Best restaurant in Old San Juan
Excellent Food and the Best Piña Colada great service
The famous piña collada did not taste as delicious as it has on my other visits. Was kind of watery. The both tables we sat at wobbled. We asked to be moved to another table and that table also was wobbly. The food took a long time to come and when it finally arrived it was cold. No bueno! The floors are cracked not easy to walk around especially to the bathroom. Barrachina needs some renovations! Ahhh .. and don’t forget to make a reservation or you can’t get a table
Barrachina is a place to go for excellent food as long as you aren’t in a hurry and don’t care about attentive service. When we sat down, we asked for bottled water and were surprised when the waitress literally plunked down two plastic bottles of water...no cups, no offer of ice, just the two bottles. After ordering, we waited nearly 50 minutes for our dinners. Not once during that time did the waitress return to ask if she could bring us more drinks (we had also ordered cocktails, which we finished well before dinner arrived) or to update us on our order. Dinner was outstanding, however, and nearly made up for the inattentive service.
It was pretty clear that the dinner crowd was mostly tourists, most likely coming in off of the cruise ships, so my guess is that the staff isn’t too concerned about repeat customers.
We had a reservation at 7:45 and didn’t get food until 9:45. We were called late before our table was actually ready and sat in the corner by the waiter table. The table next to us was complaining about waiting for their food for over an hour. Tables were very close together and people kept bumping my chair to get in/out and clean
We visit this restaurant every time we go to Puerto Rico. The food is amazing! The service was good as well, though I little slower than we remember. Will definitely be back.
Waited hour for food at an empty table covered in white paper - no bread or chips+salsa. Wine was served by former bus boy who had never opened a bottle before - and the cork got stuck. Food was good (grouper in creole sauce + rice no preferred options on menu were available. No reason for anyone to go there.
This was our 2nd visit to Barrachina. The restaurant is in a great location, the ambiance, food and service are wonderful. The pina coladas are the best I've had. The mofungo and skirt steak are excellent choices my son also enjoyed the fajitas.
Took the opportunity to enjoy local fare and the infamous Pina Colada
Food was amazing, indoor and outdoor seating available.
Birthday . Reservation was well done. The food is good. Fish was a little over cook. No wine list to select.
Food was great. Service was horrible. We have come to understand that things take longer and while in vacation expect it. We aren’t in a hurry and prefer to have a relaxing experience, but we do like served at some point.
It was awesome and the pina coladas were as good as advertised!
Really bad service. It took time to get seated (despite our reservation), to get our menus, to get water and to place an order. Our drinks were brought to some in our group of 8, not to others. We sat for a long time and then the appetizers came at the same time as the main course! Some of the dishes had apparently been sitting out and had gotten cold. The food was mediocre. We skipped dessert and asked for our check, for which, again, we had a long wait. The restaurant allows separate checks but the orders were all mixed up (so what's the use?). It then took another while to process the 3 separate credit cards. We were there about 4 hours after a long travel day. I'm the only Puerto Rican in the group and had been there several times before, mainly for lunch. This time it was an embarrassment to me. I'll never return. Please don't waste your time and money in this restaurant. It's probably surviving on its location, its pretty patio, its past glories and its claim of having invented the pina colada. Awful.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this meal. We were seated promptly and our server was excellent. We had the starter platter with fritters, empanadas, calamari etc and then had mofongo with shrimp and mofongo with steak. Everything was very tasty. I had a pina colada which of course was delicious. Another member of our group had the tres leches cake and said it was amazing. This is not just a tourist trap. There is a reason it is still packed every night after 40 years.
Excellent ambiance, outstanding service and amazing authentic Puerto Rican cuisine and drinks. Highly recommended!
Family pre cruise dinner. Great restaurant for a large party. Lots of choices on the menu to suit everyone. Yummy pina coladas. Mofungo was tasty. Steak quite good. Fried snapper good but if you order it, have them not overcook it. Ours was a little dry.
