Bella On The River Ratings and Reviews
When we got to the restaurant they already had our table waiting for us, so we didn’t had to wait which was great. It is a very nice restaurant, really private, and great for a celebration such as New Years Eve, it also is very picturesque, it just has a vibe of happiness al over the place. Everybody working in the restaurant had the best actitude and were extremely nice. The food was great, really tasty and just indescribable, the special menu they had for New Years Eve was just perfect for the occasion. Amazing experience in an amazing restaurant, we loved it.
We read all the reviews for Bella on the River; and, while somewhat inconsistent, we decided to try it during a getaway to San Antonio. We now know why the reviews are inconsistent. Our server was very nice; but, hurried us a bit. We shared (we’re seniors with lighter appetite these days) a salad that was excellent. The server brought us bread with roasted whole garlic and olive oil that was excellent. We ordered the paella to share and the server told us five minutes (uh oh!). Sure enough the paella arrived in five minutes, obviously pre-prepared. The plate itself was hot; shellfish on top were cold. Rice was lukewarm, as was a single piece of chicken and chorizo was pretty much MIA. Rice and peas were stuck together and not even fluffed. Too bad because the dish was really well seasoned and had it been made to order versus reheated, it looked to be excellent. So for those who get fresh dishes, good reviews come. Hence it is the cause of inconsistency in reviews. Be forewarned and I’m sure it will be a positive experience. As a positive, the server told the manager about our dissatisfaction and he brought us fresh paella; but, the damage was done. He offered to take it off our bill; but, we’re not looking for handouts. He should have just taken it off the bill. Good luck! It is a lovely restaurant and many people have had good meals there. Just don’t be rushed and request fresh.
A nice gem in the river walk. Food was very good, lamb was especially tasty. Pork was a bit dry, really needed the red pasta side to complete it. Bread is something that should not be missed. Roasted garlic dip is outstanding. Server was great, even thought the place was pretty much packed. All in all a really good evening. We will be back!
We have been coming to Bella since its beginning. We come by ourselves and we bring friends and out-of-towners as well. Bella provides a consistently brilliant overall dining experience every single time...food, beverage, atmosphere, and service. We love this little jewel and make it a point to come back often throughout the year.
My husband and I decided to try Bella On the River for dinner one evening during our first visit to San Antonio, as it was highly rated on Yelp and sounded like our kind of place. We made reservations a few weeks before our visit, and it was a good thing. We sat at dinner and watched many people get turned away who had not made reservations. It is a small restaurant upstairs with some additional outside seating downstairs by the River. We had a wonderful dinner in every way. Our server was perfectly attentive, the food was delicious, the atmosphere felt and looked like old-world Europe, and the prices were appropriate for the quality and quantity of food. We highly recommend Bella!
The dining experience at BELLA was excellent. There was an amazing selection of moderately priced wines. The duck was wonderful very tender prepared with carmelized onions. The lobster and scallops were cooked to perfection. My daughter had the fried ravioli which were very tasty and not greasy. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly medium rare. The eggplant bruschetta was divine as well as the pasta norma which had eggplant and fresh tomato sauce, hot Italian Sausage.
Although we have eaten at Bella on the River several times before, this last experience beat them all. The pasta was truly al dente, and the cream sauce was light - just as the waiter described. A variety of perfectly cooked seafood topped the pasta, and the combination as delicious! The lamb was also exceptional, and the French ganache/syrah blend was a damn good bottle for the price. It turned a rainy, dreary night into a delight.
My 3 girlfriends and I went to Bella On The River for my birthday! The food was excellent and the wait staff made us feel special.
Due the coziness of the restaurant, it is noisy, however, we still felt comfortable and our conversation flowed well.
Would highly recommend this restaurant!!!
Ate here for our anniversary. Included in the notes a request to have a bottle of house wine at the table. The owner didn’t disappoint. He greeted us himself and brought us to their favorite table in the place, a love seat table with a fancy backing. We had the fillet mignon, a seafood pasta, and the little gem salad. I would recommend them all!
We've dined here many times over the years. Every time there are a few things you can expect. The owner will always great you and thank you for coming. The service will always be great. The food will be as close to impeccable as you can expect. If you want a sure homerun for for any occasion, this is your place.
Bella on the River is an intimate setting on the Riverwalk inside an old adobe (?? I think) building. It feels very historical.
A couple of negatives if one is at all physically impaired: Immediately after entering, there is a steep staircase going up with very little standing room at the top. It’s a little uncomfortable waiting to be seated as we had to stand right by others’ tables - I felt like we were intruding on them - it was awkward. (There is no way my elderly parents could come here because of the stairs and the lack of room - one parent has to use a walker.). The tables are very close together, we had to negotiate our way through them to get to our table (neither one of us are big or physically impaired).
However, after being seated (and apologizing to the table next to us for bumping into them while getting settled in), the waitress was excellent - friendly and attentive! The food was excellent. The small setting is very charming once you look around. There is a small bar in the corner and wine storage/display. It looked like there was another room through an opening.
Overall we had a wonderful time and enjoyed the food. We would definitely come back.
If you like your steak tough & under cooked, and your scallops & lobster over cooked & chewy, than this is the place to go. Everything is a la Carter and small leading to an outrageous bill for poor quality food. The restaurant is so small, that I kept getting bumped into, and tripped over. I wished I had eaten at Biga On the Banks for a third night in a row instead, which serves world class foods.
Interesting place. I like to try new places and tend to shy away from chains. I was disappointed with what I received for the amount paid. The experience was nice, just not worth what was charged. I have enjoyed other restaurants substantially more for less money.
My husband and I have eaten here before so we decided to take our friends while they visited from out-of-town. We wanted to take them there because of the ambiance and attentive staff. We were impressed with the cave-like setting and the food is really good. The meal was just as fabulous this time as last, from the wine to the appetizers to the dinner. Our waiter Patrick was great. He was attentive without being too much. He helped us with our wine pairing and the food came at a nice pace. Everything was fresh, delicious and perfect. We ordered the signature Eggplant Josephine and meat/cheese plate for appetizers which were just as I had remembered them. For dinner I had the rabbit saddle which was divine. The wine pairings were spot-on. And I loved that they let us linger a bit longer than we normally would since we were visiting with dear friends. I will definitely come back to this neighborhood gem.
Had a wonderful time at Bella on the River. The paella was fantastic, and the restaurant was very small, warm, cozy and with a very friendly staff. I'd recommend Bella's to anyone looking for great food, in a great location on the Riverwalk, for a wonderful evening.
I had read such great reviews about this place, and by the time I arrived, I was famished. But the meal was uninspired ... downright bland. The waiter did a great job, but it couldn't make up for my disappointment when each course arrived. It was not worth the money we spent.
