Beachcomber Cafe - Crystal Cove Ratings and Reviews
Hostess was incredibly rude. Brunette woman. Almost ruined experience from the beginning. Ahi tacos and beignets were excellent. Sandwiches were not very good and overpriced. Your basically paying for the view and beach location. 3 hour event. $3 round trip trolley ride from parking area to restaurant. Wear flip flops, will be walking in sand.
The Beachcomber Cafe is a nice local gem, and has yet to disappoint. We've dined here numerous times and have always been pleased with both the service and the food. Appetizers are very good, especially the Mahi Mahi Spring rolls and Crab Stack. Entrees are well presented and flavorful. The Seared Ahi Tuna is excellent, as is the Lobster Linguini Pasta and the Scallops. Side dishes are also very good, and the beignets are a lovely way to end a meal. Wine list is limited, but there are a few nice selections. Cocktails are okay, but the beer selection is very limited, and more likely than not, will be served in the can, which is curious, given the quality of the food and service. Overall, a unique dining experience, right on the sand in Crystal Cove State Park, and definitely worth the drive.
Only disappointment was our waiter, AL.
He didn’t Come by, was busy in his cell In the kitchen entrance....we could see him chatting away.
We have come here many times and absolutely love the place....
Al took our parking validation sticker and disappeared for so long I forgot about it and left....had to come all the way back for it from the parking lot on the other side of th freeway and up the steep hill.
Otherwise everything else was perfect.
Using the main entrance to the dining patio, you enter and exit off the sand.
Don't wear shoes you cannot get sand on/in.
Super quiet when we got there at 7:15am, was surprised at how noisy it became by the time we left at 8:45.
Food was creative, and the quality fairly good, only the execution did not match the price of the dishes, except for the top item, the Beignets, they were very nice.
The location is so unique that we decided that, in the future, we will likely rent some of the cottages for vacationing.
The best feature was their service. We were there on an early Wed morning and the waiter was very good.
The Beachcomber is absolutely amazing. I hope that this hidden gem stays that way, but if you venture out, make sure to put this restaurant on your list. Nestled at the bottom of the Crystal Cove access trail, this California State Park owned land is home to an amazing restaurant. The food is amazing, the service is impeccable. Make sure to either reserve in advance (they do not accept same day reservations, and only 30% of their available seating is on OpenTable), and give yourself 10-15 minutes to walk down from the Los Trancas parking lot. Once there, stop at the bar for a pre-dinner / lunch drink, after checking in. Request an outdoor table and sit on the patio. The food is high end, but the atmosphere is relaxed. You will absolutely love this location. Make sure to keep it secret though!
Going to the Beachcomber is an experience mainly because it's right on the beach. The food is good, but the service was lacking. It was very slow and our server would disappear for long periods of time. Also, they put us at a corner table and then shut the plastic outside covering and it got very hot and uncomfortable where we were sitting. The sun was beating down on us and we requested that they reopen the plastic sheeting (since at least there would have been a slight breeze), but the manager just said "no." So, not sure how great they are with customer service. I'll still come here once in awhile, but I will be very careful about where I am seated.
Friendly greeting by host staff; table was ready at reservation time; server was congenial, competent & professional; menu offered excellent choices; food was delicious & visually appealing; bus staff kept our table clean & neat; manager visited us several times; view of the beach & ocean was breathtaking; price was fair; parking was validated; overall experience was a “ten”!
This is a great find! We learned of the Beachcomber by word of mouth, and found even locals we know are not familiar with it. Rating is excellent all the way around. Location and looks of the place are deceiving. The quality and presentation of our (party of four) meals was amazing. Our appetizers, sides and entrees were all five star! Service was excellent in all respects. Definitely will visit again on our next visit to Newport Beach.
This is such an authentic experience. We always walk from the parking lot, down the path with the painted shells and sea creatures through the tunnel into a scene from the past. It is a wonderful escape from the suburban areas of the OC. It is important to book before you go or be ready for a sometimes very long wait. We endured 2 hours once, but usually it's 30 to 45 minutes which can be spent admiring the view or if starving, walking up the stairs to Ruby's on PCH. The food at the Beachcomber is good. We like the fish tacos for lunch or the beef short ribs. The drinks are also good. The best of all is just being so close to the water and enjoying the atmosphere. A very relaxing way to spend any day...
We enjoyed our lunch. We had the fish tacos and filet mignon chili. The restaurant was very loud and very cramped, but that’s part of the charm, I suppose. It is right on the beach, which is nice. We live in Newport and probably won’t return. Too many other places that provide a nicer atmosphere.
