In 1982, NYC restaurateur Bart Ruggiero brought his famous recipes to downtown Matawan, selecting a location where suburban hospitality meets sophisicated appetites. My wife and I went to Bart’s for Valentine’s Day. As usual, everyone was friendly and our waitress was excellent. My wife and I shared a Burrata salad which was delicious. For the main course I had the sweet potato ravioli which was excellent as usual and she had the Salmon Brettone which she thoroughly enjoyed. We were too full for dessert . Excellent meal and great service made for a very nice evening.

I decided to give this restaurant a try for a pre-Valentine's day date night. It's a nice looking place inside and out, but the decor is probably going to be considered a bit outdated by anyone under forty. In fact most of the patrons in the bar area appeared to be seniors, and regular customers. From the moment we entered, the staff was very courteous and service was quick. We had arrived about 15 minutes early for our reservation, and they offered to let us sit at the bar and listen to the live music if we chose, but instead had no problem seating us promptly. My girlfriend had the french onion soup, and the zuppe di pesce for dinner. She enjoyed them both. I also had the french onion soup, and the sweet potato ravioli. While the flavor of the ravioli was perfect, the centers were cold. I'm guessing that they probably had been frozen, and when cooked to al dente, it wasn't enough to completely thaw out the center. Overall we enjoyed the night, and will probably be back to try them again sometime in the future.

First time at this restaurant. Kitchen was shorthanded so Bart's wife who serves as hostess as well told us that even though we had a reservation we'd have to wait which was not an issue for us. Following a short wait she seated us and proceeded to buy us a cocktail for our "trouble", which was very generous.
Service was a bit slow but nothing terrible. Waiter was very responsive as well.
Food was terrific. We had the sweet potato ravioli and Caesar salad as appetizers both of which we highly recommend. Overall, our meal was terrific.
We will definitely return and have already recommended it to our friends.

My wife and I hadn't been to Bart's in some time. In fact, the last time had to be 4 years prior (we couldn't remember why) but what a great choice. Kelly was great with very attentive service and recommendations, food was well prepared and presented and delicious. We do not plan to stay away this long next time we go for dinner on a Saturday night.

I was looking for a local Italian restaurant to have a nice dinner with my daughter. When we got there we were treated like family. Hostess was very welcoming, and our waitress was an angel! Made excellent recommendations, and was so attentive! The alfresco area was so cozy and charming we loved it! We will DEF Be Back! Btw food was fabulous!

We have been going to Bart's for over 10 years and we just love it! It is a warm and wonderful place,,,the owners and staff are terrific and always make us feel at home there. We've had many family "celebrations" there and hope to continue for years to come!

Dinner was really good with only 2 exceptions. First of all, the restaurant was a bit chilly. We needed to request that they turn down the AC (twice actually). Not quite sure why they need to keep it that cold. The second thing was that they did not have any clams. We found that out after we had already ordered; so we had to reorder. I would think they should have known that when they gave us the menus. Other than this, the food was very tasty and the service was very good.

We ended up not eating here. The smell of mold hit you as soon as you walked in the door. The place was also very dated. Would not recommend to anyone.

Want to support local neighborhood restaurants and haven't been to Bart's in a number of years. While the restaurant itself is "dated" the food is good quality and the service is friendly. While the restaurant wasn't packed by any means the food did take some time to deliver. Waiter was very good and apologized and for me and my friend it was ok because we weren't in a rush. If your looking to get in out you may want to stay away. I had the French onion soup for starters, and the shrimp and chicken franchaise with potato & veggies. Both were good. Not great but solid. overall, decent place, solid. I will be back to support the local eatery and owners.

Amazing. Bart's food is simply amazing. His wife runs the front while Bart does the food. Execellent team. They've been around for over 30 years. The man can cook.

Excellent food and service. This restaurant is a hidden gem. The sweet potato ravioli are especially good and have been a Bart's standby for years. My wife and I were there for Valentines Day dinner and despite being crowded, everything was fresh, hot and served in a timely and efficient manner. Have been going to Bart's for years and I highly recommend it.

Everyone was so nice, from the greeting from the hostess, to great waiter Brandon, to who I assumed was Bart who wished us a Happy Valentine's Day as we left. The homemade pappardelle with crab, scallop & shrimp in the lobster cream sauce was divine. Tiramisu was luscious. Definitely would go back.

Absolutely horrifying experience. Stay far far away from this place. We should have left when we go there and were the only people in the place, but we decided to give it a shot and boy what a mistake. The food was absolutely horrible, tasteless, obviously made from frozen (and not defrosted) ingredients. My son had a burger (ordered well done) which was burnt on the outside but pretty much raw in the middle. The pasta tasteless, shrimp obviously frozen and not defrosted before cooking.. bad, just bad. The place does not even try to be good or better.

Housed in an old church building this restaurant (who is operating over 30 years) is a find! The service is good, the menu is smaller but focused on what they do well. There are dinner specials to choose from as well.

The steamed clams in broth are wonderful and the French Onion soup is one of the BEST I have had!

The Dinner portions are good and worth the prices. Dessert menu is limited but offers a good choice for diners.

We were welcomed by the owner who was a sweetheart and genuinely cared about our experience.

I'll definitely be back!

Our first time in this charming 1850 former Episcopal church. The staff loves their work and it shows in their attentiveness and energy.

We went to Bart's Restaurant for the first time on Saturday. I was very pleased with the food and the service. The restaurant is housed in an old church, which adds to its charm. The food was very good. I had the sweet potato ravioli and my husband had the pasta and clam sauce. Both were delicious. We would definitely go back.

The waitress was very attentive, and always smiling! The food from the soup French onion and Pasta Faglioli was some of the best we've had. Apps you have to try the Sweet Potato Raviolli great!! I had the Barts Special for the main coarse it was spot on! I highly recommend visiting Barts!

I enjoy the staff very much but they slam you on drink prices 14.50 for a martini is way too much for me (it isnt manhattan). Everything else was good. They dont rush you which i like.

Food was really quite good, service was attentive, the place is an old church with so much character. The issue is it felt very dated, my wife and I spent half our dinner think of how cool it could be. We are definately going there with regularity...we might just bring paint, art and some lighting. Go for the food it is better than many in the area hands down!

I had driven by here many times and finally decided to go one night on date night with my wife. The restaurant is in an old church and the ambiance is very charming. The sweet potato ravioli is one of the best things I have ever tasted. I was totally blown away. I will definitely be returning here.

The location is where the old Trinity Church used to be located. I’d guess the main dining room entertains about 40 people, and the décor is quite charming! Restaurant was overbooked for Valentine’s Day which resulted in a 30-minute wait and slow service. We sat at the bar with two other couples that showed up at the same time as us and ordered a drink while we were waiting. The bar was very simple and there were HD TVs on the wall. When we were seated, we had to wait quite some time before we received a wine menu. In fact, our glasses of wine did not show up until after our main course was served (and we had an appetizer and salad too!) Waitress apologized continuously for the delay, but it wasn’t her fault as the staff was constantly cleaning off tables to prepare for the next guests. She was pleasant and knowledgeable. Food was awesome! Quite delicious, well-presented, and just the right amount. Overall, I would definitely recommend the restaurant to friends because the food is great, but I would suggest going during off-peak times.
