Basil Seasonal Dining Ratings and Reviews
Great restaurant in the heart of Carmel. We dined outside as our two dogs were with us. They were as welcomed as we were. Wonderful, creative food. Beautiful ambience on the outside patio. Our only complaint was the service was very slow. It was a crowded Friday night and we visited with the patrons around us who also had their dogs with them. Even with slow service, the evening was extremely pleasant.
Good meal, though nothing great. Too noisy inside, with tables too close together for comfortable conversation. Moved outside and it was much more viable, if a bit chilly. Food was good if not memorable. Octopus a bit chewier than I like & it's only flavor was from the smoke of the grill. Other items were fine, though nothing outstanding. I liked this place; just didn't love it.
We had a group of 5 so we were able to get a reservation outside. The food was delicious and everything we didn't get that we saw being delivered to the other tables looked great too (steak with a poached egg on top). The cocktails were great too! Would definitely come back. The only thing that wasn't exceptional was the calamari, mine was a little too tough, but other people at the table had it and liked there's.
The first time we had dinner here a few weeks ago we were so impressed with the fine quality of the food, we thought it was one of the best meals we ever had, and my husband expressed his appreciation to the chef/owner. However, when we returned there on the Labor Day weekend for my birthday, we agreed it was one of the worst meals we'd had in quite a while. The octopus was inedible, charred and tough, so they brought us a new one, which was somewhat better but still dry. The first plate had two legs, but the second plate contained only one, and when we asked our server about it, she said they were running out (although they still charged the full $20). Our entrees (cod and beef cheeks) were both bland, the extreme opposite of the delicate flavors we had experienced previously. I know this restaurant consistently receives rave reviews, but were were completely disappointed with our second visit, and don't plan to return again. We expressed this to our server upon paying, and she said it was probably because they were busy. Why would the sauces and flavors be affected by more people... unless they didn't have time to add salt and seasonings? We heard the hostesses and servers commenting several times throughout the evening about them being "triple booked," but feel like a professional restaurant should be able to prepare and plan for a busy weekend in a tourist locale. I am glad we had this experience because I had planned to take a group of visitors there for a nice dinner in a couple of weeks, and now I know to choose somewhere else.
I made a reservation 2+ months in advance. When I got there and asked for an outside table I was told they were booked. I went quietly to my inside seat. No ac mind you. Couple number 2 came in and were told the same thing. The difference was that they made their reservation that day and voiced their displeasure at being seated inside. Magically the hostess found a table inside. Shame on me and shame on the hostess. I won't be back.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meals at Basil! Our waiter was charming and friendly, the food was delightful, and we had a grand old time striking up a conversation with the folks at the neighboring table, which was altogether possible because of the friendly atmosphere at Basil. We each ordered specials, which were delicious. And for dessert, we shared a berry cobbler that was made with some sort of raspberry/blackberry hybrid that I can't recall the name of, but which was certainly something we don't have out here on the east coast (something with an L) - delicious!!
