Belga Cafe Ratings and Reviews
Had a great lunch, food was tasty and service was excellent.
Had mussels and they were great.
Would definitely go back except for an incident in the kitchen , bar area where the manager or owner was really insulting and vulgar to his staff , after that , it made me uncomfortable and I’m not sure i should offer my patronage again
We made reservations using OpenTable. At the table, we were seated across from each other, but were too far apart to be able to hear the other with the ambient noise. (There was a large group seated next to us) Plus, we wanted to sit next to each other, so the manager and server seated us at another table to accommodate. They were busy, so we appreciated them making this happen!
My date had the spiced/mulled wine and I had a craft beer from their great selection. We decided to go right for the entrees: my date got the venison chop special and I got the Beef Bourguignon. To say that the food was amazing is an absolute understatement....I was wowed by the flavor and tenderness of the beef. I also tried the venison, which had a black cherry sauce/reduction of some kind that blew me away.
We had the Soesjes met Smoesjes (profiteroles with maple-syrup vanilla ice cream). I can’t recommend these enough!! YUM!
All-in-all, this was a great place to go...take the opportunity if you are looking for some great food in Capitol Hill.
There were 11 of us all seated at a cozy back table. (We reserved ahead.) We could hear each other! And were able to talk with ease. This was very important to us. So many restaurants are just too loud, but not Belga. They have a good menu to order from. Two of our party wanted fresh fruit plates, which were preordered, and they were ready for them. We came in with a cake, and they helped us get plates, forks and serving implements. We were unrushed and had a great time. Highly recommend this place.
We always enjoy Belga. The food is always fabulous and the service is always pleasant. The crab & chicken cigars and the steak frites are “go to” dishes for me. We tried the tart a la tatin for the first time. While a slight departure from the traditional preparation, it was delicious: appealing to both a visual & taste sensation.
The food in Belga is great and different. We came here for Sunday brunch and I ordered the waffles with fried quail which was delicious. Relatively affordable, based on DC prices, and highly recommend if you are foodie and want to try something new. Service was great too.
I went to Belga Cafe with my sister-in-law, who recommended it. She is also a vegetarian. I must say, I couldn't have been more pleased with my meal. I started with the onion soup, and I'm SO glad I did. It was the best I've ever had, hands down. I debated between having mussels (they have 8 preparations to choose from!) and steak as my main course, and decided on the latter. It was a filet, cooked perfectly, accompanied by Bernaise sauce, vegetable, and frites. The steak was phenomenal, as were the frites. The veggies were very good, too, but paled in comparison to the rest of the meal. My SIL had one of the vegetarian options and frites, and couldn't have been happier. For dessert we split the Belgishe Chocolade Moussejes, which was a delightful combination of types of mousse.
I can't wait to go back and have the mussels!
A true neighborhood gem. We've been going to Belga for years. Year after year they continue to deliver fantastic food, do not miss out on the mussels. Belga is top of mind anytime we have guests in from out of town, we start with brunch at Belga to kick off an amazing time. Cozy, authentic, great food, great service!!
Although making a reservation, we still had to wait, then the host gave our table to another. The service was poor, but maybe he was new and tried. The breakfast english muffin was a soggy mess and while the waiter acknowledged that the food arrived NOT as I had asked with the muffin on the side, he failed to ask me if I wanted a replacement muffin. It finally arrived, with no butter and no offer of butter. My dining partner had to ask for a coffee refill twice. The waiter was barely seen, never asked if all was OK or if we needed anything else. Ever.
This was our first visit to a highly recommended restaurant and we were not disappointed. We were immediately seated upon arrival (5 minutes ahead of reservation) and water was served immediately and our server arrived very shortly thereafter. He was very knowledgeable and delivered our appetizer, entre and desert in the proper order with no rush whatsoever. We are mussel lovers and they have the best we have ever had anywhere. Our entries were very good as well with one minor exception. One entre with mussels also had crab legs which were tasteless and appeared to have been previously frozen. We mentioned this to our server but no followup ensued....we were a bit disappointed. Also, on this evening there was a party of 20 seated in the front at two long tables next to us and it was a bit much....
All said, this is an excellent place and we will return many times...
This was our first visit to Belga Café. Our experience matched most of the reviews. The menu is creative, with many Belgian specialties. We started off with escargots and steak tartare, which were excellent, and chose duck breast and rabbit stoofpot for entrées, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to top it off. The rabbit was difficult to get off the bone, but otherwise the food was well prepared and attractively served. The choice of drinks is overwhelming; we bypassed the beer listings and opted for a bottle of red Sancerre, which went well with our entrées and was reasonably priced. The staff was courteous and very helpful. The noise level was rather high.
There were three table and a few people at the bar, but we felt completely ignored. It was as if the server's annoyance to be working increased each of the three times he came to our table over the course of 2 hours. I typically really enjoy Belga, and, had it not been for my awesome dinner companion, this meal would have been a total downer.
Love Belga Café. Love the food. Love that they open at 0900 on a Sunday morning! Great choices and always have a tough time making a decision on what to get. Husband had the ham and swiss omelet. I had the pulled pork on corn waffle. Think I would ask for a regular waffle next time (corn waffle a bit dry) and a few roasted potatoes on the side would have set it off - even though I love the avocado garnish. I have no complaints at all except for loud 80's rock music at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. Could we start out slow with something calming and work up to Journey and Kansas? Just didn't jibe with the upscale Belgian cuisine but, particularly, so early in the morning.
I must admit to being rather single-minded when it comes to Belga Care: Mussels and Frites!
My wife was more adventurous than I, choosing the hangar steak. Both were excellent...maintaining the consistently high standards.
The highlight of our evening was when our server was able to produce a bottle of Kasteel Rouge that we've been unable to find anywhere else and had believed it to be discontinued!
