Great ambiance, good food, and fantastic value for money. Also tables are well spread out so felt secure in covid times. Warmly recommend!
WONDERFUL TO BE IN A FULLY OCCUPIED BELLANGER NOW THAT IT IS ESTABLISHED AS OPEN AGAIN - WITH A RATHER MORE VARIED CLIENTELE THAN BEFORE THE 2019/20 CLOSURE. IT HAS A REALLY SOCIABLE ATMOSPHERE
Very good all round experience. Not an extensive menu but very tasty.
Good atmosphere and staff are great. Food bill was a little higher than it use to be with a slightly smaller menu but it’s expected especially during this COVID period. Hopefully things will go back to normal this time next year.
Great worth the time.
Went for brunch with the family. An absolute pleasure - all the food of a high standard and flexible to dietary needs. We hope to be back to our regular visits post lockdown.
Excellent service and ambience for a business meal. Food is reliable, if unimaginative. Lovely staff.
Fine restaurant with ample seating in these odd times
Very elegant restaurant! Beautiful, lots of 'cachet' and excellent measures regarding Covid, the best we've seen. The service was great, friendly, efficient. The food was delicious, the mains especially, I had fish which tasted very fresh and was perfectly cooked while my boyfriend delighted himself with a 'Coq au vin'. I chose the formula and was disappointed with the starter (onion soup) it was not warm enough; and the same with the dessert, the latter was very good but could have been a bit warmer. Two ladies on the table behind ours were maybe drunk, they were so loud so it spoilt a bit the pleasantness of our experience; but nothing the restaurant can do about it! We will come back : )
Delicious traditional food, generous portion size in a sophisticated atmosphere. Have visited many times and enjoyed it every time. So glad it's still open as it's one of my favourites!
one of the best restaurants in Islington. Lovely atmosphere, lovely food.
Bellager is the perfect venue for a Friday night dinner. We just love it here.
Booked for a birthday date with my hubby. Was shown to the bar upon arrival so as told have to wait for a table despite reservation which was fine as we wanted to order drinks at the bar. Ordered a glass of Bollinger and before it arrived we were told our table is ready. Champagne was served at the table and was disappointing as served in a petrol station style flute which was wet on the outside! Champagne was not chilled. At £17.95 a glass we expected more.
Starters ordered were chicken liver parfait (good) and a cheese soufflé (extremely disappointing as was not fluffy, not soft but was tepid). The accompanying cheese sauce in a small jug was so cold that it was simply congealed cheese.
For mains, I ordered the steak with pomme purée which was very good. The pomme purée was basic mash potatoes. My hubby ordered the coq au risling was was awful as the chicken was cold, hard and the white wine sauce was very runny. My husband didn’t eat much of his meal and the waiter didn’t ask why it was barely touched when he removed the plates.
Dessert was ice cream (great) and creme brûlée which was cold and disappointing in taste.
Overall we left feeling disappointed and treated as just part of the herd as it was very busy (Thursday night) and they were not really interested in providing a memorable / pleasant experience rather just interested in numbers.
Noteworthy to note that no offer to refill our empty glasses was made. Quite a loss to the owners as we would have happily ordered more champagne. However, we didn’t bother asking as by then we were already looking forward to getting out of there.
We visited another French bistro nearby (Sacre Coeur) three days prior to this visit and we found that, at 50% of the price of Belanger, to be far more authentic & tasty as well as attentive. We hear that the French bistro adjacent to Bellanger is also very good so I’m afraid we’ll be giving Bellanger a wide berth from hereon.
Lively restaurant. Fab atmosphere
Lovely food & wine.
Pleasant and friendly staff.
Will definitely be going back.
perfect for a catch up conversation with a friend, service attentive but relaxed
Love this place so much! Hope it stays open beyond December.
Thank god this place is back in business. The most reasonably priced menu in the neighbourhood. Great menu, food and drinks.
A nice lunch with excellent service in a pleasant venue. The soufflé Swiss was just OK. The rest of the mains were good. The chocolate delice was not our cup of tea. The service however was more than perfect. The waitress was efficient, friendly and kept Covid 19 rules more than perfectly. We will be coming again, Covid permitting.
Chose the 3 courses for under £20 deal and it was really good. The duck was especially good. Will definitely go again.
Great experience. Friendly service and food was on point.
Great service and shorter bistro menu is a big improvement.
Tarte flambé very poor.
Overall a disappointing experience. Food was average and took forever to arrive. The maitre d' did at least take one round of drinks off the bill (as she did with other diners).
Such a shame it is closing. Great place
Very sad to see Bellanger go, will be difficult to find another favourite like it
so sorry to see this place closing down - we have loved visiting here nearly every month since they opened. Hopefully they will open again in London somewhere convenient
Always excellent, one of our favourite restaurants in the area
Very nice blah, blah, blah
So so sad Bellanger is closing! Our favourite local!
This was our third time at Bellanger. The restaurant has a great ambience. The food was great and good value for the money. The first two visits were spot on but our last visit was a bit inconsistent with the previous two. they always serve bread on the table whether it's a brunch or ala carte but this time we didn't get one and my 2 kids were a bit disappointed. It's little things like this that makes them excel from other restaurants. Overall, great restaurant and I would recommend it to others.
A first-rate and upmarket French Brasserie. A traditional menu, with plenty of choice and good quality food. The service is excellent and compliments the beautiful interiors. We were a table of 4 and everyone enjoyed the experience. We'll be back.
A restaurant with lovely food and ambience. Very comfortable for having a nice conversation without need to raise one's voice; however, the big let down was service which was very slow at first and one had to keep flagging down waiters to repeat instructions.
If they were to improve this I would gladly give this a 5* rating as the oysters and steak I had were first class.
My partner’s steak was good but my chicken paillard was over cooked and v tough. Not what I’d expect from a respected place like Bellanger. Service was professional as ever and it was not busy so we were able to have a relaxing meal. But, I’m a foody so I’m not sure I’d go back.
A lovely brasserie in Islington, won’t be disappointed. Love the fact it’s family friendly. Loyal customer
Dinner at Bellanger was great this evening! We had a dog with us and he was treated with such care and friendliness from the staff. Food was lovely and enjoyed the wine a lot too! Will definitely be coming back
Amazing food - much better than we expected from having looked at the menu online which just looks like a normal all day dining brasserie. Means it’s excellent value for money and the service was very good too.
Service is ok,
The only downside, the menù is the same food since 2/3 years.
What else to said.... 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
This restaurant is quite beautiful - it feels like a film set. And although one wouldn’t go there due ‘fine dining’ (it’s a brasserie after all) it does what it does very well indeed because of the chic and retro ambience, and because of the unusually good service. Even at some of the best restaurants one doesn’t expect good service, be we got AMAZING service. Our (very French) waiter wasn’t fawning or invasive or overly familiar; he was classy, kind, helpful, entertaining and maintained just the right level of discreet distance. Good service makes all the difference. ALL THE DIFFERENCE.
Dogs sitting at the table next to you eating food off the table is a bit of a turn off
Food was OK. Large portions and tasty. Restaurant was noisy but expected this. However, too many dogs including a couple barking. Don't mind dogs but quite off putting.
If I keep returning to a restaurant then it has to have something worth returning for. For me Bellanger ticks all the boxes, hard to fault. It’s not AMAZING, but it’s definitely good and value for money - so I keep returning.