Wonderful waiter Victor.
While the Pina colada was delicious, that was the only thing going for this tourist trap. The service was horrendous. We waited over an hour for food, and the fish was dry and pretty sad. Definitely not worth the hype! Go somewhere else.
Food was overcooked. We got the mahi mahi, snapper, and salmon and all were overcooked.
Food quality just ok. Average place at best.
This place is fantastic! Pina Coladas are wonderful. Black bean soup, paella, and the canoe were great! Service was great. Will definitely return if ever in San Juan!!
We were on a cruise that docked for dinner. We had a 7:30 reservation and arrived early. They were so crowded and did not manage their reservations well. We did not get seated till 8:00 even though they had plenty of tables and were not taking walk ins, reservations only. The food was mediocre and would not recommend.
Mediocre at best. Food not good. Overpriced.
Good food! Indoor area with AC was a little cold, but would still highly recommend this restaurant!
Fun experience. Great Pina colada's. Try the mofongo.
Great place to go off of a cruise ship.
Make reservations! The place was packed and the standby line was closed while we were waiting. Mofongo was great. Pina coladas were very tasty. The service was good, staff was fast and friendly.
Other than the Pina Coladas, nothing was good. Had a reservation, but waited for 45 minutes to get seated. If we didn't wait at the desk they would have given our table to another party. Waiting room was packed, as a cruise ship came in a few hours before. There were numerous tables that were empty, but they didn't seat people. It appeared they didn't have enough staff. Took at least 30 minutes to get our food after we ordered. Food was way over done. I had the whole snapper, mostly dry and tasteless. My wife and daughter had the mahi, also overdone. The best part of the meal was the rice and beans.
While an established restaurant in San Juan it is very much a tourist destination. The traditional foods were excellent but entres like grilled meats and fish average. Be prepared to wait forever to get your meals or even a glass of water.
one of our guests had the pork chop and it was 1/3fat and the rest was so overcooked it was tough and dry
The food was subpar. So salty it was mostly inedible. I appreciated the owner? manager? visiting our table and inviting us back for a complimentary meal but I don’t want to waste another meal of my vacation at this place. Shame on me for not doing more research. It’s just a tourist trap.
4 of us thoroughly enjoyed dinner, food and service were both very good, and Enos was friendly and efficient!
It was just “ok” the food was very good, drinks were awful. Not a terrible place it’s good for a quick lunch or dinner if your starving not for celebrating or a romantic place . You can dressed VERY casual. Waitress seemed depressed to work there. Will I return? Nope.
Fun evening with my girls ~ food was very good and the drinks were awesome! Service was exceptional! Neighborhood gem!
Poor service , food not amazed, attention was horrible.horrible food Had to wait one hour and still forgot us not worth wait ore money super noisy sheets of paper uncomfortable and hurt a lot messy tables definitely 1 Star rating
The waiting time for getting the food was 45+ minutes; I requested olive oil and that took 30 minutes and I needed to complain to get it.
Even though I had a reservation it took 15 minutes to accommodate us.
Food was ok.
Great place for casual outing or a special occasion! We got the shrimp mofongo and the tres leche cake and both were delicious!
The food was delicious! My husband had sautéed shrimp. They were tender and flavorful. My friend had mofongo with churrasco and the meat was perfectly cooked and tender. I had the mofongo with shrimp and lobster. The seafood was tender and melted in your mouth. The criolla sauce was outstanding and the mofongo was moist and flavorful. My husband like it so much that we went for dinner the last night in Old San Juan. Dinner portions are too big (bigger than lunch) but still delicious. Give it a try, you would not be disappointed.
Probably the best Shrimp Mofongo I’ve ever had. Best pina colada in town as well. My belly and my mouth were extremely happy. Can’t wait to return!
Had a special event for the night but they didn't take note at all. Did not feel like valued. Food and place are just OK.
