Barrett's Grill Ratings and Reviews
It is time to update the menu. The lobster roll is a keeper, but the crab corn chowder needs a reboot, maybe do lobster bisque or New England Clam Chowder over the winter. Also, when we were there for lunch, people around us were not wanting the jalopeno wrap. A nice club sandwich option would be welcome.
The Barrett Grill deserves high praise for what it offers its clients. With so many restaurants quickly becoming a "jip" and mostly hype, this place retains a quiet and sterling quality of service, food and atmosphere without fanfare and the "smoke and mirrors" gimmicks of so many others. I trust they will retain the old-fashioned qualities that make it a splendid place for any meal with excellent service. I live an hour away and consider going there just for the food and service more than worth the effort of the drive. DO NOT CHANGE!
The food was delicious as ever. However, the service was not up to par. The manager explained it as a miscommunication, I explain as poor service. Two of our party of four ordered side dishes to accompany our dinner entrees. The waitress thought we wanted them instead of the vegetable that came with the dinner. My Caesar salad was served on my dinner plate along with the entree( ugh) instead of a separate course. When we spoke to the manager about the error, his answer indicated the communication might have been our error as well, and did we want to take home a serving of the “haricot verts”. Are you kidding me? He finally gave us a 10% reduction on our bill.
It’s a good thing we love the food at Barrett’s so much, or we might not be back.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the manager/owner at the front desk and I shared with him that this was our visit there and we were celebrating my husband's birthday which happens to fall on Christmas Eve. He made it a point to make it a pleasurable experience which I truly appreciate and look forward to returning in the near future.
Date night semi-disaster. Seamlessly, we were greeted and seated immediately for a 7pm Saturday reservation. Even with only a few empty tables in the restaurant, our server came to the table right away, took our drink orders, and the drinks were delivered without delay. We pretty much knew what we wanted to eat before arriving so when we ordered our appetizer, we were able to tell our server what our entree order was as well. Apparently, the course line was forgotten because as soon as the first delicious bite of buffalo calamari was being enjoyed, the entrees arrived. They arrived with so much fury that my ice water was knocked onto our food and my lap. But wait, there's more..... after wiping up the water, they forgot to fill my water back up and left the dishrag on the table for the duration of the meal. YUM! About halfway through trying to figure out a good pace on prime rib and buffalo calamari, our server arrived to ask if she could box up my food. We looked at the time and had only been there 25 minutes. Table turn much? My old fashioned, the complimentary creme brulee, and the company I was keeping were really what kept this from being a full-on disaster. Oh, and the overly abundant amount of checkbacks from the server were borderline annoying boutique sales clerk but not once did the manager check in on this Open Table reservation. No desire for a return visit from me.
It was an overall nice time. Service was great, drinks were great. I was really disappointed in the mac and cheese. I expected more from how the restaurant presented itself. Plain penne with assorted cheeses clumped on top and then broiled. Boring. May I suggest that you at least make a roux? The meatloaf was great., the braised short ribs were great.
We love Barrett"s but yesterday things seemed to be a little off. Our waiter greeted us, provided drinks and took our order - then disappeared! No explaination was offered.
My husband's poached eggs were hard in the center, we advised the waiter, no response.
We were there to celebrate a birthday, as I noted on the reservation; no mention was
made of the event. It was not busy, a medium size crowd, although there was a gathering in the
back room. Just not up to the excellent food and service we have always enjoyed.
The menu is varied for both dining or a quick meal before or after a movie. They have a wide selection of beer and wine as well as good mix of prices for dinner meals. I'm partial to the salmon dish and the prime rib, when available is a cut above. The only downside is for a restaurant with a good wine list, the reds are always way, way too warm. For a restaurant known for its varied wine selection, one might think the temperature of a red would be cooler that ambient temperature. For this reason, I rarely order an expensive wine.
I have been to Barrett’s a number of times since it opened. The first few times were very satisfying with nice warm decor & a good menu. The thing is none has been refreshed since. I’v found it hard to really enjoy a meal there the last few times. The bar & dining area are tired and the menu is really tired. It hasn’t changed in all those years. If the food was outstanding I wouldn’t mind but the food just seems tired also. I have had the corn & crab soup a number of times & it is presented differently each time. Where is the consistency of a perfected recipe that has been on the menu for years? This time it wasn’t anything to get excited about...a few crab pieces with hard tiny corn kernels and a very thin soup. It seems to lose taste & any reason to be a recommended soup every time. I had the scallops entree & although the taste was good it’s just boring. Surprised no vegetable comes with it. I will say the service is friendly & the food was served in a timely manner & hot. Hopefully the owners will see a reason to update this restaurant sometime soon. It has gotten very boring.
My fiancé and I went there to have a nice date together. We had reservations and arrived late but there was no issue. We were seated immediately. The service was fantastic from start to finish. The food was incredible. Wait time was perfect. We will be dining there more frequently. Highly recommened this place to anyone!
The server may have been new but we did not feel up to par. He was pleasant for sure, however.
He Tried to remember our order but had to come back to table to verify.
Waited for more rolls and had to ask twice which came when we were almost done.
As it got busier he was hard to find to get check, ect.
Never got my doggie bag and forgot until I was home.
I had been here a few years ago with a group of women for an early dinner, and we really enjoyed everything. My recent visit, however, with a different group of friends was very disappointing.
Our young male server was good- looking and polite enough, but not attentive to drink refills, offering bread, or bringing other needs/ offering dessert. Perhaps he was new at his job?
While the scallop appetizer was delicious, the price for JUST 3 was high. Almost $5 a piece is a bit pricy! The house specialty crab and corn soup, was mostly cream. A few small chunks of crab could be seen and very little corn.
Our entrees were very good and fairly priced, but the protein portion of the short ribs was very skimpy. The sautéed vegetable side was tasty and sufficient, as was the salmon.
Dessert was very pricy, except for the sorbet, so 2 out of 3 of us passed. I enjoyed the lemon sorbet he brought, even though he said it was raspberry when I ordered it, and told me about the change later. No coffee was offered, and we had to beg for refills on our teas and water throughout our 3 hr. stay.
We decided it was not worth the drive and we wouldn't come back.
Barrett’s Grill at 7:00 PM was insanely busy. Once seated, the service was fine and the food was excellent. But I wouldn’t go back. We had made reservations on Open Table. When we arrived, the hostess apologized and said they were unusually “backed up,” and put us in the bar with the queue of people waiting for tables. It was nearly an hour before we were seated. So, we conclude that claiming to permit people to make reservations is just a dishonest strategy to lure more into showing up.
Four of us went on Thanksgiving and had a fabulous meal. Even though it wasn't strictly traditional (though they did have turkey on offer) everything was excellent. Even our hard-to-please vegetarian was stuffed with a variety of fresh side dishes. Definitely recommend!
