No service at the bar and when we were greeted it was by a waitress who sat us down at a table. Minor inconvenience but good overall
The food was Good as usual. Many options to choose from. The wait staff could have been somewhat more friendly and attentive
It is unfortunate that I'm writing this review. This has always been one of our favorite places to eat. In fact, I proposed to my wife here about 8 years ago. We visited for Valentines Day (a few days after on a Saturday). When we showed we had to wait 20 minutes even though we had reservations. Once we sat we ordered a bottle of wine. Ended up being a cheap headache rather than a decent wine. Found the same bottle we paid $35 for at a store for under $10. We had what was supposed to be French onion soup. After 2 bites we were both done. My wife ordered her go-to Filet. It was the first time I'd ever seen a cut of meat so over cooked on the outer part and under cooked in the middle. And not one drop of juice from the steak, was on my wife's plate. It was terrible! I ordered a NY Strip which was about the same.
We've been to a lot of very good Steak Houses and this used to be one. Now we say goodbye as we will never eat here again. To top it all off, the service was mediocre at best. The waitress asked us if we wanted a box when she saw only half of our food was eaten. We sternly said NO. She didn't even bother to ask us how it was (I think she was very aware).
I will no longer recommend that anyone waste their time unless your food standards are at the McDonalds level!
Got a party of seven reservations on a short notice and the table was ready when we arrived. The food and service was great and everyone had a great time.
Was really hoping/expecting to enjoy Bastien’s given its longevity in the neighborhood and how difficult it is to get a table. Perhaps this was an off night. On the positive we enjoyed the ambience and the service was very good. However there were a number of issues, each on their own would have been no big deal, but taken together made for a disappointing experience. First I ordered a red wine by the glass to be told after order was placed that they were out of stock. Ordered a different wine to be told again that they were out of stock of that one as well due to the California wildfires (I ordered a French wine so that explanation was specious). The mussels appetizer was not tasty. Finally, my steak came out luke warm. At that juncture I didn’t have the patience to send it back as I had given up on salvaging the meal.
I love the ambience & food at Bastien's. Definitely a Denver gem of a steakhouse!!
The food is always very tasty, but a bit expensive and as it was our anniversary we didn't mind it.
We've been here before and loved the food. This time the service was horrendous. Our server didn't seem to care about our table but rather her other tables instead. It was our anniversary and I wish the service was better to set the tone for the rest of our evening. Order came out wrong but server never came back to check on us for the order to be corrected. Once we were done eating, we waited for the server to ask about dessert but it took 30 minutes to get her attention so instead we called it a night. However, once we declined dessert she forgot about us all together and we waited another 20 minutes before making eye contact and asked her to bring our check. Highly disappointed.
Great first time experience. I would have loved to hear more about the history /back story. Food was amazing waitress was perfect with timing each entree. I left full but not in pain full. Can't wait to go back.
Bastiens is a gem of a restaurant with 4 star quality food in a casual relaxed setting that feels like home.
Everything was delicious...from the starter salad to sugar steak and yummy creme brulee. All yummy!
Always a treat to walk into a retro restaurant. The food is not retro. The food is outstanding and the prices are more than reasonable. Do it!!
LOVE Bastien's!! Found them on GroupOn about 2 years ago and we consistently go back for special occasions, end of week relaxation and casual night out with GREAT food and drink!
The waitress wasn't very engaging and it took forever to get the bill but the food compensated.
Classic steakhouse. Every bite was delicious, portions were generous, ambiance was retro with feeling overly dated. Exceeded my expectations. Definitely will go back for special occasions or date night
Food and atmosphere was great, I will return and it was very relaxing to listen to Frank Sinatra, the service could have been a lot better if the waitress was not rushing us to order. She was very rude and kept coming back to see if we were ready to order. We had an early reservstion just so we could take our time, and there was no need for the rush because there were very few people in the restaurant.
We were late getting there due to traffic from the Parade of Lights but manager was very gracious and found a way to squeeze us in.
Great food - tried some new dishes this time and they were just as good as our normal dished we get - the Steak David/Black and Tan and the bacon wrapped filet.
