Bavette's Ratings and Reviews
This is a cool space and has a sense of energy to it, which was fun. The baked potato was delicious and we also had the Brussel sprouts and mushrooms which were good. What was surprisingly disappointing was our steaks. We had the ribeye and the New York strip steak. The ribeye was better than the strip steak but they both lacked flavor and one was somewhat unpleasantly chewy :( Our wine was good but the whole meal was expensive and kind of forgettable. I walked away feeling meh...
I’ll start by saying this was an experience in modern urban life and I would go there again but probably will not. On a Wednesday night, it was packed, not inexpensive, very noisy and very dark. The crowd was the 25-35 set, mostly couples while my companion and I were celebrating a birthday well past 35. The menu offered a range of items but there were only 2 “specials” for the day: a fish (maybe Sole...can’t remember) for ~$78 and Chicken Pot Pie for ~ $18. Service was very nice, our server was easy and attentive and definitely did not make us feel unwanted or hurried. The food was very good and the cocktails were creative and generous. Sinatra played before 10 and KoKo Taylor came on after and the scene emptied out by 10:00 this night. Bavette’s was a nice evening and a very sophisticated atmosphere. There are other upscale Chicago restaurants as good and where these patrons would take their parents.
Outstanding. It exceeded all my expectations. The staff was friendly and professional and the food was perfect. I would highly recommend starting with the crab cake, then going with the Chicago cut, and splitting a potato. Top it off with a bottle of Malbec, both they offer are superb. This is my new favorite Chicago steak house.
Quaint romantic atmosphere coupled with great service, fabulous wine and amazing food makes this one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago!!!!! The shrimp dejounge and the thick cut bacon are a must!!!!! And that bone in dry aged ribeye cooked to perfection is a culinary delight!!! Can’t wait to return to dine again!!!!
Reservation was for 8pm. Arrived early with all present. We were not seated until around 9-9:30pm at a small table right by the front door normally set up for a small group. No explanation from staff or manager(s). Also, no bar bill accommodation for multiple drink wait at the bar either. Very disappointing.
I think If you reserve a table months in advance, restaurant should communicate that your party will be seated in bar area. Way too noisy! They forgot our crab cake appetizer, I’m still waiting for it. French fries are frozen and were soggy. Much confusion at hostess stand, took 15/20 m to get seated.
Bavette’s not worth the hype.
I brought my girlfriend to Bavette’s for a date night. We ordered the petite fillet and the ribeye. Both were of the best either of us had ever eaten. The ambiance was perfect for an intimate dining experience and was a smash hit with my lady. The service couldn’t have been any better. The staff were pleasant and attentive, without being intrusive. I highly recommend Bavette’s!
This restaurant is one of my family’s favorites as well as mine and whenever they are in Chicago, they request that I make a reservation. This was fifth time there with my family and the food was very disappointing. Normally, my family loves what they get and they cannot get enough of it, but that night, their pork chops and bone in rib eye were quite dry. I would have sent them back to the kitchen if I had known, but they didn’t want to disappoint me so they did not tell me until the next day. I am thinking perhaps the time being the day after Thanksgiving, the head chef was absent or something was off with the restaurant, but nevertheless it was a huge disappointment. Their appetizers (baked crab cake, side of bacon, and a burger) were also not as good as usual. We order the same things each time, so it was very easy to judge that they were not up to par this time. Very disappointing...
The music is so loud that you cannot have a conversation. They initially sat us at a table that was so dark that you couldn't read the menu. The main course was expensive and lousy. The steaks were poor--not good quality of meat. It is a completely over-rated restaurant.
This restaurant is at the level of Chicago Cut or Gibsons, but with a unique style of its own. I’ve been meaning to come here for years as it has been one of the top steak houses in the city. Was it worth the wait? Not really, but it is a top notch steak house. But competition is stiff for this caliber of restaurant in Chicago so I think I will try other highly rated steak houses before coming back. It might be a useful onservation to say my teenage daughter liked it but thought there were too many adults and too dark, if that makes sense about the vibe. LOL. She liked Chicago Cut much more probably because of the windows and the scene is a bit more cosmopolitan and modern. However, I liked Bavette’s steaks more than Chicago Cut. Bavette’s has more of a speak easy, dark and swanky atmosphere. Our waiter was personable and excellent.
Ambiance, sides, and appetizers were great. Unfortunately the steak was not good. We ordered their dry aged rib eye medium rare. We had to send them back for being close to well done. Waiter apologized and brought out new steaks. Unfortunately this time they were undercooked and cold. Seemed like they rushed them out. Sadly the steak was the worst part of the steak house.