This is a great place to go before theater, a business lunch, or a romantic dinner. They have a great seasonal menu, but they also have some great favorites. Like the vegetable ravioli dish which my dad cannot pass up.they do meets amazingly! I've had veal, goat, boat and pork. It's always perfectly done. However, I have not had the same experience with fish. It often is dry and overdone. We've given him several tries. But it is easy to eat around that. Service is attentive, but not overbearing. We love to sit out on the patio! We will definitely be back again and again
I'm disappointed with my dining experience. I emailed Basil several days ahead of time asking if they would be able to accommodate me as I'm vegan and my husband is dairy free. I asked if they had other vegan items aside from the one main and also if they had vegan dessert other than sorbet as I would be celebrating my birthday. It took them awhile to seat us despite our reservation, service was slow all night, although both servers were very friendly. I was very disappointed that they had no other vegan-friendly options aside from the one main, so we were both hungry when we left. The first server asked if we would like bread after we told them we were vegan and I asked if it was vegan and they thought about it and said no. Then the other server brought us bread out anyway. I was excited thinking maybe they had made a mistake and it was after all vegan. It was not and they had to take it away as I hungrily eyed it. They also confused vegan with gluten twice. At the end of the meal when I asked about dessert, I asked if anything other than the sorbet was vegan and the server started telling me about a flourless chocolate cake. I almost fell off my chair in anticipation when I again wanted to clarify if it was indeed vegan (same server all night) and she paused and told me that no, but it was gluten free. The sorbet was fine, nothing special and certainly not worth the $10 for the small amount served. The main dish we received was quite excellent. The vegetables were perfectly roasted and everything was very flavourful. I found it a bit expensive for what it was, and would have been happy if I could have at least ordered a side of rice or something to go with it as it was just mostly vegetables (no grains or protein). And I do appreciate the friendliness of the servers and that it was dog-friendly. I am very disappointed though as I was looking forward to a wonderful birthday celebration and took the time to email the restaurant ahead of time.
I'm not sure why they say this is an Italian restaurant. It is definitely not. It is beautiful fresh cuisine. The ingredients are always superb. They do magical things with meat. I love when they have venison on the menu. Although they did have a month of goat and it was also very good. However, the couple times I tried to have fish it was always over cooked. The vegetable ravioli dish is a must. My dad can never pass it up. And if you like soup, The soup of the day is usually very special. The outdoor dining is very sweet. And if you have a dog it will feel welcome. This is definitely one of our local gems.
Had a business meeting with a large group and the restaurant handled it well in the limited area they had. The food was very good as was the service. Nice wine list rounded out a unique menue. Octupus and meatballs a must to start out your night. Deserts were excellent. Reserved confidently!
Found this little gem before going to a concert at the Sunset Center (two blocks away). There were a number of interesting items on the menu including several gluten-free options for my wife. She ordered the chicken which takes all of the 30 minutes the menu cautions but well worth the wait. It was flavorful and very succulent. I ordered the pork chop which was one of the best pork chops I have every had. It was very tender and paired well with the polenta. We started inside but a large group came and became quite loud. We requested to move outside and were immediately accommodated and really enjoyed the outside dining even though it was a typical Carmel summer evening (cold and damp). Great location and fantastic service and food.
We went to Basil on a Saturday night. It was extraordinarily loud and difficult to hear one another. There was nothing interesting or unusual about the food - rather boring. I had Ravioli, lentil souo, coliflower, asparagus. The service was average. And the prices were high. Really nothing too good to say ....but you can't easily walk to the sunset theater from there.
Disappointing. Fish was overdone and dry. White wine was not cold. Red wines - a cab and a pinot noir - were good but small pours. Service a bit slow. Took a while for our meals to arrive.
Mushrooms were the highlight of my "special of the night" black cod. Grilled asparagus were chewy. My husband enjoyed the braised beef cheeks quite a bit.
The only knock is that it was a little over-priced. But, then again, we were in Carmel so that is par for the course. The patio is cute and tucked away. Very romantic for a date. The menu was unique, creative, and fun. I had the goat and it was excellent. All in all, it was a very good restaurant. We took our little children and they enjoyed it. Service was good and laid back.
We have been coming to Basil since their doors opened under the previous owner.
We come from Aptos to Carmel for a consistently delicious meal, great service with fun and informed waiters, a good selection of wines and drinks.
We continue to recommend to friends and family for all of the above reasons.
I needed special consideration to comply with my medically-required diet restrictions. I expected it would be difficult but I was wrong. Our waitress was incredibly accommodating and my grilled vegetable-only meal was fabulous. There was quite an assortment and the carrot puree base was wonderful. They really went out of their way to make it nice, including the birthday surprise at the end. My sweetheart had the black linguini with seafood which he enjoyed - there wasn't a nibble left. When we're next back in Carmel I will definitely want to return!
