About Basho Japanese Brasserie
Basho is a Japanese word that is roughly translated as "location" or "a space where activities occur". It could be a family gathering, socializing with friends, or a business event; moreover, it could be the setting for an unforgettable experience. We call this setting "Basho".
Basho is a contemporary Izakaya brasserie where dishes are prepared in two separate areas: the principal kitchen and the sushi bar. Rather than offering individual starters and main courses, Basho serves dishes that are designed for sharing and are brought to the table steadily and continuously throughout the meal.
Your server will be happy to assist you in choosing dishes, such as our Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice Appetizer, which is highly popular or our specially crafted 1338 Signature Roll. They tried to seat us in the big dining room but it was fairly empty and dark so we opted to sit in the bar area. We ate on the early side so I'm sure the place filled up after we left. There was a small but very good wine list with a great American wine , which most Japanese restaurants don't offer. We go to Nobu in NYC and London quite often and I would say the food is on the same par.
they were able to accommodate our vegetarian requests with substitutions. my daughter thought the teriyaki dish and miso soup were extremely flavorful, while my husband and i enjoyed the fried rice and rice bowl. It was so good that we were in pain from overeating. the service was pleasant and attentive
Eaten here many times but not since they changed management. The FOOD was great. Service was the problem. We had no idea who our Waiter was. One person led us to a table. Another took the Order. Another brought the Order (but not exactly what we has ordered). We had to ask someone else who was passing for what was missing. Another cleared our table. We had to ask a Busboy for more Tea which he brought us. We then asked the guy who seemed to be in charge that we needed more Ginger and Wasabe which is what we had placed with the original order. It took 10 minutes for someone else to bring those items. We asked the "Manager" for the check. Someone gave us the check........we completed it and had to wave the Manger to take it which he did. After what seemed like 15 minutes the Manager was seen handing the credit card bill to our original waiter whom we hadn't seen since placing the Order. Someone else brought back the receipt. Seems like they have diversified the whole experience of dining there instead of developing somewhat of a relationship with you Waiter.
For me it was a turnoff and I wont eat there for a while. Maybe good for transients who don't know better. But if this persists....stick to the 15% tip....or no tip.
We had a delicious dinner here before attending a Red Sox game 2 blocks away. It was easy to get a reservation. The place was quiet and it was easy to converse with our friends. The sushi and scallop plate were superb. The waiter even made a dish not on the menu for one of our party. We will definitely be going back!
This is a comfortable place to eat, fun casual with a hint of upscale tech. Drinks are reasonable, with some interesting twists. Similarly, the food is basically sushi, but also has some twists on the usual. The miso soup was more substantial than most. I'd recommend the pork bun, the shumai (with a tasty topping, not the usual soy ginger sauce), the Phoenix roll, and, for those who eschew raw fish, the shrimp tempura roll. The spicy tuna roll and spicy yellowtail hand roll were both good, but could have had more fire. Service was efficient casual, and the waiter did a good job explaining some unusual items - and the manager stopped by to make sure that everything was okay too. The four of us in our party all enjoyed our meals and definitely would go back again. This is a place that you could stop in for a quick bite at the bar, or spend a whole evening at a table trying a variety of items.
We came here to have dinner before going to the House of blues for a show. The restaurant was spacious and because of the high ceiling I could even hear from across the table. The drinks and food were delicious. Our waitress was very attentive. The owner/manager came to our table to greet us. That was nice!
I have been a very enthusiastic fan of this restaurant for quite awhile. In fact, I'd go out of my way just to get a steamed pork belly bun.
I only dined there a few weeks ago, and as usual, had a top notch experience. Recently, I brought a new group of friends to try the restaurant, and was quite disappointed by the new menu, offering and pricing model. Food portions and quality seem to have taken a step back, but prices went up. Two of our cocktails tasted as though they were mixed with the wrong liquor. My friends had no reference to compare because they'd never been before -- but all parties were underwhelmed.
We didn't say anything at the time because it was apparent our waiter was trying to adjust to the new food menu as well and seemed a bit scattered. But when I saw the price of the bill and reflected on the quality and taste of what we ordered, it was not worth the investment.
I shall considered visiting sometime in the future -- and will simply hope I experienced an evening of growing pains and not the new standard for Basho.
Basho is Douzo's sister restaurant..And what a great find in the Fenway! The food is fresh, the drinks are delicious and the staff is super friendly. They have a new menu so check it out! Great place to also kick back and have a few drinks as they have a late night menu
My boyfriend was served undercooked pork, and after we brought it up, our waiter awkwardly took it back with no apology. When we brought this up, we were only met with a terse apology. The "fried chicken" was a meager portion of what looked like bufalo wings. Food was very underwhelming and would not recommend, and the slow and awkward service was not of any help.
With that said, drinks are good! And not terribly priced. Overall, I would not recommend.
FOod was delicious, service not great. After receiving two wrong dishes we were served the correct order which, again was delicious. A bit frustrating to wait so long for not one, but two, incorrect dishes. I am willing give them another try because the food was excellent once we got it!
Our experience at Basho was amazing! Our waitress was very sweet and warm and helped us select our dinner. They entire staff was great with our 3 year old toddler and accommodated her dinner selection. The restaurant is well decorated and we look forward to returning soon!
The sushi was delicious, and with carefully chosen roe on top of both rolls that we ordered I felt like we were splurging. The spicy tuna appetizer was amazing, I almost ordered us a second dish of it. We came for a date night after going to the MFA, and even for a couple who has been on a thousand dates this felt special. We will definitely come back.
Rolls we loosely packed. Three rolls tightly squeezed into a small platter plate. We were told that was all they had available though the place was far from full. Very disappointed in the quality of the rolls and presentation. We should have sent them back and demanded quality.
