About
We are at fault in only one way... our award winning wine list is Italian, like the owner.
We just spent New Years Eve (my birthday) at BAstas and are super duper sad that it's closing...which is why we wanted to be there one last time! Our meals and service are always top notch- Shelby is an amazing server- we wish Marco and the staff well and hope the newer incarnation reflects the same spirit and quality that Bastas always has. So sorry to see you close!!
Have loved Basta's for 25 years and SO hate to see it close in just days. It was wonderful to spend a holiday evening there as a "send off." Thanks for everything.
Easy to make reservation online. The food was delivered quickly and was good quality.
There were 7 of us and we all had a different entree and every item was amazing. We all would return to Basta and refer this restaurant to a friend.
SO sad you are closing! will miss your food and service <3
Our family and friends LOVE Basta's for their food, atmosphere and wonderful staff.
So sorry that they are closing at the end of December as they cannot be replaced.
sorry to see Basta's close. It's a great northwest neighborhood place.
Basta's has been a favorite since it opened 25 years ago. I understand it is closing, and that is unfortunate. It has been routinely overlooked over the years in favor of hipster restaurants straining to come up with the most obscure ingredients and combinations gain reviews and flourish. Basta's food is so good, and I've always loved the ambiance. Over the years, Basta has kept up by periodically updating the decor, keeping it current but never sacrificing warmth and comfort. We will make sure to get in at least one more time before the end of December, when it is slated to close.
We frequent Basta's. Have reviewed numerous times. Always an enjoyable experience.
Service, food, and price point is great. The lighting was extremely dark. Most light at tables came from a single candle.
the quality of food has changed; didn't taste very good. ordered a lasagna and it was just a ball of noodles and cheese. calamri was not good either.
Delicious food for whole family after Children's Theatre. Great service. We all enjoyed it .
Delicious, inviting, cozy, perfect for a date, dinner with friends or just good meal!
Loved Basta for many years. Superior food and beverage. Service was good but not great... servers seemed to be covering too many tables. They would clear one of us and seemed to forget the other. The restaurant could use a makeover (upholstery on the booths) versus "This is us... take it or leave it." I would still take it.
Fresh made pasta and outstanding service
Happy hour from 5-6:30 is a terrific deal - reduced price drinks & fab food also at reduced prices. We ordered lasagne & spaghetti and meatballs. Both were excellent. Carpaccio appetizer is also great. They show old movies on a projection screen in the bar area which is fun. Movies are muted with subtitles so are not obtrusive. We also liked the 60's & 70's music playing too. Would highly recommend Bastas.
We had a reservation but they decided to close early instead. So they did not seat us at all
We made the reservation on Open Table. When we arrived they informed us the kitchen was closed. We were starving so we were not happy, especially after a long flight home.
The food was great. The atmosphere cozy and comfortable. The service was also very good. Went with friends and everyone was happy. Go get some!
Bastas is consistent. The food is always very good. There are many vegetarian options. Their vegetarian pizza is excellent, as are their onion rings. Prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. We like the old Netflix movies projected on the wall.
we have all been coming there for almost 20 years, and enjoy it just as much now, or maybe even more.
great food, great drinks....but most of all we are now in love with our purple haired waitress. I wish I could remember her name, but she has taken care of us the last two times we came in....and she is the best. we can be a little manic, and she knows just how to treat us.
see you next time.
Havnt been here in a couple years, and the food and service were still just as great as the past.
I've been to several Italian restaurants in Portland, but this one just bumped up to one of my faves. Delicious pasta vongole. Great Caesar salad too.
We do not go to Basta’s as often as we have in the past (the last time was February 2015), but with owner/chef Marco Frattaroli raising money for the Italian Red Cross in connection with the earthquake in Amatrice, it was all the incentive we needed to return.
