Culinary Dropout at the Yard - Phoenix
Phoenix Ale Brewery Central Kitchen
Richardson's Cuisine of New Mexico
Known for her elevated cooking approach as much as her colorful bravado and fiery point-of-view, Barrio Urbano is chef Esparza’s latest vision, taking aim at a wider stage of her notable cooking style, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and of course, a serious cocktail program courtesy of seasoned lead bartender and "agave enthusiast" Colton Brock.
Barrio Urbano picks up where Esparza’s Barrio Cafe left off, pushing and blending the boundaries of what authentic Mexican cooking can be, with personality. From housemade everything, to incorporating exotic varieties of imported Mexican chile, Esparza continues to deliver bold flavors.

Very disappointing. Reserved 2 months in advance for Cinco De Mayo for party of 9. Got patio lounge furniture and no table. Ask for table and took 1 hour to get it! Food was marginal and staff was finally accommodating after some discussion !
Absolutely fabulous! Cinco deMayo get together, the enchiladas were inspired and all the edibles-drinks, black bean salsa, chips, guacamole made tableside, did I mention the enchiladas? Burritos 🌯 tacos 🌮- so deliciously wonderful. Go! Now!
Great service,will be back
Urbano is in the midst of a warehouse restaurant/bar scene. Overall much younger crowd in area. Again, food was excellent. If you order chili fries nacho appetizer, it would have easily fed four and there would have been more room for the outstanding enchiladas.
Taco Tuesday, hell ya. The Chorizo and Pibil are a must try, can't beat the deal.
Huevos divorcadios were delicious as was the French toast. Great breakfast and fun place.
Group of 12, took 30 minutes to get water, another 15 for beers. This it's definitely not barrio cafe...
The menu here is creative, and the execution results in delicious food. They also have fun drinks and an extensive tequila list.
Had a good time. Lively environment, casual seating at a patio type set up. Outstanding food.
This restaurant never disappoints. We arrived on a Friday for brunch, and their menu is just the best. I ordered chilaquiles, which were so unusual, with green chile. The entree came with black beans and papas! Wow! I try to bring friends from out of town here, and they always love it. Try the white sangria or a mimosa. The waitress was super kind and attentive, too.
Lively, delicious and attentive. We are always impressed with the care and service we receive at Barrio Urbano and the food is wonderful. So creative and delicious.
We dined at the restaurant because the chef was nominated for the James Beard award. However this restaurant was a tremendous letdown for a variety of reasons.
There was a ping pong table behind us and at one point in the meal a ball came flying to our table. The unreasonable policy of the establishment caused the person who hit the ball to come crawling under our table to retrieve the ball during the middle of our meal. This was highly inappropriate in a variety of ways and downright shocking.
Additionally we were seated along a long bench. At one point t a child was banging constantly along the entire bench causing it to vibrate as if there was an earthquake. The restaurant did nothing to alleviate the situation and detracted from our experience.
We will not be dining at this establishment in the future and we will highly discourage James Beard from tarnishing its name with such a subpar cacophonous yard.
It was chaotic.
Service was slow.
Server was very sweet but every memeber of the team seemed overwhelmed and there were many empty tables inside. I don't get it.
Too many beans in the food. I like beans but when the whole meal tastes like beans....😞
We enjoyed the atmosphere and the staff was great. Too much cheese for my taste (enchiladas) and a few others at our table, but understand the most prefer lots of cheese. I did get to taste the signature pork dish and it was fantastic! Fun place and good, authentic food.
After the superb food at Barrio Gran Reserva, this was a disappointment on every level.
Quesadilla was good and chicken tacos were pretty decent. Chips and salsa are $4. Drinks were okay. Our server was nice. Just seemed kind of expensive for what we got - quesadilla, chicken tacos and two drinks - $50. Happy we tried it though.
First time here, food was very good, service kind of slow and very noisy since restaurant is part of 'The Yard'
Food was excellent and original and the price is spot on. Sadly the service is slow, unattentive and simply unappreciative that you're their dining in the establishment. It felt like we were doing him a favor.
Food was very good. Covered outdoor space is shared with several restaurants / bars. Noise level very high. Comp Valet parking avail.
I have been to Barrio Urbano many times. It is always good, but how good depends on what you order. The Burros and enchiladas have been very good while the Torta's not as good. It's a nice casual place for Mexican food.
We've eaten & Urbano and Cafe in the last 2 weeks. Both were terrible. Chef has lost her touch. There are lots of better Mexican restaurants around!
Really good eclectic venue. Three restaurants surrounding a covered "play" area with ping pong and corn hole in the middles. Fire pits as well
This rest was horrible.
-They did not have glasses for water... we had to wait for awhile till they cleaned them. Not like the rest was even busy.
- they charged 4.00 for a basket of uncooked chips... how do you serve gauc or salsa with out chips? so we had 2 baskets for 8.00??? nuts!
- Service was horrible.
- no silverware on tables and we waited for them to bring them while our food was getting cold.
