Amazing food and great atmosphere! My boyfriend and I went for a date night and made a reservation ahead of time and it was the best experience ever! Parking was a little hectic, but we went at 6:00 pm, and for a Saturday night it did not seem that busy yet.
If they are staying at the hotel, yep, great place for a bite. But the building is loud; we made reservations but we’re out at a tabletop, which we thought was weird. The food was good, but we aren’t 100% sure that my husband’s order was what he ordered. It could have been his fault, but we’ll never know.
If you have time to venture out into the city, try that - there are a lot of places with more advanced menus, prices and atmosphere.
Service is ALWAYS good here—-and it starts at the beginning when you enter and walk to the receptionist’s desk. Very welcoming.
on a very cold night the smell of the wood burning pizza oven, and an open fireplace provided a welcoming atmosphere.
We had a very enjoyable evening. Great ambiance. Cool vibe. Great service. Our waitress was sweet, very attentive and knowledgeable. The food was very good. I wish I would have tried the pizza...plan to do so next time. Looking forward to the next time.
Cozy, energetic and delicious. Great service and simple, inventive Italian at moderate prices. Great for a date, happy hour, a night out with friends, etc.
Very good happy hour deals - pizza is amazing and space is great - very intimate, cozy, and cool.
Basso is always a great time. I enjoy going here with a group, or to grab a drink at the bar with a date.
Service was excellent but that's about it. My favorite dish, Mafalda Ragu, is no longer on the menu. Replaced by mafalda with a white wine sauce. My date's hamburger bun was stale. And the brussel sprout appetizer was more like a side dish in terms of portion, about 12 pieces.
waitress took remaining food without asking if we were done while we were sitting right there. It happened so quick we were unable to say anything before she took the plate and placed something on top of it. Also, after we received food, very rarely were we checked on. It was a large group of us with 4 tables. Otherwise, orders were accurate but was surprised when bar closed at 12 with last call on new years eve. If holding a new years eve event, should probably presume to accept bar orders until 12:30 latest
I was disappointed that my date, who was on crutches, needed to hobble down their steep stairs to the lower level restaurant. Wine was less than expected. Food was good for the cost.
food was good , very hot temp in restaurant, very loud.
We ordered salad and pizza. Both were well prepared. We found it a little noisy.
However, Basso is not the only restaurant challenged by high noise level.
Enjoyed the atmosphere the most. A few more menu choices would be great to have.
Had made a reservation and tried to give us a tall table near bar but that is not private enough
so we had to ask several times for a booth with not being offered it at first but eventually did
get a booth. I would guess because there was only 2 of us the booths hold 4 but the tall tables
are not for our liking. Don't like someone sitting behind us in an open area.
Happy hour prices are a great, but even the regular prices are reasonable. Food is delicious. Good portions, too.
Servers and hosts/hostesses are accomodating for large or small parties, even with kids.
Venue is loud and can be hard to hear, but it's a positive vibe.
Warm inside due to open kitchen.
Great food and atmosphere. Only issue was that it was SUPER hot. Need to work on making the temperature a bit more comfortable.
Great “Al-Dente” pasta! As good as being on The Hill, without going very far. We will be back!
It was a great ambiance, just way too loud. Our server was able to move us from a table to a booth, which helped make it more intimate for date night.
We enjoyed our waitress and the food was good but not very good. I ordered my burger medium and it arrived well done. I was with three other people and didn’t wish to make them wait so I didn’t ask the waitress to return the burger and have a correctly done one delivered. All was not lost as the waitress was pleasant, the beer was Cole and its a pleasant space. We will return again at some point but if the next time we hope the food will be cooked as requested.
Food and service were fabulous. Wish the sound system wasn't quite as loud as it was. Otherwise, it was a great meal and worked out perfectly before our show at the Fox.
Food was delicious, staff friendly, atmosphere great. The ONLY downfall was that our food took a long time to come out, but they comp'd our meal, so I still loved it all. Would definitely recommend.
It was a great meal. Would 100% go back there
About an hour into our dinner, which was a 7 pm reservation, the manager came over and asked if the hostess explained to us that there was an 8:15 party of 6 waiting for our table. We all had full drinks and about half of us were eating still. I have never been asked to have my party of 10 with a 7pm reservation to leave for an 8:15 reservation coming after us. How would you serve 10 people in an hour and 15 minutes? I was APPALLED. My family has owned a restaurant for 55 years and I would never ask a 10 top table (who mind you ended up spending $450) to please hurry. Don’t book a table that close together. And it is definitely something that wasn’t mentioned to us. I booked the table weeks ago. I actually originally had wanted a 7:30 reservation and was told when I called there was a 30 top for 7:30, so could we please come at 7. No mention of needing to leave my 8:15, as I would have declined. We have come here the last 4 years the Friday after thanksgiving as an annual dinner with friends who come to STL for the holiday, and we will not be returning. This is poor business practice to ask your patrons to leave!
