Beachcomber Cafe - Crystal Cove Ratings and Reviews
We always have a great time at the Beachcomber. My friends and I are at the beach almost every Friday in the summer and we have lunch/cocktails either at the bar or restaurant. This visit was strictly for lunch and I have to say, we were a little disappointed at the service this time. The food was yummy and I love the atmosphere. We took nice photos by the Christmas tree!
Have been coming to the Bachcomber since it opened more than ten years ago and it never disappoints. It is just a fun, casual, scenic spot - great food but not gourmet type - I would call it 'friendly' food. They do validate the outlandish $15 parking fee - thank goodness for that!
We arrived a few minutes before or early morning reservation and they were ready for us. We were seated, menus presented along with the specials for the day. The coffee and drinks were served quickly and after a short wait the food arrived. No on was disappointed with what they ordered, only the plates are overflowing and several doggie bags were required. All in all everything went as smoothly as possible. We were celebrating a Birthday and had a special treat at the end of the meal.
I had a reservation and the hostess sat us directly in the Sun. I asked for a different table and they said all the others were reserved for the shade. When one became available they said we were already seated (we had not ordered yet). Our waiter was nice enough to move us. The hostesses were rude. It's funny they stand under an umbrella to get out of the sun but when a table is clearly available out of the sun, they are not willing to help out a guest. Ruby's must have strict rules or training is lacking. I usually take my house guests here, but I will think again before returning. I guess the restaurant is to busy to worry about accommodating their guests.
My second time there for business. Our guests loved the location and the beef dinners were great. I had the seafood pasta and the second time I have the lobster pasta. The latter was bad. The lobster tasted a little of ammonia which I think means the meat was about to go bad.
My order of seafood pasta contained only 4 small shrimp, 2 scallops & several small pieces of cod. Normally there should have been much more of these items as well as clams & calamari. A green vegetable was added as "filler" where normally there are no vegetables in this dish. Extremely disappointed in this $28 dish!
Also, we were seated outdoor on the patio on a very chilly evening with a faulty heater that no one cared to fix even after several requests to do so. I was chilled to the bone by the end of our meal. Yes, even with a blanket & my coat.
Waiter was disorganized. He delivered entree before forgotten appetizer. He chose to bring only one of the multiple ordered desserts. My daughter is lactose intolerant so she requested cappuccino with almond milk explaining the importance of not sharing same steaming container that had cow milk. Waiter then added whip cream making the cappuccino filled with lactose. Tables are very tight. Staff is bumping into chairs as they attempt to maneuver between tables. The beach is great, the service at restaurant is marginal.
I came for the incredible view and the Salmon benedict! This is the second time I have ordered the Salmon Benny and it did not disappoint, the layers of flavor are outstanding!! and who can complain about the view?!?!?! The short walk to get there is always enjoyable, although we tried to catch the tram both ways, we only caught their dust as they drove away!!
We went to the Beachcomber for my mom's 70th birthday. They provided us with an exceptional view outside on the patio. Our server, Jimmy, was attentive and fun. The food was delicious. The corkage fee is only $15. At the end of our meal Jimmy brought a free dessert. Everyone had a great time.
We've been here several times. The place is usually busy and the wait staff very attentive. I can't say it was this day. We sat outside on the patio but the plastic wind break was still enclosing the patio so it was actually pretty warm in there and a little uncomfortable. The food was delicious but the warmth of the place and the slowness of the wait staff was a negative that day. We'd still go back since it is a place were my friend's husband (who passed a year ago) loved and we were there to commemorate his love for the place.
Over sauced entrees in general, and even burger would be made better without the mayo/aioli , I'd recommend ordering it that way. Generally most of their meals could use simplification and The apple cider adult drink dessert tastes more like a kids juice box
Friendly staff, Good service and great atmosphere as usual
The poached eggs were hard boiled on both our corned beef hashes. My ranch eggs had cheese when I said no cheese. So they brought out replacement poached eggs 10 minutes later for our now cold corned beef. We figured the receipt would have some sort of credit or compensation for the trouble but nope - full price - spent over $100 too. We could’ve asked for full replacements on the hashes and ranch eggs and they would’ve been out a lot more. Disappointed that they didn’t compensate us.
We arrange to visit this beautiful setting at least a few times a year. It is right on the ocean front, with beautiful views. It is also a historical restaurant with many historical homes that are for rent. If you have a special occasion or just want some great ambience this is a great place to go. Awesome guitarist and singer! Set the right mood for a great evening. Plus I must mention that the food is fabulous.