- Not a place I would recommend to anyone!!! Sad... they have other rest that we have been to that are great this was a horrible experience.
This was my second visit - our last one was not great, but this time Brenda was our server. I started out with low expectations from last visit, especially when there was no host at the podium near the Yard entrance. After waiting for 5 minutes we walked into the restaurant and told the bartenders we had a reservation. The got a hold of the hostess who said she had a reserved table for us. It was on the patio under the air blower and she explained that it was a health code to have on the air and asked if we were ok with it which we were, but it is pretty loud. From there Brenda greeted us and offered timely, pleasant, attentive service. In fact our meal went so smoothly we finished 20 minutes earlier than we had given ourselves time for. The food was delicious and fresh. I would definitely return. Glad I gave it a 2nd chance!
Mine was good. My husband's was way to salty and he sent it back. They took it off the bill. Sat outside but it was so loud from the fan, we had to move inside.
Really enjoyed checking out the restaurant favorite cochinita pibil. It was great but the black beans were way too salty. Faulty shaker for that batch maybe? Was a little noisy for our old ears but we weren't there for a long dinner experience.
Like a giant block party. You don't really go there for the food.
This was my first time here - it's a fun location. It's very noisy at night but the energy of the place was vibrant. We had to wait a while for our waitress to come over (it was a rainy night and the place was packed) but she more than made up for it with her great service. I would diffinately come back again!
The enchiladas suisas were great and their cochinita pibil was to die for. The guacamole was great as well. But their tres leches was lacking.
Awful. Food terrible. Service non-existent. Bill wildly incorrect. Will never go back.
Visited a year ago and it was great. This time entrance door was locked. We found an outside entry and were seated. Then nothing happened. A waitress was in our area but paid no attention. When I called for here she said she had just quit. Some dispute with the manager of the day, who was also the chef. The waitress decided to stay and help us, so that was good. Otherwise we would have left.
Not may diners and not very attentive staff. Food not as good as I had remembered.
Too bad but will not return.
Unique environment, terrific food, crazy good margarita
Nothing amazing. Slow service - not our servers fault as they were understaffed and had had too many tables. The food was marginal, nothing special. Love The Yard, but likely won't be back for Mexican food.
VERY disappointing. There are too many other restaurants in area that are so good. Expensive and not worth it. Please post actual review.
Shannon was our waitress and she was great.
We decided to go to Barrio Urbano with a few friends from out of town looking for a cool place to eat with good food. We have only been here for drinks in the past, and The Yard is great, so we decided to give it a chance. We had 7:00 pm reservations and we were seated right away. We sat and caught up with our friends for over 30 minutes before our server realized we were there (she only noticed because the person that seated us came over to ask if we were helped). We ordered our drinks and they took roughly 15 minutes to arrive at our table. The drinks are quite good (I enjoyed the Old Fashioned). We ordered the Queso dip (awesome) and the Guacamole (really good/different) which took roughly 15 to 20 minutes to arrive at our table. Almost 30 minutes later our dinners came (2 quesadillas and 2 taco entrees)...well, only the 2 quesadillas were delivered to our table. The 2 taco dinners did not arrive for almost 30 minutes AFTER the first 2 meals. When the meals were dropped off the servers ran away without any explanation of why we had to wait so long. We enjoyed our time with our friends, but our overall experience at this restaurant was one of the worst we have experienced...and for a total bill of over $225, I would expect more. I, for one, will never come back to Barrio Urbano...I will definitely be back to The Yard.
We had dinner reservations for a large party (20+). They were either understaffed or simply ill-prepared. It was difficult to even get a glass of water, much less a drink order. Our waitress rarely checked in on us, it took a very long time for her to get around to taking our food orders and even longer for the food to come out. On top of that, 3 of our food orders were either never placed or ??. So 3 of our guests were eating their food after everyone else was done with their meal and ready to move on. I don't blame the waitress completely, I'm sure it was all due to a combination of things, including the size of our party. But if you know you have a large party coming, it'd be best to be better prepared. I enjoy the Barrio restaurants, so it doesn't mean I won't be back, but we unfortunately had a very bad experience this time around. And I'll never recommend Urbano for a large party.
We love the food at Barrio Urbana. The location is a lot of fun, and the food is to die for! We started with the guacamole, made at the table. Excellent as were the burritos. I'm ready to go back again.
We went on a Saturday, and it was an off night for our server. She dropped some dishes, causing glass shards to fly onto one of the guests in my party. The server apologized and swapped out my friend's chair which had some glass pieces on it. Then when our appetizer arrived, it was cold. The Manager intervened and not only got us a hot appetizer but some chips, salsa and beans on the house. Unfortunately, the service didn't get better - our server forgot to bring us beers and told me that the tacos came with fries when they only come with fries on Tuesdays. To be fair she did offer to buy me some fries to fix her error. The food was delicious, our entrees were hot when they arrived. Everyone was nice, but our server was either new, having a bad night or both. Hubby says he would still return.
