Went to Belga Café for brunch on Sunday with my brother and his girlfriend who were visiting from out of town and on a time crunch to hit the road to embark on their long drive home. Our server, Arslin was attentive and served with a smile! I would recommend going to Belga Café for brunch on Sunday! Their bloody Mary was delicious and I recommend the Hanger Steak.
Excellent food. Nice, busy atmosphere. Love the Eastern Market area of DC. Feels like Europe
The food was good as always. The service was slow - not the waiter's fault - our waiter was also working as the bartender at the same time and the bar was pretty busy. He did not have time to do both jobs. Not sure why the manager did that.
I love going to Belga cafe but this last experience was disappointing. Despite our 12:00 reservation, we waited over 35 min for a table, as did many others with reservations, and then we were pushed along to finish brunch and clear out. The food was good as always but I found the hostess and the wait pretty disappointing.
Steak frite Belge was perfectly cooked. They actually understand rare, medium rare, etc. Tasty cocktail selection. Really enjoyed the Betty's G&T! Very broad wine list ($45 and up) with a reasonable selection of 1/2 bottles as well.
We visited for brunch on a nice sunny Saturday. They opened up the front window and it was comfortable to be in the shade and getting fresh air. The service was good. I have been here a couple times fr brunch and the food is a great staple. Everything comes out fresh and portions are good without overdoing it.
all time favorite for mussel and great ambiance. the outside café is perfect and the staff are great. make sure to stop!
Excellent...we left discussing what we would order on our next visit!
Overpriced and underwhelming. Appetizer better than any of the entrees. Happy hour prices at bar only. Dizzying selection of beer with no guidance from our inattentive server even when asked. A $30 bottle of beer poured with such a head on it by our waiter that it had to be shoveled through to get to the beer.
Sit at the bar, order the frites, ask the bartender for his opinion, and you may enjoy yourself.
Food was fantastic as always...mussels are the best. It was a quiet weekend with many open tables. Perhaps that's why the staff felt so relaxed. Our server was the bartender...we saw more of the waitstaff walking back and forth to the kitchen than we did of him. The host spent the evening banging away at his laptop two tables down from us. I have been going here since it opened (long time hill resident). It has had its ups and downs, but service has nearly always been better in the past.
Thanks for the great evening , great food, excellent recommendation of beer and wine pairing with the dishes chosen; creation of a dessert based on our description
Usually, Belga Cafe is our go-to restaurant, reliable food and exquisite service. My husband and I have been going there for years. I have often met business acquaintances there for HH at the bar.
Staff was desperately un-attentive on Easter Sunday at the dinner hour. Understandably, they'd been through a busy brunch. I get it. That's no reason for the staff remaining to completely fall down on the job. We had to ask for service once seated, after several minutes of waiting -- just to get water. There were only 2 servers, which was fine; there was no crowd. At one point, we had to ask for the manager to simply give our order -- that's when the waiter appeared (he's the one who gave us the "brunch was busy" reason for lack of service at dinner).
Rather than give a long list of everything that was sad about our experience, I'll hit the low lights: a beer poured so poorly that there was about an inch and a half of beer topped with 4 inches of foam -- the waiter just shrugged and walked away; interminable waiting for our appetizer -- the waiter was extremely slow (we'd finished 3/4 of the app) before checking on the quality of the food; and, finally, the waiter did not check on the quality of our main courses until we'd finished about half. He had one other party, who re-seated themselves at the bar after their dinner. THE WAITER HAD TIME TO GO BEHIND THE BAR, AT LEAST 2 OR 3 TIMES, TO FLIRT WITH TWO WOMEN, WHO HAD FULL ATTENTION OF THE BARTENDER AND A CUSTOMER. I'd give the service zero stars.
Food? We share the Kipper Cigars -- perfectly cooked! My husband had the bouillabaisse -- it was OK, but nothing compared to another Hill favorite: Bistro Cacao. I had the scallop entree. The beets were perfect; the scallops could have used just a touch of salt. I'd give the meal three stars.
This is the worst service experience we've had at Belga Cafe. It will take many, many months to get past it. The food is so good, we're likely to go back, but never on a slow day.
The front door staff continues to behave as though they work in a private club. I watched multiple tables get seated with incomplete parties, yet I was made to wait for my dining partner to arrive before we could be seated. Waited almost 10 minutes for a server to greet us. We ordered brunch cocktails, coffee, appetizer and entrees. Cocktails arrived....we had to remind our server about our coffee almost 20 minutes later. Our entrees came and we had to send them back because the appetizer hadn’t ever shown up.
