About Bastille Cafe & Bar

Opened in June of 2009 and housed in an historic 1920’s building in Seattle’s Old Ballard neighborhood, Bastille Café & Bar is a bustling homage to a Parisian brasserie. Owners Deming Maclise and James Weimann scoured Paris flea markets and local salvage stores for vintage accessories to create a truly authentic feel. From the white subway tiles, antique mirrors, and Paris Metro clock to the zinc-topped bar and stunning crystal chandelier that takes center stage in the Back Bar; they’ve truly hit the mark. Chef Jason Stoneburner creates French focused cuisine inspired by the abundance of seasonal product found locally---and it doesn’t get any more local than the restaurants 4500-square-foot organic rooftop garden. The wine list is French focused with a smattering of NW wines and the bar offers an extensive collection of absinthe.

Disappointed. It was a hunt to find any mushrooms in my mushroom ragout and the polenta was very bland. I was also disappointed that when I offered some feedback to our waiter, he just dismissed me. Won't be back anytime soon.

Very Romantic!
The ambiance is very European. Almost feels like we are in Paris, Prague or Vienna.
The food and service is great too.

Our waiter was great but the reception person appeared totally addled. This really put us off from the start. Not my favorite dining experience at Bastille.

Prices have gone up here substantially and portions are much smaller at the same time. $19 for a burger? And you have to pay extra for cheese? Come on!

Bastille has a partial outdoor seating area that they use year round. While it's great in the summer, it's not that great in the winter. When we made reservations I had no idea we'd be sitting in that area. The temps that night got into the low 30s. Even though they have heaters all over the place, it was still cold, and the cheap outdoor wicker chairs don't make it any cozier. We all ate our very expensive meals with our coats on. It doesn't make me feel welcome, nor relaxed and comfortable. We finished as fast as we could to find someplace to warm up. I expected more from a somewhat higher-end restaurant. Maybe offer blankets to patrons and comfier seating.

The waitstaff was very attentive and nice, but at some point should have noticed how cold we were. The food was OK, but again I expected better for the price. I probably won't be going back.

The food was great! Our service wasn’t favorably memorable but it was a weekend brunch (and a holiday one at that), so it’s totally understandable that they weren’t super friendly.

Bastille is my new favorite restaurant in the Seattle area!! We met friends, had a lovely booth, a wonderful waitress (Sarah) and some of the best food and wine ever. We had a lovely time and enjoyed appetizers followed by delicious meal entrees. All four of us agreed that Bastille is a total keeper and we have already planned a return visit. Keep up the great work!

Second time dining at Bastille and again, I’m more than satisfied. The ambiance is amazing and the servers and service is always impeccable. The kimchi polenta I had the first time was so unique and delicious, and the rock fish dish this last time was cooked to perfection—buttery like lobster! Amazing crime brûlée. Will be a life-long patron.

Don't skimp on the portions or anything! We ordered off the restaurant menu and (this is a compliment) was burping all night because I ate sooo much!!! I could not deny myself! The pate - YUM! Beet Salad - YUM! All of it YUM! Mussels and Cassoulet then being forced to eat dessert! Torture, wonderful torture!

We did restaurant week at another place that I do love but left hungry and slightly disappointed that I didn't even get a cookie with the gelato dessert. Bastille does it right!! That's why we love Chef Jason so much! No one out does Bastille & Stoneburner for hospitality. Always fantastic service and generosity. Thank you!

We had a wonderful dinner here, by which I mean we showed up with reservations, were seated right away, and had a server bring us drinks shortly after being seated. Our appetizer was the pork belly, which was delicious even though we thought the poached egg was slightly over cooked. Ordered the half chicken and the steak frites. Both had wonderful flavors and excellent preparation. Our server was cheerful, informative and attentive through out the meal but we never felt pushed or over-served. Solid on all counts, but I did feel it was maybe a little over-priced or perhaps I'm just getting cheap as I get older. That said, I have been disappointed at much pricier places so I left feeling contented and happy. We look forward to our return.

Mixed experience. Plusses: The frites with aioli are addictively good. The roasted cauliflower with tahini, pumpkin seeds and dates was a tasty combination of flavors and textures. Misses: The duck confit was listed as a "Large Plate" dish. The duck leg served was the smallest portion I've ever seen. Two bites and that was it. At $27, way overpriced and disappointing. Shared experience with management of restaurant. If you are hungry, make sure you ask about portion size. Apparently the restaurant appears to be combatting rising costs by downsizing portions.

Good food, good service. I was dis appointed, having made a reservation, to be given the worst table in the house. Host was not interested in my request for a nicer table for my daughter's birthday.

I love Bastille for its ambiance and wonderfully creative menu. We go for brunch but dinner is even better. I don’t generally like Brussel Sprouts but the way they do them shaved with pork belly bits and a poached egg is to die for. Very accommodating staff too, nice manners.

We were put at a table outside, where families were, which made it more noisy.
The Fall Tomato soup was good, steak frites, well, the steak was just OK. The aioli with the fries was bland.
Service was satisfactory, but the server was busy with other tables.

We were seated by a large group of people who were having a birthday or anniversary event, we received very little service from the waitress our food arrived cold and the entire evening was mediocre. That said, the staff put an awful lot of attention to the large group of people seated next to us and they seem to be having a great time. Which is why I recommend it for large groups. If you're going there for a romantic dinner just the two of you, you might want to try A different restaurant

Once again the steak frites was a complete hit. Perhaps the best one yet. I'm surprised they've taken out the rutabaga puree, but the steak and fries didn't disappoint. One of the guests in our party ordered the pork chop, which was nothing short of sublime. Service was excellent and very attentive without being overbearing. Wonderful experience as always

Not the easiest place to go with a vegan diner in our party. Waiter had to make multiple trips to the chef to ask about whether items were vegan or could be prepared vegan and there were only a couple of items available. Also, the waiter missed an item we had ordered and in my opinion mussels should be served with a bit of bread to mop up the sauce, but they charged extra for this.

The ambience was perfect for our group celebrating a 50th birthday. Our server Sarah was attentive, flexible and helpful. . The restaurant was hopping at 730 so it had a great vibe for our event and we were given a great corner table. I had the Croque Madame which was amazing. We also enjoyed the Jambon appetizer and a special appetizer of mushrooms, bread and an lovely sauce. Only bummer was at end of evening..there had been miscommunication about the champagne my friend ordered and the discussion of price went on at the table in front of the birthday guest. :( All in all it was a lovely evening and I look forward to returning.

Food is consistently above average and occasionally superb. Service is usually very attentive and accommodating, although we've hit the occasional long delay due to how busy it can get. The subway tile ambience is casual yet classy. We love going for Sunday Brunch and then hitting the Ballard Farmers Market.
