We stopped in at Bascule for a post concert sip and were very pleasantly surprised. The interior has a hip, urban vibe, cement floors, minimalist furniture -interesting music that ranged from house to 70's oldies. I ordered a prosecco, my cousins wife ordered a Marlborough region Sauvignon Blanc and my cousin ordered an Italian red which unfortunately was not available. The staff really worked with him to find another wine that grew in a similar clime and would share the same properties. They suggested a Bordeaux which was absolutely delicious! As they did not have the bottle he had wanted they gave him the Bordeaux for the price of the Italian....nice touch! Food was great! we ordered two buns - one pulled pork, the other meatball, someone's Italian grandmother must have been in the kitchen - the meatball was fabulous! We also tried the flatbread of the day poached pear with arugula and feta cheese, delish! and a shrimp/quinoa salad that was also excellent! We left happy and will return!!

We have been to Bascule numerous times, but it looks like the restaurant is now permanently closed and no longer listed on OpenTable. That is very disappointing. Food is excellent, drinks are very good. One of the nicest options for dining on Taylor Street near UIC.

I don't know how they do it, but it's the juiciest, most delicious chicken ever made. Flatbread was delicious and appropriately sized for 2. Waiter recommended a really delicious and reasonably priced glass of wine. Dessert was a simple chocolate brownie somehow cooked to ooey-gooey perfection. Can't wait to go back!

We found this place when we went by during the recent Taylor Street Fest, We walked in just to take a look. A friendly waiter asked us if we had questions. We stated just looking around and he then proceeded to show us around and provide us a mini wine tasting. We decided to come back 2 weeks later with 2 other couples. It was outstanding. Note only was our server Danielle very helpful with the menu she also helped with their outstanding wine list. We asked some questions about the wine and the next thing I know she is back with 3 bottles for us to try before we order. The wine list is not pretentious and they do not make you feel like an idiot if you ask some inane wine question. This is what we like. A fun, low key atmosphere with great food, drink and terrific service. The other couples we were with were both very happy with the choice. It was a fun night and we will definitely be back.

Wanted good wine and food offerings that included something light on a really hot day. After arriving here, Linda made us feel right at home, and helped us select a nice Rose'. Our entrees were the mussels, which were fresh and delicious, and a flatbread special that included steak and Gruyere - nice! Dessert was awesome - a pear tart with a side of homemade strawberry sorbet, which went well with our Rose.

I am not sure what this restaurant/wine bar is trying to achieve. I have now dined here 3 times and don't understand, nor particularly enjoy the curious mixture of loud hard rock music and fine wines. Also the food menu is limited. At any rate, I hope the restaurant succeeds--I think it could be a very nice addition to the neighborhood.

I heard so much about this place and had to try it, so I went with my boyfriend and his parents. It's quiet so you can definitely talk and be heard which is nice when visiting with people and catching up, however it made it feel "dead" or not as hip as I have heard it to be. We had this fantastic pinot grigio which has a lovely pink tone- I wish I could find it on the menu online.. (the website is quite awful) anyway- the TUNA entree is delicious and the rabbit as well! The tuna tartare was great for sharing as were the mussels. I wish it was more crowded but nonetheless we enjoyed ourselves.

This is a enjoyable little wine bar with a modest but creative menu and a really nice feel. It is in the same building as Urban Union and proves a worthy successor. Notably they have a creative cocktail list in which the cocktails try to catch characteristics of various wine varietals., say a bordeaux, without including any of the wines as an ingredient. The one I tried certainly succeeded.

Very small portions of very good yellowfin tuna and of wine. That's fine. But then giant slabs of just two cheeses on the cheese plate (who can eat a big chunk of blue cheese?), no fruit or honey to go with, and a watery sauce for the fry bread. Overall disappointing but with potential.

Great food presented in the most exquisite form; a feeling that you're welcomed back to someone's home for dinner. Linda is great with diners (sometimes too touchy); so knowledgeable about the menu items and libations. She allows enough space for you to enjoy conversation without feeling abandoned. All of these make for a great dining experience.

The menu provided everything we had hoped for. Fine seafood, great presentation, warm and friendly service. Four of us sat towards the rear of the restaurant, away from the bar area which was "lively". It was a treat, on a Friday night, to be able to converse without yelling! My only teeny gripe is that our appetizer course arrived before our initial cocktail was served. However the drinks arrived soon after we had pointed out this fact. We will definitely return.