I had the Tournedos, very yummy...when (not if) I return some day, I am ordering this again. Hubby tried the Sugar Stake, touted as a favorite..while he really liked it, he states that he'll be ordering the Tournedos, next visit.
Enjoyed very much and the food was spectacular!
Enjoyed my dinner with my father however the hostess at the front didn’t want to give us a booth because it wasn’t that servers time to be sat a table. Then when we asked for a liquor to be put in the coffee afterwards we had to pull out of the server what kinds they had. She wasn’t knowledgable or helpful.
Great service, delicious food and wonderful ambience. The jazzy crooning of Sinatra, Bublé and Harry Connick Jr in the background was loud enough to be enjoyed and quiet enough to hold a conversation over.
As Denver's original "main street" Colfax Avenue has always had quite a mix of businesses including that of restaurants. Historically some of the finest ones - and ones best left to the scrap pile and Board of Health memory - have been alongside a wide variety of businesses. Bastien's is the perfect "don't judge the book by its cover" in that from the outside it barely tells you how truly awesome it is inside. Not that the outside is bad and the free parking lot is becoming rare too, just that the inside is a tribute to the RatPack 1960's and a menu that, while not priced from then obviously, could easily have been presented to diners then. That, to me, is a tremendous plus. for millennials, maybe not which makes it even better: nobody taking photos of their meal, clicking away or growing their beards. Wonderful portions against a very reasonable price point for quality steaks, topped with very unusual, but delicious offerings. A true "hidden gem".
This place is a gem!!! Never disappointed. Never wrong if you go for the sugar steak.
I would definately recommend trying out this dining experience. This will be our new spot for date night.
Bastien's is fantastic, a mid-century modern gem with great food, reasonable prices and a friendly staff.
I was recommended this place from a couple of different friends and it definitely does not disappoint. They're known for their sugar steak, but everything we ate here was great. This place has an older decor, but it feels more authentic than dumpy. I hate even using the word dumpy as it is NOT AT ALL, but it's certainly more retro. They've got a sweet sunken bar area that you can get food at too that's just really cool. To top it all off, it's VERY affordable. It's now a go-to for me if i need a quick steak.
Outstanding food value. Steaks are delicious and done to perfection. The service is always excellent.
Classic steakhouse. Great selection, unique and creative recipes in addition to simple steakhouse classics. Excellent service and reasonably priced, all things considered. Brie would have been better in a pastry shell instead of with crackers though!
We cntinue to enjoy Bastien's, albeit a bit pricey. Steaks are excellent, salad is superior and soup is always very goo. We cannot afford to go often, but always enjoy the meal.
The meal was exquisite. The Sugar Steak was as legendary as advertised. The service and ambiance were top notch. I felt that 4 stuffed jalapeño halves for $17 was over-priced, but aside from that, we enjoyed the experience.
A little scared by the outside- needs updating. Recommendations had been great, thought, so wanted to try the famous sugar steak. It delivered!! And inside ambiance was much better. Give it a try!
Great place for dining and especially the sugar steaks! We were given the name of this place by a local and I'm glad we went. Great vibe to the place and we will definitely be back.
Loved this experience. The food was excellent. I had the sugar steak. Best steak I have had in a long time and maybe ever and I worked on a farm in Nebraska while I was in college. The Staff and service was great and so much fun. We had a blast with them. One criticism...The Better than Sex Cake...really, really, really good, a great end to the meal. But...Better than Sex? Hmmm...not so sure about that. Thanks for the great meal and adding to a great night.
All around great place..service was good, love the decore. Prices not bad. Comfortable. love this place.
It was our first time..
Only one thing tables were a little small..a little cramped..everything else was great....
I feel like this is a Denver must. Love the family atmosphere, the throwback style and the good food.
A great steak - you must also have the stuffed mushrooms!!! Best fried chicken - as good as your Grandmother's, from her cast-iron skillet!!!
Love this place - took my mom, who was visiting, for her Birthday. The food was great, as usual, and the waitstaff, always friendly. Will be going back many, many times.
This restaurant has the most delicious and amazing food! Wonderful staff and service! This is one of my favorite places to go in Denver! The sugar steak is like nothing else out there!!!!! Craving it now!!!!!!!!!
