Bastien's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Food and atmosphere was great, I will return and it was very relaxing to listen to Frank Sinatra, the service could have been a lot better if the waitress was not rushing us to order. She was very rude and kept coming back to see if we were ready to order. We had an early reservstion just so we could take our time, and there was no need for the rush because there were very few people in the restaurant.
Enjoyed my dinner with my father however the hostess at the front didn’t want to give us a booth because it wasn’t that servers time to be sat a table. Then when we asked for a liquor to be put in the coffee afterwards we had to pull out of the server what kinds they had. She wasn’t knowledgable or helpful.
As Denver's original "main street" Colfax Avenue has always had quite a mix of businesses including that of restaurants. Historically some of the finest ones - and ones best left to the scrap pile and Board of Health memory - have been alongside a wide variety of businesses. Bastien's is the perfect "don't judge the book by its cover" in that from the outside it barely tells you how truly awesome it is inside. Not that the outside is bad and the free parking lot is becoming rare too, just that the inside is a tribute to the RatPack 1960's and a menu that, while not priced from then obviously, could easily have been presented to diners then. That, to me, is a tremendous plus. for millennials, maybe not which makes it even better: nobody taking photos of their meal, clicking away or growing their beards. Wonderful portions against a very reasonable price point for quality steaks, topped with very unusual, but delicious offerings. A true "hidden gem".
I was recommended this place from a couple of different friends and it definitely does not disappoint. They're known for their sugar steak, but everything we ate here was great. This place has an older decor, but it feels more authentic than dumpy. I hate even using the word dumpy as it is NOT AT ALL, but it's certainly more retro. They've got a sweet sunken bar area that you can get food at too that's just really cool. To top it all off, it's VERY affordable. It's now a go-to for me if i need a quick steak.
Loved this experience. The food was excellent. I had the sugar steak. Best steak I have had in a long time and maybe ever and I worked on a farm in Nebraska while I was in college. The Staff and service was great and so much fun. We had a blast with them. One criticism...The Better than Sex Cake...really, really, really good, a great end to the meal. But...Better than Sex? Hmmm...not so sure about that. Thanks for the great meal and adding to a great night.
Our group of three all loved our meals. One chose the tournedos, one the sugar steak. Unfortunately, we were seated next to two men whose voices were quite loud. Though the restaurant did not seem to be full, we could not be seated at a different table. We managed to do fine by just scooting closer to each other. Besides being seated in a booth (already reserved), it did not seem like any other place in the restaurant could guarantee a quieter time, thus the review for noise level (energetic). It is a great neighborhood restaurant, it has been there forever, and the steaks are reliably delicious.
3 of us tried 3 different steaks. The sugar, atomic and ring of fire were all outstanding. One of us had the 20 ounce bone in rib eye steak and it was delicious.
We also enjoyed their dinner salads and special mashed potatoes with cherry pepper chunks
Our male young server was phenomenal. Best server we have ever had at this restaurant
Just a great overall experience
Steaks still outstanding but a bit over priced. Twice baked potato used to be the best but falllen in quality. Also loved it for music with Frank Sinatra. Did not hear him once.Terrific salald, and great steak. I have been going there for over half a century.
I was looking forward to enjoying this longtime Denver institution, but I was so disappointed.
The food was marginal at best, and my sugar steak, the item they are known for, was tough.
The service was way too fast, not enough time to enjoy each course. The prices are much too high for such a poor steak. The only good thing is the building itself.
Service was TERRIBLE! The hostess had a poor attitude and our waitress didn't greet us for 15 minutes. I mentioned 3 times (when reservation was made, called ahead and at the time of our reservation) that we were ther celebrating a birthday. They did not pay attention to that at all. The food was delicious but do not expect to have "steak house" ser vice. You will not get even close to that there. It's too bad too because I had heard good things about the this place. We will not go there again for a special occasion because it will go unnoticed. But again, the food was very delicious.