This is not my first time dining at Belga..and the service is consistently mediocre at best....there are plenty of wonderful places to have brunch on 8th st....I’ve given Belga enough chances to impress me. I’m done now.
Easter brunch. Food was excellent
Awesome food and great service. We will return.
Once again a delightful experience at Belga Café. The food was excellent & the service unobtrusive and professional. We asked our waiter to have the music turned down & he had it done right away.
We will definitely return.
Not bad, not bad. Check it out yo!
The food and service was good; only issue was we made reservations for 1245 and they were over booked. We had to wait for an hour. I might not go back to brunch during that time.
Maybe try their dinner...
Belga continues to serve solid, tasty dishes for brunch, lunch and dinner. We had friends from SFO who thought their dinner was excellent. Belga's food never disappoints.
Despite our reservation, the restaurant seated us 75 minutes after our reserved time.
Belga Café is our favorite restaurant on Capital Hill and our favorite Belgium restaurant. It has always provided us with very, very good food, a relatively quiet environment and responsive service.
Not the Belga cafe I knew from a year or so ago.. The noise level was such we had to ask for the
music to be turned down, we couldn't hear ourselves speak! The restaurant was almost empty on a Friday lunchtime.
An order of the waffle was great but the mussels were just OK. Our server seemed distracted but we were rescued by another who was much more attentive.
Overpriced fro what we had.
The mussels are the best in town! And, the service was great.
Great menu. Server was great also.
Had a great experience... service was top notch. Food was just as great as our last experience 3 years ago...
Great whiskey selection for a Belgian restaurant.
We love it when Arslan is our server. Service is always fantastic at Belga, but Arslan is outstanding! The food is always delicious.
Very good food and service
Belga Cafe captures the essence of Belgian cuisine and beverages. Well worth the dining experience.
Surprisingly extensive range of Belgian beers - but be careful with prices. Excellent moules frites - but do not order the small portion unless you wish to forgo the wonderful frites -- and not inexpensive either for a small portion. Rabbit legs -- actually a stew -- was also excellent although rabbit could have enjoyed 15 more minutes in the pot for total tenderness. Accommodations for friend with food allergies were appropriate.
Our friends often go to Belga - and we can see why! We reserved for 1:30 on a Sunday - arrived at 1:05 and they were able to immediately seat us. The brunch menu is a great combination of reimagined brunch items and inventive items. One person had their eggs "benedict" which is over smoked salmon, with amazing hollandaise sauce. Another had a cornmeal waffle with pulled pork , avocado and a poached egg on top. I had the skillet with fried eggs, potatoes and a chorizo hash that was outstanding. Go!
Great bottled beer selection. I wish they had fewer imperials on draft. Scallops, hanger steak & mussels were good.
Well presented and creative cuisine at reasonable prices. What else can one ask for? Keep up the good work!
Had a wonderful Moules Marinere. But the waiter forgot the French bread I ordered with it. It’s not surprising since the noise level was extremely high. They clearly need to expand their facility. Tables were too close together. Very long line waiting to be seated on a Sunday at noon. Luckily we had reservations and were seated immediately. But those waiting were in the same area as those eating making it even louder and more crowded. This was in February . Perhaps in warmer weather the waiting line is mostly outside.
Belga is a Belgian restaurant famous for its beer list, which runs dozens of pages. It is close to the Eastern Market Metro station and not far from Capitol Hill. The staff are knowledgeable about the beer and the food and will give you reccomendations on pairings. The food is Belgian, which is much more than mussels, frites, and waffles. There is plenty for every taste.
If you go on the weekend, it can get noisy, just from the ambiance of the people around you. You will have to listen carefully if your waiter is soft-spoken, especially if he is telling you about Flemish beer or special foods.
This is my second time dining at Belga Cafe; both trips have been for weekend brunch. The spot is cozy yet fun, the food is delicious and the service is great. I am not much of a dessert or chocolate person, but the mousse plate must be made by angels. Highly recommend and plan on going back to try out their dinner menu.
Have enjoyed Belga Cafe so many times. Always a wonderful experience.
Great neighborhood gem! Cozy, fantastic Belgian food, great for brunch and dinner. Love the waffles for brunch! The mussels are fantastic too! Great value!
Belga Cafe is a great brunch spot right near the Eastern Market metro stop. We had a fantastic afternoon walking around the flea market and brunch was great. You will want to have reservations, as it was very popular.
Wonderful brunch! Food was great, host and server were outstanding.