For one week he added the town’s pasta specialty, Amatriciana, to the regular menu with proceeds to be donated to the Red Cross. The dish, bucatini pasta with onions, fresh tomatoes, pecorino cheese, guanciale (pig’s cheek), and a touch of chili, was wonderful, and we hope he leaves it on the menu! We added a side of spinach to give us a “green” and it went well with the dish. The atmosphere in Basta’s is always happy and casual, and our server, Katherine, was wonderful.
If you do not like Italian wine, this is not the restaurant for you as the list is totally Italian. As fans of Italian wines, we loved it. It has well-known wines from major regions such as Piemonte and Toscana, but also has wines from all over the country, many of which will be difficult to find elsewhere. Most of the prices are very reasonable for a Portland restaurant. Even as a retired wine retailer, there were surprises for me. We chose a red from Liguria which was new to me – Riccardo Bruna’s Bansìgu – and it went very well with the Amatriciana. With my coffee I had a glass of Chinato to round out the evening.
We will not wait as long to return to Basta’s again. In the past we have never had a disappointing meal, and even with lesser food, the wine list would still be an attraction.
When going out I like to enjoy my cocktail and not 2 to 3 large menus and a folder or book of wine lists on the table. When going out I feel I have bought the table for the night. When going out I do not want my entree showing up when I am enjoying my appetizer plate. When going out
I do not go out on Fridays and Saturdays. I love Bastas and the staff accommodated my requests in every way. We enjoyed our 41st Anniversary. thank you Bastas
We were here to celebrate a birthday. The chocolate Torte that was ordered by my daughter was completely burnt. Very disappointed!
Service and food, awesome, as always. The bummer was the family that had a 4 yo in melt-down mode that was screaming. They belonged at Chuckie Cheese.
Basta's is a favorite place to eat and has been for many years. This time our food was warm, not hot and we had a screaming baby next to us. We were dining with friend we hadn't seen in years so it made visiting difficult. They finally took the baby outside so the night was saved. Never had a problem with the food being not hot enough, but it was still delicious and won't stop us from coming back. Next time we'll say something.
Charming restaurant in a vibrant neighborhood. Friendly, fast service and good food.
Wonderful. Ate here two nights with natives who had never been. Good all around in food. Great desserts.
Met some friends for dinner before a Thorns game. The service was fantastic and the salmon ravioli was EXCELLENT! Such a great quaint place and perfect location!!
food was even better than I remembered, and our waitress was GREAT.
This was a great find - it has been here for years but the unimpressive exterior (former Tastee Freeze) kept us from trying it - now it is likely to be a weekly experience. It is not "fancy" just great everyday Italian. We had four different meals - each of them excellent. The service was outstanding - informative and attentive but not overbearing. The only criticism is that the wine list is too limited to Italian wines - not the best for Cab fans. Next time we will bring our own and pay the corkage fee.
we LOVE the margherita pizza, the pork tenderloin, the gnocchi, the finnochio avocado -- well, i guess we love everything! especially shelby the waitress.
LOVED IT! Very good wine list but I went with the house wine becaue it was so good! This place was so good we went back the next night.
One of my very favorite places for dinner after Mass on Saturday night. Always a fine meal & very good service. Love the Cafe Basta.
Would come more often but we live in Washougal, WA.
The razor clams were devine. The service just leaves one smiling. A place to return to often.
This was our fourth night in a row dining in a foodie city. We were disappointed by some of the prior restaurants, however Bastas was amazing. We will definitely be going back. The food was great and the staff very friendly and helpful.
Outstanding service, mediocre food with the exception of the grilled calamari, which was well prepared and tasty. Octopus salad, overlooked octopus. Linguine w clams, not flavorful. Reasonably priced and nice-sized portions, we were happy to get a table easily, and our server was excellent. Ask for the bread while you wait, that was delicious.
The staff could not have been nicer and more fun. The food was great, the service was perfect and I remembered why I love this spot. Will be back again soon...Thanks to all of you for making for a great night out.
