was hard to talk to the person seated directly across from me! But as the crowd thinned it became far more manageable and more enjoyable.
Food is very good. Best trout I've had in a while. Beer is really awesome. My favorite was the a Black Shadow Ops. Noise level and all, I'd go here again just because of the food and beer.
Please educate your wait staff on selected local beers. The staff could not infom me of any good light/mild local craft beers cause he had not been educated on them. Taste test is the best in my opinion. Plus you ran out of the on I was wanting ( Yellowhammer) Thank You
