Barrio - Lowertown Ratings and Reviews
Even during happy hour on a Thursday, service was excellent. The food was very good. I would especially recommend Barrio during the warm months--they've got a beautiful open layout and outdoor seating. Food arrived pretty quickly, drinks quicker. You can't really beat their happy hour menu, either.
I've been so impressed in the past, but was a little disappointed this time around. Service was definitely lacking. Food was ok, but nothing to write home about. Our table of three took second/third/last priority to a couple larger parties. Part of order was forgotten by server who only entered it after we reminded her. Drinks/waters were left unfilled several times.
I do appreciate that our server removed last forgotten item from the menu, but I do hope that we see an improvement the next time. It was Saturday night... There were plenty of empty tables, so it wasn't super busy... We just expect better when paying for top shelf drinks, apps and full meals.
The food was great! The pork belly taco and crab empanadas were awesome. We got there during happy hour so prices were great. We were lucky enough to sit outside on a beautiful, not busy day. However, the whole experience was sullied by our rude, absentee waitress. Unfortunate, since the tables near us had a very cheerful, helpful, attentive waitress.
Tried this place on a whim as I was looking for a place in downtown Saint Paul near to a show we were to attend later. Overall I had a great time. The food, drinks and service were spectacular. The place was quite nice. We sat inside, however outdoor seating ( which appeared full at the time ) is across from Mears park, which is a delightful little park. Overall I give it a very positive rating.
Worst experience and service I have had in a while. Never ate the food cause nobody greeted our table. I would suggest going to the Bulldog next door. They actually give a rip about customers. The Bulldog's food is excellent. I highly suggest going there instead of Barrio.
Tapas (small plate) food is always awesome. I would say food is NOT authentic Mexican, but Creative Mexican, very tasty. Some items are spice, but Everything is flavorful, I have had probably half the items on the menu, over maybe 6 visits. One of my favorite places!
MUST try the pork sopes!
The waitress was excellent and apologized for errors with the cocktails. The hostess that seated us wasn't friendly and told us we couldn't have a table with low chairs because we didn't have a reservation. I told her we did have a reservation which the group of 4 that cut in front of us at the door did not--and got what she told me was the last table with low chairs even though the restaurant was ~30% empty. Then we had to wait for her to text the late reservation befor letting us have the table next to the bathrooms. I'm sure you are pressured to keep the same menu, but an occasional special in the evening would be appreciated. Thank you for listening.
We have loved going to Barrio in the past. This visit was very disappointing. First, we had a reservation, but when we arrived the host first asked us how long we intended to stay because she had another reservation. This seemed very rude - I've never been asked that at a restaurant before. Second, we ordered an appetizer which never arrived. When we mentioned it, our server said 'oh, did you still want that?' No apology, no trying to make it right. Overall, we were not impressed.
First I'll say the service was great. The waitress who served us was kind, prompt, and was attentive. Unfortunately I was unimpressed with the food. We ordered quesadillas that were soggy, covered in so much "extras" that you didn't even realize there was a quesadilla underneath. The Pozole was a dish I was looking forward to as well, but lacked in flavor.
Most folks don't even know what good service is anymore, so they don't know what they're either praising or panning when they review it. But it is worth reporting that our service at Barrio was remarkably good. All 3 staff who helped us worked deliberately, spoke rather than just acting, asked questions, answered ours, and were present and helpful. THIS is service, rather than simply food delivery that is or is not prompt. There are so few places outside of very expensive high end establishments whose servers really get this concept; and may of those are inferior to the dedicated folks at Barrio. Yes, the food and drinks are all great, too. But there are lots of places that can toss out an edible dish. The issue is how it gets tossed at you when you order it. And Barrio makes dining out ACTUALLY dining out. We'll be back again and again.
Salsas appear to be improved. Chips were good. Margaritas were great, but a little small/underfilled. The rest of the food was adequate - not up to the standards previously. Lacking in flavor were the tamal, mahi mahi taco (really?! a taco not good?), hearts of palm salad, "seasoned" beef tenderlion skewers. Produce was fresh & the highlights. Churros & chocolate were awful - overdone, lacking in taste otherwise, barely sugar coated & "chocolate" appeared to be less tasteful than watered down Hershey syrup, but similar texture plus had parts of skin served at the side of the dish when it wasn't even warm. I've gotten significantly better churros for less at the fast food Taco Johns.
My high chair was super wobbly, so I switched it out...only to see it put back into service without checking or repair.
The place is loud already, though I found it interesting that someone would change the volume of the background music at the beginnings of songs. The women's restroom was underserved with toilet lid broken & partially missing, out of toilet paper & paper towels in stalls yet it was only 6 at nite on a Tuesday.
I was embarrassed that I had suggested the place for dinner & raved previously about the great food. Major letdown!
We visited Barrio for my mother in laws birthday. I arrived an hour before our reserved time in which the host was very accommodating. The staff was very attentive and our waiter was out of this world. Very helpful and friendly.
I have been to Barrio on a few occasions prior to this and have yet to have a bad experience. The food absolutely do die for.
I used to love Barrio and look forward to a chance to have dinner and drinks there, but I feel that the quality has declined quite a bit and the service has been so spotty over the past few visits. The corn chowder used to be my favorite, but on my last visit there was hardly any corn in it. The tacos seem to be getting smaller. The prices go up. The servers make it seem that customers are a bother. I will say the food arrived super quick and the cocktails are good. I just might need to make trips to Barrio a place to grab a drink before a game at CHS Field, rather than a place to have dinner with friends.