Your Magherita Pizza is usually very good. This is our go to place to get it. Couple times back we ordered your pizza and it was burned. We let it go. Mind you, pizza is not cheap considering the size. So, we gave it a try after several months and see if it has changed. BURNT AGAIN! Pretty insulting to the customers being served with burned pizza.
If I may suggest to clean up the burner too. You served us with pizza that has burnt particles on the crust.
It's reallllyyy insulting when you serve us that. I had to scrape it so I can eat the pizza.
Our waitress made the experience fantastic.. she went above and beyond. Lindsay was spectacular!! The manager also made sure we were happy as there was a food allergy in our group.. food was fantastic!!
This is a great place for a happy hour but it is loud. Even at the booths, it can be hard to hear your partners. The noise is a mix of music mostly but also the low ceilings echo the voices of people all around the bar. Quite diners should seek a table at the far end, closer to the kitchen. Portions are smaller but not unsatisfying.
I always like the restaurant and thought of it as more of a quaint nice place to have a conversation. The music was WAY TOO LOUD and ANNOYIng. Why would you make it that high, ruined the entire night
Not hidden though in the basement, Basso delivers a very steady performance for food and drinks. A good beer, wine and cocktail menu mixes well with a more limited food options. Limited does not mean bad in any way...the food is very well-done. Quite noisy, not a great place for intimate conversation.
Great place to eat! The food is fresh and the place is energetic!
Basso's is a solid place to go ... food is consistently good. Great tomato and mozzarella salad with balsamic glaze. Very good pastas and pizzas. Their burger is terrific. I think they have a good selection of wine and beer. It's fun, a little loud and energetic when it's busy, but nice place to go with friends.
We arrived earlier than our reservations on a Friday evening and they were able to seat us which was amazing and very helpful for our situation. The food and service was excellent. Thanks again, we’ll be back
Food very good but noise level was almost unbearable
Highly energetic bordering on extremely noisy but a great environment; not for those looking for a quiet Friday night dinner. Custom drinks are inventive, and a solid list of beers, wines, and mixed drinks.
Menu may seem limited but look closer you’ll find something you’re willing to try and won’t be disappointed. Winners: Truffel oil fries, Brussels sprouts (hell yes!), and the Emo Cover Band pizza.
Waitstaff are attentive, friendly, and great at explaining why Basso is a bit different than other restaurants. Have a question? They’ll get you an answer.
*If you’re going during a peak time, spring for the valet parking, you won’t find a spot unless you’re willing to wait and circle the lot for half hour -minimum. Reservation on peaks days/nights is suggested.
Good food in a very unique setting. The restaurant is upscale but not pretentious. Our server was really nice.
We loved everything about this place except the noise level. I expect noise at a busy restaurant and it normally doesn't bother me that much, but I thought it was very noisy and we were there on a Thursday night so there wasn't a live band or anything out of the ordinary, just lots of noise. There was one small glitch, but it was taken care of. Nothing that had anything to do with seating or service, but I booked through OpenTable and that was fine. We decided to change the time of our reservation to 30 minutes later. I called the restaurant directly, which might have been the mistake. It was all fine to change it. We arrived, I saw my name on the reservation sheet with the correct time, were seated and all went well. Then, after we left the restaurant I received an email from you that we were a no show for our reservation. However, when I explained the situation, it was taken care of between you and Basso and I was notified of that. It was a very quick response. I don't know if it happens often, but in this instance, the communication could have been better between OpenTable and Basso. However, I may have messed up by calling them directly instead of you. All in all, everything was perfect. I would definitely go back and definitely recommend it to a friend.
I usually love basso happy hour, but this past visit was less than satisfactory. The truffle fries (which used to be to die for) were cold and soggy. We were there early with lots of empty tables, and could barely get the bartender to check on us/take our order. I hope this was just one bad experience of many good.
We had a large group and the staff was extremely accommodating and our waitress did an amazing job separating checks and taking care of us all evening.
We absolutely loved this place. Justin, our server, did a great job! Our food was to die for. We got brussel sprouts for our appetizer(which had great flavor). And shared the Lamb Ragu.. i think.. lol it was Delicious! Im happy we shared because there was a lot.
I can see why some people would not like the noise level because it is a bit loud. But i would prefer loud over quiet. I couldnt hear anyone elses conversation but mine. I had a lot of fun. Thank you Basso for creating an even better date for me and my man!
I will definitely recommend it!
The food was good although the pizzas seemed a little overdone. The waitress was nice but not really attentive. It was, however, a good time. We were a large group and felt very comfortable.
Love the place. One nit-pick is that the TV screens are pretty bright and slightly alter the dimly lit vib.