Ok so it's not strictly a French menu but the wine is terrific, the menu is diverse and well suited to sharing, and the room is a great place to linger with friends. The kitchen is open late and the bar doesn't close until the patrons run out of gas. Great neighborhood spot and welcome addition to a street dominated by pizza and pasta.

Save for the noise level (which was adjusted when we asked our waiter if could be lowered) Bascule delivered. Attentive staff, excellent food - entrees on the smallish side, generous salads), a glorious array of wines - what more does one need? Have already told several people about the place and look forward to returning. Bascule is a welcome addition to a shrinking list of South-Side accessible restaurants. While not formally "South", it's easy to get to, avoiding the daunting traffic mess that currently plagues those of us who regularly travel north to favorite Loop restaurants. Parking is a problem but if one is persistent, snagging a street spot does happen. Add an extra 15 minutes to insure an on time arrival.

Second time here and it got better. Menu is evolving and diverse. Great feel to bar and back dining area. We brought out kid and they created food that he could eat. He's eats better than I did growing up. It is so worth the truck across town from Avondale. Crispy smelt started us off. Skirt steak was picked its flavor and my wife's tuna was out of a good magazine and tasted as good. still ine of the best rye manhattans I've had in the city. Dessert was out of this world peanut buttery, chocolate, salted goodness. Try this place out before it gets too hot and your waiting a few months for a reservation.

We enjoyed the hamburger and lamb meatballs, especially. Don't order the locally-brewed diet cola - not worth it. We were a little annoyed that we were not asked whether we wanted this instead of our order for diet coke. The wines were very good. Drinks are over-priced but par for the course in Chicago. Food is excellent, however, and reasonably priced for Taylor Street. Service was friendly and timely. Will definitely return.

It was all very in-season and fresh with interesting mixes of ingredients. The oysters with the watermelon and lemonade foam were so different and bright! The wine list was huge and we both got really perfect recommendations from our waiter. Plus, the wine cocktails were very different and delightful! We had a very nice time.

My daughter (a chef) picked this place for her birthday celebration from Zagat's list of best new restaurants to try in Chicago. We had our own little dining room with curtains which would accommodate a group of 6 comfortably. Could still see the rest of the tables on both sides of our table. Service was very helpful, knowledgeable, and spot on. Food was delicious with a nice variety to select from. I'm not very adventurous when it comes to trying new things. Glad I did. Our group tried numerous items and easily shared them...like tapas dining. Burger was yummy as was their Brussels sprouts dish. The fried bread w/pistachios and vanilla bean ice cream topped off a very pleasant experience. Can't wait for the brunch to start in late March.

My first visit, and certainly NOT my last visit, to Bascule was a positive, fun evening. I highly recommend this bistro for a casual night out, a girls night out, romantic dinner, or special occasion. Our waiter was attentive and extremely knowledgable about the menu and wines, and he had wonderful suggestions for pairings. Several people in my group tried the short ribs (excellent), and the desserts were also amazing. The vibe was lively and casual, but one can easily see how much thought went into the menus, decor, everything! I highly recommend Bascule, and I look forward to my next visit!

We had a last minute opportunity to get a babysitter for Valentine's Day, as we had what we thought was our official celebration the week before. So I quick went on Open Table to get a reservation and found Bascule. We love the Taylor St neighborhood and the reviews had nothing but great things to say. Boy what a score! We had the Boar's shoulder, tuna, and brussels Sprouts. Cannot say enough on how good they were. The polenta was the tastiest we have ever had. Even if you do not like brussels sprouts you must try these. We heard the short ribs were great but where intrigued by the description of the tuna and boar. They have combinations that are making my mouth water typing about this 7 days later. One of the other reasons I picked it was because of the wine selection but their house cocktail selection once again intrigued us and we never made it to the wine. Oh well, just an excuse to go back. Service was awesome as well. They really have the right balance of friendly and accommodating without being over the top. Just a very warm atmosphere. Yes it was Valentine's day but I think it is pretty safe to say that this is the vibe there every day. We went to an upscale the Saturday before for Restaurant Week spent more than twice as much and by comparison was only half as impressed. We will absolutely be back and have suggested it to several friends. If you like just right flavorful combinations this is must have destination.
