Beach Chalet Brewery & Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
BEWARE! BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS IF YOU VISIT AS THIS RESTAURANT IS THE FREQUENT TARGET OF SERIOUS CRIME... Our car was parked in the parking lot, right in front of the restaurant, broad daylight, bustling with alot of people around. 2 windows on our vehicle were smashed and of course all the contents were stolen (even though nothing was in plain sight). While walking around the parking lot after this happened to see if I could find any of our belongings I noticed another car also had their windows smashed. I talked with the restaurant manager, who wasn't surprised at all and acknowledged it was a very frequent problem though blamed it on the city since it is a "city-owned" parking lot and the city won't put up cameras. Obviously the City could and should do so, but if not the restaurant should to protect their patrons. Or the restaurant could hire a person to monitor the lot. Or they could mention upon check-in to make sure you've left no valuables. Alot more could be done to protect people since it's so frequent. No matter how great the view, it's NOT worth it if your car is going to be damaged and items stolen (or worse). While I understand crime can happen anywhere, given this is a targeted location for criminals I wouldn't suggest visiting until the restaurant takes it more seriously and takes action to protect their patrons.
This used to be one of our favorite restaurants but the last three or four times we've been very disappointed in the quality of the food. Not sure if the restaurant is short staffed but things run slowly and it's difficult to get a hold of your waiter. Previously, we've had to return prime rib that was not properly cooked and delivered to our table cold. Evidently, food seems to sit a while before it's brought out. The last time we brought out of town guests and they too were surprised and the low quality of the food and service. My husband and I made a reservation yesterday (12/26/16). We ordered calamari for an appetizer and we had to return it as it was cold and not fully cooked. We made a special trip out to have the prime rib and particularly Yorkshire pudding. At first we were told they were out of Yorkshire pudding but after we expressed our disapproval we were told it would be ready in about 15 minutes. I ordered the chicken but my food was just warm not hot. Literally, I received about a tablespoon of mashed potatoes. Was very disappointed. This is such a beautiful place and it's a shame it's lacking in service and food quality. The place needs a food and service revamp. Has the potential to be one of SF's very best! Until then, very unlikely to return.
Excellent service, but felt the food was a bit overpriced for what you got. The shrimp and grits I had were just ok, a little too fancy for my taste. My date thoroughly enjoyed the Cioppino, and yes, it was very good. Ambiance takes a nosedive after dark, as the beautiful view of ocean beach disappears Our waiter was terrific. All in all a good experience. Would go back for sure.
Since we're locals, I want to say nice things. Maybe it was on off night. Basically, it was a rainy evening, so the view was not the draw. Once the waiter realized we were 'ice tea kind of people,' and we weren't going to be ordering any expensive bottles of wine, we were were ignored during the dinner. I don't have a problem with the overpriced nature of the food, it's an historic site, and I think everyone should go there at least once, but it should have been better.
My husband celebrated our wedding anniversary here recently and we enjoyed ourselves. We were given the best table in the restaurant which afforded us a clear view of ocean beach. Food was good and service wasn't bad. After all these years it's still a great place o go for a celebratory occasion!
I think the biggest disappointment was that it was impossible to get a reservation for 2:30 even 2-months out, but while eating, there were several tables that never got used. The food arrived to the table luke warm and although there was several staff running around like crazy it seemed hard to get a hold of our waiter when we did need something. And another thing - what is the deal with the parking, which there was none of because everyone going to the beach took the spaces. That needed to be resolved. However, the view is amazing though.
I go here often with friends for lunch. The food is basic (hamburgers, chicken, fish and chips, etc.) and pretty good. The ambience is wonderful -- spectacular view of the ocean. This particular occasion was to show off the sunset view to some out-of-town guests. It was a lovely evening and the meals were fine, but that particular night the service was really unacceptable. Once we got our meals, the waiter never came back to ask if everything was ok, and we kept trying to flag him down because we did need a few things. Our guest finally got up and went to the kitchen to get what he needed. When the waiter showed up, it was with the bill. He never even asked if we wanted anything else -- coffee, dessert, etc. I was embarrassed by the service. At least we got a decent meal and beautiful sunset.
The location and the view are no comparable. It was so enjoyable sitting by the big glass window and looking out at the ocean beach on a sunny beautiful SF day. Watching the birds flew by and cargo ships sailing closer, we can't ask for anything more, can we? Well, we didn't like the food there at all. It's a restaurant after all so I have to rate it by the food standard. We ordered the fish and chip, pasta, and shrimp skillet, everything was over salty and oily. they cost us $70+ without any drinks. I would expect much more delicious dishes with that price tag.
We had a very nice dinner at the Beach Chalet. This time we got a simpler of 8 of their home made beers and split each one three ways. It was a fun way to taste all their beers. The view of the Pacific Ocean is great. We always enjoy eating here and highly recommend it.
Food was less than mediocre! Been here before and it was alright. Only came back bec it was convenient. I may have to return again which is a huge drag due to the gift cards I bough from Costco was not fully used. Food was horrible! One of the worst I've ever been! Luckily the service was great!
We were having dinner with our relatives from Switzerland. The clam chowder was not very warm. We were surprised that there were not more fresh fish choices. The scallops were wonderful, also the fish and chips. Maybe more sides with some of the orders rather a than all alacarte would be nice. Our server was very attentive and professional.
There were boxes and other items stacked by the elevator door. The area looked dirty and not a good first impression as you enter the restruant.
The restaurant wasn't too crowded, but service was really slow and staff was quite inattentive. We waited 20 minutes for someone to come take our order and had to ask for coffee and water refills. Dishes were quite pricey for the amount of food they give, but it tasted good.
I've been here for dinner and it can get very noisy and of course you can't see the ocean at night. But lunch was quiet to moderately noisy. It was so much nicer having lunch because of the lesser noise level. And the western setting sun has not gotten low enough to be shinning into the big picture windows that face the ocean and the views are beautiful! The food was very good. We stayed longer than we ever did before during the dinner hour!
We had a great dinner at Beach Chalet. The service was impeccable and the view from the window seat was beautiful. I just wish it had been quieter. I rated it as 'Good fr a Date' but it was really hard to have a conversation (on a Monday night). The open space, while very nice, just makes for a loud environment. Great place but skip it if you want a cozy convo.
The poor experience we had was rather a surprise as we'd gone to the Beach Chalet in Oakland before and it was quieter, with good service. We WAITED OVER 45 min after ordering our meal. What made it worse was seeing our server deliberately avoid our table and that of those around us (no one was getting their food). ONE polite comment that their kitchen was delayed would have made the experience a lot more bearable. We were incredibly hungry and as far as we could see, the entire restaurant was filled with waiting customers, a LOT of servers with nothing to do, and absolutely NOTHING coming out of the kitchen. There's was obviously something up but instead, when our food finally arrived, we had to hear some lame excuse about one of our ordered items causing a lot of time to prepare. Give me a break! No one was getting their food. Not at our table or at any of the others. And if an item take more than 20 minutes to prepare, its usually written so on the menu. This is about respecting your customers, letting them know if there's an issue, and not placing the blame on what they ordered or ignoring their hungry faces. The wait staff could use better training on customer service, something should happen with the kitchen that can't get out a single plate for such a huge restaurant for over 45min. Never going back there again.
We love dining here whenever we are in San Francisco for art shows or whatever. We were with old friends and it was quiet enough that we could talk. Good food and drink and great view of Ocean Beach. Service was excellent and after dinner we enjoyed once again looking at the historic murals downstairs and the history displays. All in all, wonderful!
