Beecher’s – The Cellar

The downstairs cellar was a neat find. Very rustic and great place for a casual dinner or lunch. Great mac and cheese. Small menu but lots of options for everyone.
Service was slow to the point it was almost non-existent. Food was good, but we only saw our waiter for brief moments every 20-30 mins. We were a group of 8 and would have ordered more had we seen our waiter more often. Very disappointed.
The Mac&Cheese is just amazing! The wait staff helpful and friendly. This will be a destination for me every time I visit NYC! Just delicious!!
Went to Beechers for a client lunch the other day and it was great! We all got our own soup - the tomato soup was amazing, the french onion a close second. Then we shared a bunch of small plates. For 5 people, we split: 2 kale salads, an order of the meatballs, one grilled cheese and a Cesar salad. We were going to order a charcuterie plate to share, but we were so full since the plates were a pretty decent size. It's downstairs in their Cellar, so it's very dark and super cozy. If you like cheese, definitely check this place out.
We went here for brunch with a few friends, and it was perfect for cozy comfort food that felt just a touch upscale. The tomato soup was some of the best I've ever had!
We flew in from California for a music concert weekend and The Cellar was recommended by a friend. Not only was the food and wine amazing, but the staff was charming and very helpful.
I'm so glad we spent our evening dining there!
Mushroom tart was pretty tasty and imaginative, but I wasn't blown away by any of the mac and cheeses on our sampler (we had all the veggie options) or the white bean dip.
Ambiance and service were both better than the food. It's nice and quiet in the cellar, but the servers are fun and the right level of engaged.
The food was super rich. Noise level was quite loud and hard to hear our friends speak. Mac and cheese was inconsistent in how much it was cooked as we ordered a couple so could compare. Wouldn't rush back here.
After spending some time looking for a good dinner spot in Flatiron, my husband and I decided to venture into The Cellar. Having tried Beecher's cheese in Seattle, we knew we were in for a treat.
We had a reservation for 8 PM, but were seated early - around 7:45. A huge plus, since we were hungry. The menu had some fantastic selections, and we settled on the cheesemonger's cheese plate, the meat flatbread, and buffalo mac and cheese. We also got a cocktail, each.
All in all, the food was phenomenal, and our servers were friendly and accommodating. If I had only one complete, it's that the restaurant was a bit noisy, since it has a thriving bar scene in the back.
Would definitely go back.
food was really good and the server was nice if odd, but it's so loud and we went on a quiet Wed. night when it was only half full. The food is very good and the wines by the glass are as well. The server makes good suggestions and is aware of how to accommodate gluten free. they subsitituted GF crackers.
the atmosphere is nice and cozy for winter, but honestly it's sooo loud it would be tough to recommend, but that's the only drawback
The room was a nice choice for brunch on a hot day, but the food was disappointing.
Food was great, service efficient...but WAY TOO LOUD. Must be the low ceilings and stuffy room. Gnats were buzzing our food. Food was delicious but expensive. May try upstairs casual area next time. Really was one of the best mac n cheese we've had.
Very interesting place with a wonderful selection of cheese.
It was the first time here for me and 4 more friends. We had a good time and we enjoyed the meal. We tried the mac n' cheese and they were amazing (very big portion) and the grilled cheese and tomato soup were also very good.
I have been to Beecher's a number of times before, this time was on a Gilt voucher. The voucher was worth it, however there was only 1 waiter in the Cellar and not very friendly toward us. I still love this spot but maybe better for evening dinning.
The cheese is the star here, although the rest of the menu was really excellent as well. We went for a late lunch on a Saturday, so the restaurant wasn't crowded - it's more of a night spot. But I highly recommend it. The cheese plates were very well thought-out and the cheeses were well-paired with accompanying condiments ranging from dried cherries to a caramel honey, etc. The rest of the menu was fantastic, and the atmosphere was very cool. Overall a hidden gem in the Flatiron district.
Brunch here was fantastic! The food was delicious, the wait staff was friendly and helpful, and the ambiance was relaxed.
Randomly found this place and I'm very glad I did. Very nice, quiet place close to everything with great food. What else could you ask for?
One of my favorite lunch spots; all the macaroni and cheeses are great, with lighter fare available as well.
Great place to go if you are a cheese lover. Had a nice variety of items on the menu.
My husband and I split a salad, a patty melt and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was golden brown on top and quite yummy. We ordered the patty melt without onions but the kitchen mistakenly put them on. Our server noticed before serving it and told us the kitchen was making a new one. The server's name was David and he was very detail oriented. He was so fast, the way he was zipping around and taking care of everyone, but he also took the time to be friendly.
Always a great spot to grab a drink and food in NYC. The mac and cheese is a classic and always creamy and delicious. New additions like the pastrami rub salmon make the menu great for repeat visits. Bonus if you can make it in time for the happy hour specials - some of the food and drinks are half off!
Excellent cheese, but for a place that has great mac & cheese, not kid friendly. No one under 21, even at brunch. And the chairs are super uncomfortable.
But - perfectly cooked eggs, good value
If you enjoy the idea of eating in an underground cave surrounded by wheels of cheese, this is where it's at. The mac and cheese is phenomenal, and the alcohol list is extraordinarily extensive. The lighting is dark but fitting, given you're in a cave, and the service is exceptional. I went for dinner. The movable tables can be kind of a hassle, and someone almost spilled the wine on my table when they got up to leave, but we avoided that. Great spot for probably anything.
Can't wait to go back!
Such a great gem! Very low key. The service it good and the food is great. Seems like a hotspot!
I love dining out and one of the most important things I look for is great service. There are very few places I can honestly say that I've eaten where the service is superb. My server was amazing in every way. The bonus was that the food was equally as awesome. Thank you for a very rare and wonderful experience. I look forward to more.....Maryline Kleman
This was my second time to eat here and my 3 friends had never been here but they weren't disappointed. I love the 'world's best' Mac & Cheese. Not sure it's the 'worlds best' but it sure is good! I also love watching them making the cheese upstairs behind the big glass partition. Fun to see and also fun to buy their cheese to take home.
We had lunch and shared all our dishes. It was overall wonderful. The mac and cheese was the best. Desserts were also quite good. A bit pricey but worth it.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I made a reservation for 9 people at a place I've never been. But we were so happy at the end of our meal, it couldn't have been more perfect. Great drinks and of course, mac and cheese. We weren't rushed and our table was ready when we arrived, which I appreciated greatly. We adored the cheesecake dessert! I will go back just for that!
interesting menu but could offer even more cheese centered items like raclette....fondu?
Also some less pricey wines would be nice.
Odd seating arrangement and bad acoustics....otherwise fun and tasty.....
had mac & cheese and black pepper cavatelle, both were delish. Wait staff was friendly and knowledgable. Will return to try their dinner menu.
go as a group so you can get all of the macaroni and cheese offerings.
I wouldn't recommend this as a romantic or date spot, but I would recco for a group of friends. It was a bit loud (I think that's just the way the room is set up), but for our large group that felt ok. Service was really amazing, and the staff was knowledgeable and helpful.
Brought my best friend here for her 30+++ bday. And we had a blast. The service was so welcoming. Drinks amazing (especially the Stafford White). Both the Kale/peppito & pork belly with pickled fennel Mac & cheeses were awesome. Also, had the simple salad to counterbalance all the drinks and cheese we consumed. Perfect portion sizes for sharing. Definitely has a spot on my go to list.
Good drinks, menu and location. But took forever to get the check. Even after asking 3x.
We enjoyed our food very much. It took entirely too long to just get our drinks. Food came at a much better speed but waiting 15 minutes for two bloody mary's on a Saturday is the reason I would probably just stick to buying cheese from upstairs.
I never write reviews but I felt compelled to share with the world just how on point this place is.
From the food, to the atmosphere, to the servers, everything was truly phenomenal. My original reservation changed from 6 to 4 people, and they usually only accept reservations for a party of 6 or more but they held my table and were more than accommodating.
The vibe downstairs in "the cellar" is super cool; comfortable, loungey, dim lighting with wax candles all around and brick walls and wooden tables, but not too "mood lighting-y" where it can be confined to strictly a romantic feel. I went with some friends for my birthday but this spot is really good for just about any occasion.
We all split the 5-cheese plate and the endive/arugula/sweet potato flatbread which was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Cocktails were also delicious. All around, this place is an absolute gem.
Terrible Customer Service experience leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I went there for a casual business lunch. It was not too crowded but there was only one waiter. It took 15 mins before he came to greet our table. He was friendly but overall service was sparse. The food was good. I recommend going with friends and sharing a few dishes. You'll get more variety that way.
